Daniel Rush Commands the Tables at Harvest Moon Cape Town 2024English

Sixteen seconds and sixty hundredths stood as the gold standard when the final round of the single-handed solve concluded in the Western Cape. Single-handed solving demands an extraordinary marriage of table control, wrist dexterity, and hyper-efficient turn economy, where every hesitation costs twice as much as it would with both hands on the plastic. At Harvest Moon Cape Town 2024, held at Kirstenhof Primary School across April 27 and April 28, that discipline took center stage as 28 entrants tackled the puzzle, leaving Daniel Rush atop the podium with a 16.60 second winning average and a crisp 13.31 single.

The 3x3x3 One-Handed final saw fierce international and domestic talent pushing through high-pressure sequences. Canada's Raphael Fast claimed second place with a 21.09 average, while South Africa's Maverick Pearson secured third at 21.35. The single-handed event exemplifies the technical depth found across a modern cubing competition, where specialized grip transitions and ergonomic finger tricks separate podium contenders from the rest of the pack. Across two rounds of play, the discipline delivered some of the most compelling head-to-head moments of the gathering.

Beyond the one-handed action, Daniel Rush engineered an extraordinary weekend in Cape Town, South Africa, collecting top honors across four separate disciplines. In the marquee 3x3x3 Cube, Rush set the benchmark during the 3x3 results with an electric 6.62 final winning average and an event-best single of 5.93 across three full rounds of 38 competitors. Fast took the runner-up spot on the 3x3 podium averaging 10.48, edged just ahead of Jesse Osburn who finished third with a 10.57 mark.

Rush continued his sweep through the heavier hardware, asserting control over both the 4x4x4 Cube and the Megaminx. In the 4x4x4 Cube final, Rush posted a 29.36 winning average alongside a 27.09 single, comfortably leading Maverick Pearson (46.46) and Jesse Osburn (46.53). He then conquered the twelve-sided Megaminx with a 46.80 average, once again pacing Osburn at 1:09.17 and Pearson at 1:20.02. Across 14 total rounds of speedcubing, Rush repeatedly demonstrated remarkable turning consistency across vastly different puzzle geometries.

The broader field of 38 competitors made significant personal strides throughout the weekend at Harvest Moon Cape Town 2024. Xavier Fajemisin shaved substantial time off his previous marks, delivering an 18.04 single in 3x3x3 One-Handed to go 30.9 percent faster than before, while also trimming his 4x4x4 Cube best down to 1:03.98. Milan Blaauw registered a breakthrough one-handed single of 35.31, improving by 35.2 percent, alongside a 17.47 personal record on the standard Rubik's Cube. Ruben Cilliers had a banner outing, lowering his one-handed benchmark to 33.59 and reaching fourth place overall in the 2x2x2 Cube with a 4.01 single.

Fresh milestones and maiden attempts defined the schedule for several rising solvers across the two days. Kaine Alex Wood took on six different events, taking fourth place in 3x3x3 Fewest Moves, recording a 37.14 one-handed personal best, and making a first ever attempt at Megaminx with a time of 4:17.35. Noah Atter also tackled his first Megaminx solve in 2:16.53 while posting a 34.30 one-handed best. Syiam Chandra Tavaria made a first official venture into one-handed solving with a 38.47 mark while setting a 3x3 personal best of 14.25. Luka Korff dropped his 2x2x2 best by 45 percent down to 2.38 seconds, and Liam Swanepoel completed his first WCA competition by entering five events and finishing fourth in Fewest Moves.

Shorter formats also saw brisk racing, led by Raphael Fast in the 2x2x2 Cube. Fast captured the event title with a 2.44 average, having previously recorded a tournament-best single of 1.27. Rush followed closely in second with a 3.52 average, while Osburn claimed third at 3.67. The rapid-fire format brought out fierce competition through three rounds, with solvers generating national records and personal milestones in rapid succession across the opening morning.

Maverick Pearson captured two notable discipline victories of his own in the alternate formats. In 3x3x3 Blindfolded, where competitors rely purely on mental mapping and execution without sight, Pearson led the field with a winning average of 2:03.22 and a best single of 1:57.46, followed by Fast in 3:40.90 and Brent Boswell in 5:26.87. Pearson also shared the top step in 3x3x3 Fewest Moves, matching Fast with an identical 33-move solution, ahead of Rush at 37 moves.

Across two days of intense speed cubing, South African competitors collected 16 podium places while Canadian representation earned five. Harvest Moon Cape Town 2024 highlighted the enduring vitality of the regional scene in 2024, balancing elite podium sweeps with deep personal progress across the entire competitor roster as another memorable tournament weekend concluded.
