Huzhou Open 2024

One hundred and eighty-six competitors gathered at Zhejiang Open University for Huzhou Open 2024 on March 30, 2024, setting the stage for a day where steady execution proved decisive. Across eight rounds in five core events, the tournament in Huzhou, Zhejiang, China rewarded those who could string together reliable solves rather than rely on isolated flukes. Speedcubing at this level leaves virtually no room for volatile times, and throughout the day the eventual winners established control by delivering disciplined averages across every turn.

The premier 3x3x3 Cube event drew a massive field of 179 competitors across three full rounds of action. While Ruihang Xu recorded a stunning 4.09 single, it was his 5.74 winning average in the final that secured the top spot on the podium. The race for the remaining steps remained tight, as Lukas Shelley from Denmark secured second place with an average of 6.65, edging Zhiyi Yang who posted a 6.67 average for third. The final 3x3 results underlined that winning a major cubing competition requires unwavering repeatability from start to finish.

Ruihang Xu carried that exact template into the 4x4x4 Cube, topping a field of 128 competitors across two rounds. Xu posted a single of 19.90 on his way to an unmatched 22.82 winning average, pulling well clear of the chasing pack. Jiahao Zhu captured second place with a 28.42 average, while Ziyu Wu completed the podium in third with a 29.14 mark. The event demonstrated the value of smooth transitions and dependable pairing on the four-layered puzzle.

The larger puzzles belonged entirely to Ziyu Wu, who put on a clinic of pacing and control across the 5x5x5 Cube, 6x6x6 Cube, and 7x7x7 Cube events. In the 5x5x5 Cube, Wu led 106 entrants with a 44.16 winning average and a 40.69 single, holding off Ruihang Xu, who placed second with 48.05, and Zhiyuan Ma in third at 49.59. Wu then doubled down in the 6x6x6 Cube, leading 77 solvers with an average of 1:21.14, outperforming Jiayang Zhang in second at 1:37.79 and Xuming Wang in third at 1:39.45.

Wu capped off a dominant triple sweep by capturing the 7x7x7 Cube title against 71 competitors. His winning average of 1:54.58 was anchored by a best single of 1:48.92, distancing him from runner-up Haoxuan Zhu at 2:18.93 and third-place finisher Tianzuo Du at 2:27.97. Across all three big-cube finals, Wu avoided costly lockups, proving that sustained composure over hundreds of moves is the defining trait of big-cube excellence in modern speed cubing.

Beyond the podium battles, several competitors achieved remarkable milestones across the schedule at Huzhou Open 2024. Xingyu Lu took on five events, earning a 22nd place finish in 6x6x6 Cube with a first official attempt of 2:03.99, completing a first 7x7x7 Cube attempt of 3:19.53, and shaving 41.5 percent off a 4x4x4 Cube personal best to hit 30.50. Hanyang Jiang entered three events, logging a 3x3x3 Cube personal best of 15.61 that was 38.5 percent faster than before, while posting first career attempts of 45.89 on 4x4x4 Cube and 1:34.98 on 5x5x5 Cube. Jingcai Li tackled four events, cutting 40.1 percent from a 5x5x5 Cube personal best with a 1:23.53 solve, alongside maiden attempts of 2:45.88 on 6x6x6 Cube and 5:20.78 on 7x7x7 Cube.

The breadth of ambition was equally visible among other multi-event participants at this WCA competition. Guopeng Huang stepped up to five events, posting a 44th place finish in 7x7x7 Cube with a first attempt of 3:50.94, alongside initial marks of 38.48 on 4x4x4 Cube and 1:15.32 on 5x5x5 Cube. Wanling Xu also embraced five events, recording a 47th place finish in 5x5x5 Cube with a 1:15.01 initial attempt, while adding first efforts of 2:33.72 on 6x6x6 Cube and 4:03.32 on 7x7x7 Cube. Ziyu Wu (吴子煜) contested five events, notching 40th place in 7x7x7 Cube with an initial 3:49.26, complemented by first attempts of 1:14.49 on 5x5x5 Cube and 2:31.99 on 6x6x6 Cube.

Podium honors at the 2024 gathering were heavily claimed by domestic contenders, with Chinese solvers capturing fourteen of the fifteen available podium positions alongside Denmark taking one. From the classic Rubik's Cube to the taxing demands of the seven-layered monster, the tournament rewarded calculated rhythm above all else. As the curtain fell on Huzhou Open 2024, the day stood as a clear showcase of how structured consistency remains the definitive formula for tournament success.
