Baron and Vishne Set the Pace Across Two Days in Rosh HaayinEnglish
Inside the Lev Afek Gymnasium, the turn of the year brought intense focus to the tables as 184 competitors gathered for Hannukubing Israel 2024. Running from December 31 through January 1, 2025, the venue hosted 13 rounds of action across seven different puzzles. In mean-of-3 events and short-format rounds, the margin for error was razor thin. Unlike long multi-stage brackets where an errant turn can be balanced out later, sudden-death setups amplify the cost of every lockup and misaligned layer, turning high-pressure rounds into immediate tests of precision.
Across the schedule, Ben Baron and Yoav Vishne established command over the tournament tables. Baron captured three individual event titles, showcasing exceptional versatility across wildly different hardware. In the 5x5x5 Cube, Baron secured first place with an average of 52.17 seconds, backed by a best single solve of 49.94. Elai Amit-Wender claimed second place with a 56.66 average, while Roy Tamir locked down third at 58.10. Baron also topped the podium in Clock, finishing with a 5.58 average to edge out Baruch Adler at 5.63 and Netanel Pour at 7.21.
The 3x3x3 Cube, the traditional centerpiece of any speedcubing tournament, drew a massive field of 166 entrants through three rounds of Rubik's Cube solving. Yoav Vishne climbed to the top of the 3x3 results by delivering a 6.59 winning average in the final round, highlighted by a sharp 6.41 single. Baron pushed close behind to earn the runner-up position with a 6.78 average, while Elai Amit-Wender completed the podium in third place with a 7.50 mark.
Vishne mirrored that gold-medal performance on the twelve-sided Megaminx, taking victory with a 35.39 average and an event-best single of 33.55. Baron took second place on the Megaminx podium with a 48.30 average, while Inbar Segal claimed the third spot with a 58.31. Together, Vishne and Baron set the competitive standard throughout the two-day cubing competition in Rosh Haayin, Israel, accumulating high placements across both twisty puzzles and mechanical events.
Beyond the championship battles at the top tables, several competitors made substantial strides through wide multi-event programs. Yehuda Lasman tackled seven disciplines during the weekend, achieving a best finish of 38th place in Clock. Lasman delivered a standout personal best of 13.51 seconds in Clock, marking a dramatic 58.4 percent improvement from an earlier 32.46 mark, while also recording a first ever attempt at Skewb in 12.20 seconds and a first Megaminx solve in 2:21.84. Yagel Levi also entered seven events, securing 58th place in Clock while logging first official attempts in 5x5x5 Cube with a 2:08.12, Clock with a 14.54, and Megaminx with a 2:22.13.
Other competitors expanded their profiles significantly across the tournament program. Tomer Rechtman contested six events, finishing 48th in Clock alongside first official marks of 13.45 in Clock, 7.82 in Skewb, and 9.52 in Pyraminx. Yoad Zini Vunsh also completed six events, placing 47th in Clock while logging baseline marks of 16.78 in Clock, 5.02 in Skewb, and 2:42.21 in Megaminx. Yehoshua Mishor recorded a 16th-place finish in 2x2x2 Cube alongside first-ever times in Skewb at 14.05, Megaminx at 2:06.34, and Clock at 14.21. Elkanana Mishor added first marks in Clock at 15.49, Megaminx at 2:59.07, and Pyraminx at 5.45 across six events.
The sprint puzzles delivered tight finishes across multiple elimination stages. In the 2x2x2 Cube final, Baron took top honours with an average of 1.59 seconds and a tournament-best single solve of 0.73. Ben Matyas followed closely in second place with a 1.70 average, and Vishne captured third with a 1.97. The depth of the field in this 2024 contest produced a flurry of quick marks throughout the three rounds of play, reflecting the intense pace of speed cubing at the Lev Afek Gymnasium.
Specialty side events rounded out the podium placements as Talia Albaranes captured the Skewb crown with a 3.42 average and a 3.25 single, finishing ahead of Vishne at 4.14 and Netanel Pour at 4.36. In the Pyraminx, Ben Matyas emerged victorious over 113 competitors with an average of 2.84, while Vishne and Pour rounded out the top three with averages of 3.39 and 3.42 respectively. With every podium spot claimed by local competitors, Hannukubing Israel 2024 concluded an eventful WCA competition and closed out the calendar year on a high note.
