Guiyang Open 2024

A total of 166 competitors gathered on May 26, 2024, filling the Quwan INTMO Shopping Mall with intense puzzle-solving action across 12 fast-paced rounds. The single-day WCA competition brought a dense schedule of speedcubing to Guiyang, Guizhou, China, testing mental stamina across five different disciplines. Solvers had to balance rapid calculation and mechanical precision as the program moved between multiple rounds of short formats and deep-focus specialty challenges, creating a vibrant atmosphere for everyone involved.

While the standard international speed cubing program often tests pure physical endurance through lengthy marathons on the 5x5, 6x6, and 7x7 big cubes where piece counts soar into the hundreds, this roster shifted that physical strain onto specialized disciplines. Handling the 3x3x3 Blindfolded event demanded exceptional cognitive endurance, requiring competitors to spend significant time holding intricate cube layouts entirely in memory before executing precise algorithmic solutions without sight. That same deliberate, stamina-testing control translated across the tables to the single-hand and mechanical sprint events throughout the day.

The 3x3 results at Guiyang Open 2024 delivered high-level execution right through the finals. Across three rounds featuring 162 competitors, Xuanyi Geng secured the top step of the podium with a winning average of 5.17 seconds on the classic Rubik's Cube, backed by a best single solve of 4.84 seconds. Kaichen Huang followed in second place with an average of 5.81 seconds, while Zhaokun Li took third position with a mark of 6.22 seconds, completing an all-China podium sweep in the main event.

In the 3x3x3 One-Handed division, Yusheng Du demonstrated unmatched dexterity across two rounds to claim the title. Du recorded a winning average of 11.42 seconds alongside the round's best single of 9.11 seconds to outpace a field of 55 competitors. Chengnuo Han earned the runner-up position with a 12.88 average, while Haiming Chen took third with 13.11 seconds. The technical demand of controlling rotations with a single hand required absolute fingertip accuracy, proving just as physically demanding as any extended multi-layer solve.

The 3x3x3 Blindfolded contest proved equally demanding, with 22 competitors taking on the mental marathon. Yifan Wang captured the victory by posting a winning single time of 17.55 seconds. Hongjie Zhang earned second place with a mark of 25.74 seconds, while Yonghao Xu rounded out the podium in third place with a 1:01.69 solve. Wang finished with a DNF average, but the blistering sub-18 single was more than enough to lock down the gold.

Beyond the podium battles, several competitors achieved remarkable milestones away from the spotlight. Songrun Li took on three events, delivering massive personal bests by solving the 3x3x3 Cube in 16.76 seconds, which was 76.5 percent faster than a prior mark of 1:11.38, and finishing Pyraminx in 11.12 seconds, a 44 percent drop from 19.84, while also posting a first official 2x2x2 Cube attempt of 6.75 seconds. Qinglang Liu recorded a 3x3x3 Cube personal best of 7.92 seconds to finish 61.1 percent faster than a previous 20.38, while also taking 15th place in 3x3x3 One-Handed with an initial official mark of 14.45 seconds. Junjie Guo lowered their 2x2x2 Cube best to 3.27 seconds, an improvement of 31.2 percent over 4.75, and tackled debut attempts of 35.64 seconds in One-Handed and 5.48 seconds in Pyraminx.

Versatility was on full display as other solvers expanded their competitive repertoire across multiple events. Zean Zhou entered five disciplines at Guiyang Open 2024, placing 7th in 2x2x2 Cube while recording first-ever official attempts in 3x3x3 One-Handed at 12.20 seconds, Pyraminx at 3.10 seconds, and 3x3x3 Blindfolded at 2:46.19. Shouheng Yin also contested five events, earning an 8th-place finish in Blindfolded with an opening mark of 2:35.12 alongside first attempts of 6.07 seconds in 2x2x2 Cube and 36.66 seconds in One-Handed. Xunmao Wang broadened their experience across four events, logging debut attempts of 4.35 seconds in 2x2x2 Cube, 8.07 seconds in Pyraminx, and 31.48 seconds in One-Handed.

The sprint disciplines moved at a blistering pace, highlighted by Ziyu Ye in the 2x2x2 Cube. Ye won the 126-competitor event with a winning average of 1.15 seconds and a best single of 0.87 seconds. Shuda Huang took second place with a 1.74 average, followed by Anjunyi Zeng in third with 1.87 seconds. In the Pyraminx, Lingkun Jiang navigated three rounds among 97 competitors to finish first with an average of 1.54 seconds and a single of 1.18 seconds. Shuda Huang took second with a 2.47 average, and Yuzhe Wang took third at 3.23 seconds.

Across all five disciplines, Chinese solvers claimed all 15 available podium positions, capping off an intense day of competition in Guizhou. The varied schedule tested every aspect of solving, from blind memorization to split-second turning speed. As the tables cleared at the Quwan INTMO Shopping Mall, Guiyang Open 2024 concluded as a showcase of precision and personal progress, setting high standards as the community looks forward to the next season on the national circuit.
