Biswas Edges Final Solves as Bhuwalka Dominates IISER-K Spring Open 2023English

A margin of just three hundredths of a second decided the premier event at IISER-K Spring Open 2023. Held on February 4, 2023, the single-day WCA competition transformed Room 107 in the Lecture Hall Complex at IISER Kolkata into an intense arena for 39 competitors. With eight events and 13 rounds on the schedule, the tournament in Mohanpur, West Bengal, India delivered tense showdowns across every table, but none matched the drama that unfolded across the closing sequence of the 2x2x2 Cube final.

In that 2x2x2 Cube title clash, Sayak Moulic and Aarya Biswas went head to head in a nerve-testing contest decided by the barest of margins. Moulic secured the victory with a winning average of 3.75 seconds alongside a best single of 2.50. Biswas applied continuous pressure throughout the round, ultimately settling for second place with an average of 3.78, while Dhruv Rana captured third on 4.62 seconds. The thrilling sequence set a high competitive standard for the rest of the gathering.

Biswas found absolute redemption when the main 3x3x3 Cube final arrived. Facing a field of 38 competitors across two full rounds, Biswas logged the tournament best single of 8.90 seconds and delivered a winning average of 10.05 to seize the title. Yash Jakhmola earned runner-up honours with an average of 11.99, while Hitesh Kumar Bhuwalka rounded out the podium in 12.62 seconds. The official 3x3 results highlighted an exceptionally competitive top tier of speedcubing talent in the region.

While Biswas claimed top billing on the classic Rubik's Cube, Hitesh Kumar Bhuwalka mounted the most prolific campaign of the weekend by capturing four separate titles. Bhuwalka dominated the big cubes, winning the 4x4x4 Cube with a 36.08 average and a 35.02 single, finishing ahead of Biswas at 49.08 and Jakhmola at 49.65. In the 5x5x5 Cube, Bhuwalka took top honours with an average of 1:07.99, ahead of Pritam Kumar at 1:31.82 and Sukesh Kumar at 1:53.42.

Bhuwalka extended his mastery across the alternative puzzles as well. In 3x3x3 One-Handed, he captured first place with an average of 20.77 seconds and a best single of 18.63, outlasting Moulic on 25.03 and Jakhmola on 26.82. He added a fourth gold medal in Skewb, recording an average of 6.94 seconds to finish ahead of Moulic on 9.51 and Jagannath Saha on 9.95. Moulic countered in the 3x3x3 Blindfolded, claiming victory with a best single of 1:14.88 where memory and precision proved essential.

Behind the top tier of podium finishers, several competitors delivered massive improvements across multiple formats. Deep Gopinath Kasar improved his 3x3x3 Cube personal best to 39.06 seconds, slicing 56.6 percent off his previous mark of 1:29.90, while also recording a first ever attempt at 2x2x2 Cube in 20.74. Chanda led the 21-competitor field over two rounds, staying clear of Dhruv Rana at 6.91 and Sayak Moulic at 7.02. The energetic speed cubing throughout the day demonstrated the deep local enthusiasm present across all eight disciplines.

Across 13 rounds of action, this cubing competition illustrated how fractions of a second shape tournament history. Whether decided on the final turn of a miniature cube or built on endurance through five-layer puzzles, IISER-K Spring Open 2023 offered a complete demonstration of timing, technique, and calm under pressure in Mohanpur.
