Shere and Feist Excel Across Compact Formats at Imagination Station B 2023English
Five rounds across three compact disciplines tested every layer of consistency on January 8, 2023, as 48 competitors gathered in Toledo, Ohio, USA. Held at Imagination Station, the schedule of Imagination Station B 2023 was built on tight turnarounds and varied format demands. With two multi-stage brackets paired alongside a single-round sprint, competitors had to calibrate their approaches immediately to survive the cut structure and seize podium spots.
The 3x3x3 Cube, the quintessential Rubik's Cube event, featured two full rounds for its 48 contenders. Navigating the opening stage required steady turning, but the second round elevated the standard significantly. Ezra Shere captured the top step of the podium with a winning average of 8.95 seconds, propelled by the round's best single solve of 7.72 seconds. The 3x3 results confirmed Shere as the sole finalist to break into sub-nine territory.
Steven Wintringham secured the silver medal in 3x3x3 with an average of 12.11 seconds, holding off a close challenge from Natapong Kanema, who took bronze in 12.21 seconds. The two-round setup left no room for hesitation, making every solve in the final five-attempt sequence crucial for the medal distribution at this WCA competition.
In stark contrast to the multi-round formats, the 2x2x2 Cube unfolded entirely in a solitary round. With 44 competitors given only five solves to make their mark, the absence of a preliminary qualifying buffer heightened the stakes. Sujan Feist claimed victory with a sharp 3.55 average, highlighted by the event's best single of 2.73 seconds. Shere followed closely in second place with a 3.66 average, while Wintringham took third with a 4.44 mark.
The Pyraminx event returned to the two-round format, drawing 40 competitors into its qualification bracket before narrowing down the final. Ezra Shere once again set the benchmark, winning the event with a 1.91 average and posting a blistering 1.38 single. Wintringham collected his third podium of the day by taking second with a 2.87 average, while Maxwell Cobb finished third with an average of 6.34 seconds.
Beyond the podium battles, Imagination Station B 2023 brought massive leaps forward for competitors across the field. Adam Smith delivered a breakthrough performance by lowering his 2x2x2 personal best to 7.57 seconds, an improvement of 75.4 percent, while also slicing his 3x3x3 mark by 74.7 percent down to 20.64 seconds and logging a first official Pyraminx solve of 12.93. Luke Buettner took on 2x2x2 for the first time with a 4.30 effort to secure 12th place, cut his Pyraminx best by 70.8 percent to 6.40 seconds, and improved his 3x3x3 standard to 19.03 seconds.
Other notable milestones showed the deep value of the competition structure. Owen Fraker reduced his 2x2x2 best by 53.2 percent to 10.46 seconds and lowered his 3x3x3 personal record by 32.4 percent to 25.76 seconds. Nicholas Sak advanced his 2x2x2 record by 51.8 percent to 4.02 seconds, taking 8th place, and set personal bests of 20.71 in 3x3x3 and 7.95 in Pyraminx. Jacob Todd Wilson improved his 3x3x3 mark by 48.3 percent to 21.35 seconds and registered an 11.84 in his first Pyraminx appearance. Lukin Uhte took on both Pyraminx and 2x2x2 for the first time, notching 20.49 and 9.24 respectively, while improving in 3x3x3 by 47.4 percent to 27.33 seconds. Gabriel Litman trimmed his Pyraminx record by 36.1 percent to 8.63 seconds and his 2x2x2 mark to 6.22 seconds across three events entered. Steve Albert tackled his first official attempts in Pyraminx and 2x2x2, posting 9.56 and 8.43 seconds.
The one-day cubing competition concluded with United States competitors sweeping all nine available podium positions across the three events. Whether navigating the immediate finality of a single-stage event or pacing their efforts across multiple rounds, the competitors at Imagination Station B 2023 demonstrated the focus needed to excel in modern speed cubing.
As the 2023 speedcubing calendar moves forward, the high standards achieved in Toledo set a strong foundation for the athletes heading into future regional tournaments.
