Hangzhou Spring 2024

Yiheng Wang delivered a breathtaking performance in the 3x3x3 Cube final, posting a winning average of 5.27 seconds to capture the premier title at Hangzhou Spring 2024. The single-day WCA competition took place on March 2, 2024, at the Alibaba Binjiang Park in Hangzhou, Zhejiang, China. Navigating three grueling rounds against a massive assembly of 149 Rubik's Cube entrants, Wang maintained total composure under pressure, unleashing a best single solve of 4.00 seconds. Yufang Du applied intense pressure right to the very end, taking second place with an exceptional 5.31 average, while Bofan Zhang locked down the bronze step at 5.56 seconds.

The sheer density of the tournament rosters made every progression stage a hard-fought battle across the 12 rounds of action. With 155 competitors converging on the venue, securing a spot in any final demanded world-class execution from the opening heats. The depth of the field meant that world-class speedcubing contenders were constantly separated by hundredths of a second. Every round eliminated capable solvers who fell just short of qualifying thresholds, underscoring how competitive domestic speed cubing has become in 2024.

Wang proved equally formidable on the smaller puzzle, taking gold in the 2x2x2 Cube with a blistering winning average of 1.19 seconds and a 1.04 single. In that 92-competitor bracket, Huining Huang took second place with a 1.44 average, followed by Bofan Zhang in third with an average of 1.85. The rapid-fire contest saw top-tier speed throughout the preliminary rounds, where Hansen Yu delivered the round's lowest single at 0.88 seconds alongside a 1.62 average.

In the 4x4x4 Cube, Hua Huang conquered the 77-person lineup by recording a 27.14 winning average and the round's best single of 26.02 seconds. The race for the remaining spots on the podium stayed fiercely contested through the final solves, as Yuhang Sun secured second place with a 30.74 average. Lei Liu rounded out the top three by putting up a solid 32.80 average across the five-solve sequence.

Away from the top of the podium, the tournament produced breakthrough moments and personal milestones across the board. Zishuo Wei achieved a standout leap in the 3x3x3 Cube by setting a personal best of 7.23 seconds, which was 55.5 percent faster than a previous mark of 16.24, while also taking 12th place in 3x3x3 One-Handed in a first attempt of 13.39 seconds. Zhihong Lin dropped a 2x2x2 Cube mark by 50.3 percent down to 2.44 seconds, trimmed a 3x3x3 Cube best to 9.41 seconds from 13.51, and completed a first 4x4x4 Cube attempt at 42.96. Qiongli Xu took 11th in 3x3x3 One-Handed with a 12.70 personal best that improved on an earlier 21.49 mark by 40.9 percent, while also tackling the 4x4x4 Cube in 39.71 seconds and 3x3x3 Blindfolded in 5:10.26 for the first time.

Other dedicated solvers embraced heavy event schedules to record memorable career firsts. Xuewei Zhang entered five events, cutting a 2x2x2 Cube personal best by 30.3 percent to 3.80 seconds while logging first career attempts in the 4x4x4 Cube at 50.58 and the Pyraminx at 4.54 seconds. Ying Hu tackled four distinct disciplines, recording a 21.7 percent improvement on the 3x3x3 Cube to reach 11.09 seconds alongside first attempts of 22.63 in 3x3x3 One-Handed and 48.61 in the 4x4x4 Cube. Yuchuan Gao took on five events on the day, logging initial career competition marks in 3x3x3 One-Handed at 18.65, 4x4x4 Cube at 1:07.20, and Pyraminx at 6.73 seconds.

The specialised disciplines provided intense drama throughout the afternoon schedule. In 3x3x3 One-Handed, Tao Wen outpaced a 58-competitor roster to take the victory with a 10.88 average, highlighted by a sub-10 single of 9.81 seconds. Lei Liu earned silver with an 11.95 average, and Zhen Chen took third place with a 12.82 mark. In the 3x3x3 Blindfolded competition, which tests sheer memory and spatial execution without sight, Yifan Wang took first place among 33 entrants with a winning single solve of 18.77 seconds, ahead of Guoliang Wang at 24.31 and Jianing Luo at 26.15.

The Pyraminx event closed out the program with high-speed turning across two competitive rounds. Lingkun Jiang captured the title with a razor-thin 2.16 winning average and a best single of 1.41 seconds, edging out Huining Huang who finished second at 2.35. Yiheng Wang added another podium appearance to a busy schedule by claiming third place with a 2.55 average. As the final 3x3 results and brackets settled, Hangzhou Spring 2024 stood as a testament to the immense depth of talent across every division.
