Pitkänen Dominates Seven-Event Slate at Gulf of Finland 2024English

Antto Pitkänen turned in a staggering performance across seven disciplines at Gulf of Finland 2024, claiming six gold medals and pushing podium margins down to tenths of a second. The standout Finnish competitor secured victories across multiple puzzle formats, falling short of a complete clean sweep by a mere fraction of a second in the 6x6x6 Cube final. The display defined an intense weekend of puzzle racing held aboard the Megastar and MyStar vessels departing from Länsiterminaali 2 in Helsinki, Finland, over May 18 and May 19, 2024.

The 2024 gathering operated with an exceptionally tight roster of 11 competitors tackling nine rounds of high-intensity solving. In a compact cubing competition, every mistake carries immense weight because advancing through the field demands near-flawless execution across each scramble. With only a dozen contestants battling through the brackets, margins between advancement and elimination vanished, making each round of the speedcubing program an uncompromising test of consistency and poise from the first drop of the timer to the final turn.

The premier 3x3x3 Cube contest highlighted the competitive standard of the weekend as solvers pushed for every fraction of a second. Pitkänen topped the 3x3 results with a decisive 9.77 winning average and delivered a session-best single solve of 8.64 seconds across the two rounds. Simone Cantarelli of Italy pushed the pace to earn second place with a 10.45 mark, while Niko Ronkainen secured third position with an 11.48 average. The classic Rubik's Cube final showed that even within a focused field of ten contenders, sub-ten averages required ultimate precision.

In the 2x2x2 Cube, where eleven solvers entered the fray across two fast-paced rounds, Pitkänen once again led the classification with a 2.40 final average and a 2.04 best single. The competition featured Aaron Fabritius taking the runner-up position on the podium with a 3.92 average, closely pursued by Ronkainen at 4.11. The rapid nature of the event produced rapid times across the entire roster, demanding absolute focus during inspection and execution on every solve in this official WCA competition setting.

Away from the top steps of the podium, several competitors achieved remarkable milestones that highlighted individual progress across the roster. Ilkka Hämäläinen delivered a dramatic breakthrough in the 2x2x2 Cube by recording a personal best of 2.26 seconds, an improvement of 78.2 percent over their previous benchmark of 10.38, while also registering a 36.24 personal best in the 3x3x3 Cube across two events entered. Elias Peltonen took on the 2x2x2 Cube event and established a new personal best single of 4.42 seconds, which shaved 20.1 percent off their previous best of 5.53.

The larger puzzles demanded deep endurance, beginning with the 5x5x5 Cube where Pitkänen produced a winning 1:05.38 average and broke the one-minute barrier with a 59.68 single. Arttu Puttonen took second place with a 1:05.91 average, just over half a second behind the lead, while Ronkainen secured another podium spot in third with 1:11.41. The small field amplified the head-to-head tension as each solve fluctuated the standings, testing the stamina of every participant across five consecutive attempts.

The most dramatic finish of the weekend unfolded in the 6x6x6 Cube, where Andreas Wagner of Austria captured the gold medal in an extraordinary duel. Wagner posted a 2:14.63 winning average alongside a best single of 2:06.41, edging out Pitkänen whose 2:14.81 average fell short of victory by just eighteen hundredths of a second. Puttonen claimed third place with a solid 2:16.67 average, rounding out a podium separated by barely two seconds from first to third place.

Pitkänen extended his dominance into the specialty categories, showcasing incredible versatility across mechanical styles. In the 3x3x3 One-Handed event, Pitkänen claimed gold with a 15.04 average and a 13.38 single, outpacing Ronkainen at 20.59 and Puttonen at 21.80. He followed with a swift 5.08 average in Clock, ahead of Ronkainen at 6.81 and Ivan Kunitcyn at 10.10, before capping his run in Skewb with a 4.10 winning average, where Ronkainen took second at 5.31 and Kunitcyn finished third at 7.03.

The closing rounds brought an exhilarating conclusion to Gulf of Finland 2024, highlighting the strength of speed cubing talent across the Nordic region and visiting competitors. Host nation Finland collected 19 podium finishes, alongside single podium representations from Austria and Italy across the seven featured events. As the competitors completed their final attempts and packed up their timers, the high standard of performance established a memorable benchmark for the next season of regional tournament play.

Antto Pitkänen hallitsi Gulf of Finland 2024 -tapahtumaa HelsingissäSuomi

11 kilpailijaa kokoontui ratkomaan pulmia, kun Gulf of Finland 2024 järjestettiin viikonloppuna 18.–19. toukokuuta 2024.

Gulf of Finland 2024 toi yhteen kokeneet arvokisakävijät sekä uudet harrastajat tarjoten tiukkoja sekuntitaisteluita lajin parissa.
