Blindfolded Mastery and Breakthrough Times Shine at Guangzhou Quiet Day 2024English

Yifan Wang delivered the standout performance of the weekend by racing through a 3x3x3 Blindfolded solve in 16.98 seconds during the finals, securing victory in the event. The performance capped a masterclass of memory and precision that stood as the sharpest single effort of the tournament. The single day of competition drew 69 competitors to the Guangzhou Nanwu Middle School in Guangzhou, Guangdong, China on August 17, 2024. Across five specialized events and six rounds of action, the cubing competition showcased high-level focus and remarkable individual progression.

Guangzhou Quiet Day 2024 was dedicated entirely to the quiet disciplines of speedcubing, centering on memory events and efficiency. Unlike conventional speed cubing meets filled with rapid-fire turns on standard puzzles, this gathering tested patience and calculation across Fewest Moves and three separate blindfolded categories. Competitors took on the classic Rubik's Cube without sight alongside the larger 4x4x4 and 5x5x5 variants, pushing their problem-solving stamina throughout a dense schedule of official World Cube Association competition rounds.

The 3x3x3 Blindfolded competition spanned two rounds and featured 40 competitors navigating the blindfold. In the opening round, Yifan Wang recorded a single time of 16.84 seconds before taking top honors in the final round with a 16.98 single. Kaijun Lin claimed second place on the podium with a mark of 17.66 seconds, having posted 17.90 in the earlier phase. Yuye Yan rounded out the podium in third position with a final single of 21.37 seconds after registering a 24.43 single earlier in the day.

Kaijun Lin proved to be the weekend's dominant force in the marathon events, topping two distinct podiums. In the 3x3x3 Multi-Blind event, which saw 18 competitors prepare multiple puzzles simultaneously, Lin secured the win by successfully resolving 23 out of 30 cubes in a time of 46 minutes and 36 seconds. Haijun Tan finished as the runner-up with 16 out of 20 cubes in 59:32, while Yifan Wang locked up third place by solving 14 out of 17 cubes in 53:50.

Beyond his multi-cube triumph, Kaijun Lin also captured the 4x4x4 Blindfolded title against a field of 17 competitors, putting up a winning single time of 1:20.14. Haozhen Ding earned second place with a time of 3:46.90, followed by Liang Chen in third place at 5:00.94. Ding later claimed a victory of his own in 5x5x5 Blindfolded, leading a pack of 14 entrants with a gold-medal single of 6:38.45. Haijun Tan took second in the big cube event with 9:07.91, while Liang Chen earned another podium spot in third with 10:25.00.

The quietest efficiency contest of the meeting was 3x3x3 Fewest Moves, drawing 44 competitors for a single round of deep analysis. Qijun Miao topped the field with a winning average of 23.33 moves, highlighted by a best single solution of 23 moves. Jibo Zhao secured second place with an average of 24.33 moves. Jiayue Chen and Weijie Jian shared the third step on the podium after both recorded matching averages of 24.67 moves, adding fascinating depth to the weekend 3x3 results.

Away from the top steps of the podium, personal growth defined the atmosphere on the floor. Huai Ma achieved a massive improvement in 3x3x3 Blindfolded, logging a personal best of 3:05.43, which slashed 38.8 percent off their previous mark of 5:03.05. Zhaohe Wang contested two events, achieving a best finish of 15th in 3x3x3 Fewest Moves with a personal best of 38 moves that was 19.1 percent faster than their prior 47, alongside a first ever attempt at 3x3x3 Blindfolded of 3:18.64. Taiji Yi took on five events, finishing 9th in 5x5x5 Blindfolded, posting a first ever attempt at 3x3x3 Blindfolded in 1:00.17, and lowering their Fewest Moves personal best by 11.1 percent to 32 moves. Jingcai Li also tackled five disciplines, finishing 9th in 5x5x5 Blindfolded, setting a first ever attempt at 3x3x3 Multi-Blind with 5/8 in 44:48, and trimming 9 percent off their 3x3x3 Blindfolded best down to 1:52.17.

Other solvers embraced major milestones by tackling complex events for the very first time. Jinge Li entered five events, earning a 6th-place finish in 3x3x3 Multi-Blind with a first ever attempt of 8/10 in 44:15, while also recording a first ever attempt at 3x3x3 Blindfolded in 1:11.98 and a first ever attempt at 4x4x4 Blindfolded in 9:48.11. Yufeng Chen took on three events, finishing 13th in Multi-Blind while logging a first ever attempt at 3x3x3 Blindfolded of 3:08.42 and a first attempt of 50 moves in Fewest Moves. Rui Chen also contested three events, finishing 13th in Multi-Blind, submitting a first ever attempt at Fewest Moves of 45, and achieving a first ever attempt at 3x3x3 Blindfolded in 2:17.87. Cheung Yi Cing took on two events, earning 20th in Fewest Moves with a first ever attempt of 45 moves and adding a first ever attempt at 3x3x3 Blindfolded in 3:09.26.

All sixteen podium positions across the five disciplines went to competitors representing China, reflecting formidable regional strength in blindfolded solving and move optimization. The single-day program demonstrated that progress in competitive cubing relies just as much on quiet calculation as it does on mechanical speed. As solvers concluded Guangzhou Quiet Day 2024, the widespread personal milestones established a strong foundation for the upcoming competition season.
