Big Cubes and Marathon Solves Take Center Stage at Hamchang Winter 2024English

Inside Hamchang High School across November 23 and November 24, tables were lined with precision timers and sprawling puzzle mats as competitors gathered for two full days of high-level solving. The sports hall in 경상북도 상주시 (Sangju-si, Gyeongsangbuk-do), Korea, provided an intense setting where 115 solvers traded strategies and registered official marks across eight distinct disciplines. Over 19 rounds of play, the weekend tested raw hand speed alongside deep technical mastery, drawing solvers together from across the country for an unforgettable late-year showdown.

Nowhere was the physical and mental demand clearer than in the big cube categories, where complex multi-layer puzzles demand sustained focus and finger stamina. The 5x5x5 Cube brought 63 competitors to the stage across two rounds, where every rotation requires processing dozens of pieces without losing flow. Seung Hyuk Nahm captured the victory with a 38.21 winning average, underpinned by a single solve of 35.14. DongSoo Park secured second place averaging 45.20, while Jaemin Chang rounded out the podium at 49.86 in a display of steady pacing.

The test of endurance deepened in the 6x6x6 Cube, where 49 competitors tackled the intricate layers across two demanding rounds. Seung Hyuk Nahm once again proved unbeatable, taking the title with an impressive winning average of 1:10.02 and a best single time of 1:07.95. DongSoo Park claimed the runner-up position with a 1:16.39 average, and Do Hyun Kwon locked in third place with a time of 1:32.75. Managing hardware lockups and high move counts, the podium finishers showcased remarkable consistency throughout the final.

Beyond the marathon puzzles, the premier Rubik's Cube category delivered electric 3x3 results across three competitive rounds with 99 competitors entering the fray. Seung Hyuk Nahm completed a remarkable treble by winning the event with a 6.28 average and a best single of 5.71. DongSoo Park earned the silver spot with an average of 7.19, while Jaemin Chang stood third with a 7.22 mark, capping a tightly contested battle at the very top of the standings at Hamchang Winter 2024.

Away from the top steps of the podium, the open floor told inspiring stories of milestone breakthroughs and personal progression. YoungWoo Na tackled all eight events on the schedule, securing a first ever attempt at 5x5x5 Cube of 3:48.10 alongside a Megaminx debut of 2:07.26, while slicing their Pyraminx personal best down to 7.02, which was 54.8 percent faster than their previous mark. DongGun Kim delivered a stunning Pyraminx personal best of 3.66, improving by 52.6 percent, posted a 21.8 percent drop in 3x3x3 One-Handed with 20.49, and logged a first ever attempt at Megaminx of 1:32.14.

Other competitors also made major strides across multiple disciplines throughout the cubing competition. Chanyul Kim recorded a 3x3x3 Cube personal best of 11.43, marking a 33.9 percent improvement over their previous best, while taking on a first ever attempt at 3x3x3 One-Handed in 31.48 and Skewb in 5.99. Specialist events added further diversity to the WCA competition schedule, requiring totally different turning styles and lookahead techniques. Jaemin Chang triumphed in 3x3x3 One-Handed among 65 participants with an average of 10.54, besting Yoochan Hong at 11.28 and Seung Hyuk Nahm at 11.39. Jaemin Chang also dominated Square-1 with a winning average of 6.61 and a single of 5.42, leading Kyeongmin Choi at 8.42 and SeungO Han at 8.66 in a fast-paced final round.

Side events pushed the speed limits across the remaining tables as the gathering concluded. Kyeongmin Choi won the 49-competitor Megaminx event with a 31.48 average, finishing ahead of DongSoo Park at 34.85 and Park Ji Won at 36.28. In Pyraminx, Minjun Kim edged out the field of 59 solvers to win with a 3.10 average, barely ahead of Kyeongmin Choi at 3.13 and SeungO Han at 3.46.
