Mean-of-Three Precision and Multi-Event Mastery Anchor Howrah Cube Open 2024English
Inside Shree Shyam Mandir Ghusuridham Sabhagar, the sharp rhythm of plastic layers turning at speed set the tempo for two days of intense competition. The hall hosted 62 solvers across 13 events, each taking their place under the match lights in Howrah, West Bengal, India. From May 11 to May 12, the venue buzzed with anticipation as competitors navigated 23 total rounds. Tables lined with timers and mats witnessed the sharp concentration of speedcubing specialists tackling everything from miniature twists to complex, multi-layered challenges across the weekend schedule.
Nowhere was the pressure sharper than in the mean-of-three events, where every single turn carries decisive weight. Unlike five-solve formats that offer the safety net of discarding the best and worst attempts, formats like the 6x6x6 Cube and 7x7x7 Cube demand absolute consistency across three consecutive solves. A single lockup, pop, or misaligned layer immediately shatters a podium run. Operating on that narrow edge, Hitesh Kumar Bhuwalka delivered a masterclass in risk management, claiming the 6x6x6 Cube title with a winning average of 1:55.47 and sealing the 7x7x7 Cube victory in 3:04.66.
The 6x6x6 Cube contest showcased that unforgiving arithmetic in full. Behind Hitesh Kumar Bhuwalka, Anunak Roy secured the runner-up position with a 3:17.09 average, while Kaarnik Jain took third place at 3:41.16. In the 7x7x7 Cube, Anunak Roy again maintained composure through the extensive solves to finish second with an average of 5:46.25, followed by Sparsh Pathak in third at 6:36.86. Both big-cube finals proved that composure over sustained three-solve sets remains the purest test of endurance at any official WCA competition.
Beyond the large mechanisms, Hitesh Kumar Bhuwalka assembled an extraordinary weekend haul, capturing first place across five distinct disciplines. In 3x3x3 One-Handed, Bhuwalka claimed victory with a 17.49 average and a best single of 14.91. That momentum carried directly into the puzzle variants, where Bhuwalka topped the Megaminx standings with a 1:10.57 average, and secured a razor-thin win in Skewb with an average of 5.18, edging Sahas Darsh Miglani at 5.20 and Soham Baishya at 5.77 on the final podium.
The spotlight also fell on the classic Rubik's Cube and intermediate twisty puzzles, where Amey Gaba emerged as a dominant force. Amey Gaba captured the premier 3x3x3 Cube crown with an average of 8.32, holding off Anunak Roy at 9.95 and Spondon Nath at 10.15 in the 3x3 results from a competitive 57-person field. Amey Gaba added two more gold finishes to the tally, winning the 4x4x4 Cube with a 29.01 average and taking top honours in the 5x5x5 Cube with a mark of 52.37, ahead of Bhuwalka at 59.56 and Jain at 1:17.03.
Behind the top steps of the podium, Howrah Cube Open 2024 featured remarkable personal breakthroughs from competitors taking on demanding programs. Abhigyan Kumar delivered one of the weekend's most drastic improvements, recording a 3x3x3 Cube personal best of 54.44 to drop 60.8 percent from an earlier mark. Atharv Bajoria entered seven events, posting a best finish of 9th in Clock, attempting Clock and Skewb for the first time in competition, and lowering a Pyraminx personal best to 12.63 for a 65 percent leap. Debaditya Ghosh tackled three events, finishing 4th in Pyraminx while slicing 38.6 percent off a 3x3x3 One-Handed best with 20.61 and recording a 4x4x4 Cube mark of 1:01.11.
The spirit of expanding horizons continued through several multi-event programs across the hall. Vadlamudi Harshith took on 10 events, finishing 5th in Skewb while logging first official attempts in 6x6x6 Cube at 4:18.92, Square-1 at 1:49.70, and 4x4x4 Cube at 50.28. Rupam Das entered seven disciplines, earning 5th in Megaminx while making first attempts in Megaminx at 1:39.51, Clock at 12.03, and 4x4x4 Cube at 50.33. Saral Mudunuri placed 9th in the 3x3x3 Cube and set personal bests of 18.13 in 3x3x3 One-Handed, 8.81 in Pyraminx, and 10.34 in 3x3x3 Cube. Sushant Shah completed five events with a 6th-place finish in 3x3x3 Blindfolded, logging maiden attempts in Megaminx and 3x3x3 One-Handed alongside a 1:28.50 4x4x4 Cube best, while Aryansh Agarwal reached 7th in 2x2x2 Cube with a 2.62 best and logged 12.48 in the main event.
In the rapid short-puzzle rounds, Sourayan Chanda captured two separate titles, securing the 2x2x2 Cube victory with a 3.18 average and taking the Pyraminx final in 2.93. Arif Mahmud demonstrated exceptional specialist control, sweeping both Clock with a 10.65 average and Square-1 with a winning mark of 17.13. The 3x3x3 Blindfolded discipline demanded total memorisation and execution in isolation from sight, where Dhruv Agarwal earned the title with a single of 3:16.24, outpacing Rushikesh Kawale at 3:29.40 and Anunak Roy at 7:23.12.
With 39 total podium finishes collected across the full program, the gathering demonstrated the deep technical range of India's cubing community in 2024. From the uncompromising discipline of mean-of-three big cubes to the lightning agility required in side events, speed cubing competitors repeatedly rose to the challenge. As the hall at Shree Shyam Mandir Ghusuridham Sabhagar emptied, Howrah Cube Open 2024 stood as an impressive exhibition of focus, preparation, and precision across every format on the schedule.
