Tsvetkov and Novotni Sweep the Boards at Autumn Hungarian Open 2024English
One hundred and sixty competitors gathered in Budapest, Hungary from November 1 to November 3, marking a major milestone in the late-season speedcubing calendar. Staged at the Bornemisza Péter Gimnázium across three full days of action, the Hungarian Open 2024 offered an extensive program featuring 17 events and 35 competitive rounds. The autumn fixture brought together seasoned veterans and fresh talent for one of the most comprehensive showcases of the 2024 cubing competition circuit.
The premier 3x3x3 Rubik's Cube category delivered elite performances across three rigorous stages. Alexey Tsvetkov took top honors in the final, securing victory with a winning average of 6.55 seconds alongside a tournament-best single solve of 5.61 seconds. The final 3x3 results saw Gergő Zalán Molnár secure second place on home soil with an average of 7.59 seconds, while Gábor Slezák joined him on the podium in third place with a 7.69 average.
Alexey Tsvetkov mounted an exceptional multi-event campaign throughout the weekend, collecting five separate titles. In the 2x2x2 Cube, Tsvetkov took the gold with an average of 1.31 seconds, holding off Hungarian challengers András Orbán who posted 1.52 and Ábel Egyházy who finished in 1.87 seconds. Tsvetkov also topped the Pyraminx standings with a 2.22 average ahead of Bence Pető and Slovakia's Jakub Drobný, while securing additional tournament victories in 3x3x3 One-Handed with 10.57 seconds and Skewb with a 3.19 average.
Hungarian standout Gergely Novotni established complete control across the mid-range and big cube events. Novotni captured gold in the 4x4x4 Cube with a winning average of 28.20 seconds, edging out compatriot Bálint Csengő at 28.69 and Germany's Oliver Fritz at 30.79. Novotni went on to claim the 5x5x5 Cube title in 50.54 seconds, ahead of Slovenia's Oskar Vidiček and Csengő, and clinched the 6x6x6 Cube in 1:45.22, again finishing ahead of Csengő and Fritz. His four-title haul concluded with a decisive victory in Megaminx, recording an average of 37.40 seconds.
Behind the fight for podium positions, individual breakthroughs defined the tournament floor as competitors expanded their repertoires. István Szoukup took on six different events, securing a 25th-place finish in 3x3x3 Fewest Moves while logging his first official solves in Skewb at 28.26 and Pyraminx at 15.62, alongside a massive personal best in the 2x2x2 Cube of 5.02 seconds that was 45.1 percent faster than his prior mark. Ádám Pető entered five events, recording his first official attempts in Clock at 12.90 seconds and 5x5x5 Cube at 2:21.77, while carving his 3x3x3 personal best down to 15.25 seconds, an improvement of 15.3 percent. Előd Dudás stepped up to seven events, marking his first tournament attempts in Skewb with a 7.47, Pyraminx with an 11.73, and 3x3x3 One-Handed with a time of 45.97 seconds.
That same drive to expand into new disciplines appeared across the roster of competitors at this WCA competition. Dávid Hege tackled five categories, registering first-time official marks of 7.63 in Pyraminx, 12.71 in Skewb, and 40.97 in 3x3x3 One-Handed. The blindfolded categories demanded extreme memory skills and produced compelling battles between specialists. In the 3x3x3 Blindfolded event, Bálint Csengő took the title with a rapid single of 25.28 seconds, outpacing Oliver Fritz at 29.70 and Mihály Horváth at 30.06. Specialist solving rounded out the rest of the 17-event lineup during this late-season speed cubing meeting. Szabolcs Szántai secured two titles, winning Square-1 with a 10.34 average and the 3x3x3 Fewest Moves challenge with a 24.00 move average. From Tsvetkov's five titles to Novotni's big-cube mastery and dozens of individual personal milestones, the weekend in Budapest underscored the competitive depth present across the sport as athletes prepare for the coming year.
A klasszikus 3x3x3 Rubik-kocka kirakás döntőjében a 150 induló közül Alexey Tsvetkov bizonyult a leggyorsabbnak, 6.55 másodperces átlaggal szerezve meg a győzelmet, miközben a legjobb egyéni ideje 5.61 másodperc lett. Mögötte Gergő Zalán Molnár zárt a második helyen 7.59 másodperces átlaggal, míg a harmadik pozíciót Gábor Slezák szerezte meg 7.69 másodperccel. A királykategória küzdelmei mellett a mellékversenyszámok sora biztosította a folyamatos pezsgést a versenyteremben.
Alexey Tsvetkov több kategóriában is megállíthatatlannak bizonyult a hétvégén.
József Osztényi hét kategóriában állt rajthoz, élete első hivatalos kísérletét teljesítette Megaminxben 1:48.15-ös idővel, míg a 3x3x3 One-Handed számban 29.00-ra javította rekordját a korábbi 44.14-ről.
A legnagyobb kirakó, a 7x7x7 Cube megmérettetését Bence Barát nyerte 2:34.36-os átlaggal. A dobogós helyezések összesítésében a magyar versenyzők 31 érmet szereztek a 2024-es év ezen jeles viadalán.
A Hungarian Open 2024 nemcsak a rekordokról és a helyezésekről szólt, hanem a speedcubing közösség összetartozásáról és a kirakók iránti elkötelezettségről. Ez a WCA competition kiváló hangulatban, példás sportszerűséggel és rengeteg emlékezetes pillanattal zárult, méltó emléket állítva a hazai és nemzetközi versenyzők közös szenvedélyének Budapesten.
