Yiheng Wang Dominates 3x3 as Hanoi Summer 2023 Rewards Rock-Solid ConsistencyEnglish
A sub-five-second average on the standard 3x3x3 Rubik's Cube demands flawless execution across multiple solves, and Yiheng Wang delivered exactly that on the final stage in Hanoi, Vietnam. Facing a crowded field of 233 contenders, Wang locked in a brilliant 4.98 winning average to secure first place, punctuated by a best single of 4.08. Lingkun Jiang followed in second place with a 6.96 average, while Ping-Yueh Huang claimed third on a 7.44 mark. The decisive 3x3 results demonstrated how unyielding consistency across all five attempts triumphed over isolated bursts of speed across the weekend.
Hosted at the Newton Grammar School on July 22 and July 23, Hanoi Summer 2023 brought together 251 competitors across 15 events and 20 rounds of action. The gathering served as a bustling cubing competition that drew talent from across Asia, with host nation Vietnam securing 22 podium places, China taking eight, Taiwan and Singapore collecting seven each, and Malaysia claiming one. Throughout the two-day WCA competition, steady pace and disciplined turn control proved to be the defining themes across both small puzzles and larger mechanical challenges.
Wang extended his mastery to the 2x2x2 Cube, taking the top spot with a 1.34 winning average alongside a best single of 1.18. The two-layer contest saw fierce speedcubing throughout the brackets, as competitors pushed rotation speeds to the absolute limit. Lingkun Jiang earned a victory of his own in Pyraminx, compiling a rapid 1.70 winning average to lead the event over Wang's 2.24 and Yutong Wang's 2.96. In Skewb, Nông Quốc Khánh took first place with a 2.84 average, keeping every single turn measured and composed under tournament conditions.
The big-cube events belonged entirely to Đỗ Quang Hưng, who authored a remarkable sweep across four separate disciplines. Hưng captured the 4x4x4 Cube crown with a 24.64 average, finishing ahead of Phạm Đức Phước at 27.63 and Daryl Tan Hong An at 28.86. In the 5x5x5 Cube, Hưng repeated the feat by recording a 47.46 average to edge out Hong An at 51.05 and Ping-Yueh Huang at 53.65. His command of hardware and reduction efficiency made him the benchmark for multi-layered speed cubing throughout the venue.
Hưng continued his dominance in the largest rotational categories, claiming the 6x6x6 Cube title with a 1:31.22 mean and winning the 7x7x7 Cube with a 2:20.15 average. Hong An again claimed second place in the 7x7x7 final at 2:23.15, followed by Trương Khánh Tùng at 2:25.47. In one-handed solving, Ping-Yueh Huang maintained steady rhythm to take the 3x3x3 One-Handed victory with an 11.93 average, besting Hong An at 12.27 and Đỗ Văn Bằng at 13.71.
