Hanoi Side Events 2024 Brings Six Distinct Disciplines to the Table in VietnamEnglish
Six different official disciplines filled a packed 12-round schedule as 77 competitors gathered at the MHDI Building in Hà Nội, Vietnam on March 24, 2024. Hanoi Side Events 2024 put the wide spectrum of modern speedcubing front and center, moving well beyond standard formats to test competitors on non-cubic geometries, mechanical dial faces, and classic rotational puzzles. Across the single-day gathering, solvers took on varied challenges ranging from the twelve-sided Megaminx to the rapid corner-turning Skewb.
The premier 3x3x3 Cube event drew a large field of 75 entrants across two full rounds of action. Phạm Đức Phước captured the title with a winning average of 7.39 seconds, holding off Đỗ Quang Hưng who finished runner-up at 7.48 seconds. Đoàn Anh Dũng secured the third podium step with a 7.63 average. The event featured exceptional speed throughout the bracket, marked by a competition-best single solve of 5.66 seconds, making the classic Rubik's Cube final one of the tightest contests of the entire weekend.
Beyond the traditional cube, Mai Đức Hòa delivered a standout performance by securing victories across two entirely different puzzle platforms. In the triangular Pyraminx event, Mai Đức Hòa topped a field of 35 competitors with a 3.44 average, complemented by a sharp 2.58 single. Đoàn Anh Dũng placed second with 4.40, while Đỗ Quang Hưng took third with 5.05. Mai Đức Hòa returned to the top of the podium in Clock, navigating the double-sided dials to win with a 5.25 average and a 3.13 single, edging Nguyễn Tường Lâm who averaged 5.28, followed by Nguyễn Quốc Nam at 5.89.
The diversity of the lineup was further highlighted in Megaminx, where Đỗ Quang Hưng claimed first place with an impressive 41.92 average and a fast single of 39.32 seconds. Nguyễn Tường Lâm took second place averaging 50.84, while Leow Yi Jun from Malaysia claimed third with 53.50. In the corner-twisting Skewb contest, Nông Quốc Khánh prevailed with a winning average of 3.07 seconds and a 2.49 single. Hoàng Mạnh Cường followed in second at 4.30, and Japan's Kengo James Fukuoka finished third with a 4.81 average in the 28-player field.
The shape-shifting Square-1 tournament concluded with Phạm Anh Quân taking the championship courtesy of an 8.52 winning average and a 6.60 best single. Nguyễn Thái Bình Dương placed second with an 11.73 average, while double-winner Mai Đức Hòa collected yet another medal by taking third with a 12.35 mark. Across every bracket, this cubing competition showed that mastering different mechanical mechanisms demands completely distinct skill sets, from slice turns to rapid tip alignment.
Beyond the medal tallies, the true depth of the tournament appeared in the remarkable breakthroughs achieved across the venue floor. Đặng Hoàng Sơn took on five different events, posting a personal best of 4.19 seconds in Skewb that was 53 percent faster than their previous best of 8.91, alongside first ever official attempts in Clock at 14.62 and Square-1 at 20.59 to finish 12th.
