Kunal Oak Sweeps Seven Events as Howrah Cube Open 2023 Anchors the Regional SeasonEnglish

Kunal Oak delivered an extraordinary display of mastery at the Howrah Cube Open 2023, claiming first place across seven separate categories to define the mid-year competitive calendar in eastern India. The tournament, held on May 20 and May 21, 2023, brought together 69 competitors at the Shree Shyam Mandir Ghusuridham Sabhagar in Howrah, West Bengal, India. Staged at a pivotal point in the 2023 speedcubing season, the two-day gathering offered a complete test of discipline across 13 events and 24 rounds, drawing both seasoned champions and emerging solvers eager to stamp their mark before the summer circuit expanded further.

Oak established an insurmountable pace early in the weekend, converting top seeds into gold across almost every puzzle distance. In the traditional Rubik's Cube category, he posted a decisive 8.50 winning average in the final round, anchored by a best single solve of 7.42. The 3x3 results confirmed his authority, placing him comfortably ahead of Saseeth Srilok Majeti, who took second with a 9.22 average, and Shivam Bansal, who rounded out the podium at 10.32. Oak paired that flagship victory with a dominant run in the 2x2x2 Cube, taking the title with a 3.05 average to lead Majeti and Anunak Roy.

The larger cube events turned into a comprehensive showcase for Oak, who swept every multi-layered puzzle on the schedule. He secured the 4x4x4 Cube victory with a 31.22 average, holding off Aditya Bareja's 32.96 and Majeti's 35.18. Moving into the higher orders, Oak claimed the 5x5x5 Cube title in 55.94, outperforming Hitesh Kumar Bhuwalka and Bareja. He extended that unbroken streak across the biggest hardware, winning the 6x6x6 Cube in 1:38.04 and the 7x7x7 Cube in 2:23.44, while adding the 12-sided Megaminx crown with a 1:04.10 average.

The diverse schedule of this WCA competition also created opportunities for other elite specialists to shine across side events. Shivam Bansal put on a masterclass in blindfolded concentration, taking the 3x3x3 Blindfolded title with a winning single of 31.57, well clear of Sayak Moulic and Syon Mukherjee. Bansal doubled his golden tally by claiming the Square-1 championship with a 16.41 average. In other individual disciplines, Saseeth Srilok Majeti captured the 3x3x3 One-Handed event in 14.10, Ayush Patnaik won the Pyraminx with a 3.36 mark, and Anunak Roy clinched the Skewb title averaging 4.83.

The Clock event closed with a tight battle at the top of the standings, as Arghadeep Mukherjee took first place with a 10.88 average. Shivam Bansal secured the runner-up position on the Clock podium at 11.12, followed closely by Spondon Nath in 12.55. Across the entire program, Indian solvers collected all 39 podium places awarded, reflecting the intense local depth present in the venue. For many attendees, the structured schedule offered a rare chance to contest specialized events in a high-stakes arena.

Beyond the championship trophies, the weekend highlighted meaningful milestones for competitors expanding their repertoires. Nirmalya Nandi generated one of the most remarkable jumps of the tournament, taking 56.5 percent off a previous best to record a 3.63 single in Pyraminx while finishing 11th, alongside a 26.9 percent cut in 3x3x3 One-Handed to 31.01 and a first ever Skewb attempt of 7.57. Kushal Jain achieved a major breakthrough in the 3x3x3 Cube, lowering a personal best by 41.4 percent to 16.19 while taking on first ever official attempts in both 4x4x4 Cube and 3x3x3 One-Handed. Nishant Samson Hembrom tackled four events, slicing 34 percent off his 3x3x3 Cube single down to 10.72, making first attempts in Square-1 and One-Handed, and finishing 8th in Square-1.

Other dedicated solvers embraced massive multi-event workloads across both days. Niyati Malhotra contested 11 distinct events, placing 7th in the 7x7x7 Cube, recording a first Megaminx attempt of 3:46.73, and reducing a personal best in the 6x6x6 Cube by 31.3 percent to 3:03.86. Yuvraj Agarwal took on 10 events, finishing 4th in Square-1 while logging first official attempts in the 5x5x5 Cube, One-Handed, and Megaminx. Kirit Biswas entered 9 categories, placing 6th in 3x3x3 Blindfolded while trying Megaminx, 3x3x3 Cube, and Blindfolded for the first time. Md Inzamam Alam took on 8 events with first attempts in 5x5x5 Cube, 4x4x4 Cube, and Megaminx, while Mrinal Ranjan logged first attempts in One-Handed, 2x2x2 Cube, and 4x4x4 Cube.

The smooth execution of the 24 rounds underscored the growing organizational strength of the region as the calendar moves toward upcoming fixtures. Howrah Cube Open 2023 served as an essential benchmark for competitors measuring their mid-season progression across every standard format. With new personal bests recorded throughout the roster and several all-around threats rising to prominence, the speed cubing circuit in Bengal remains primed for an energetic run through the remainder of the competitive year.
