Methodical Fewest Moves and Rapid Solves Collide at Gesté Une Fois 2024English

Twenty-three total moves stood as the definitive mark of deliberate problem-solving at the Complexe Sportif de Gesté on September 14–15. While the vast majority of cubing events rely on explosive finger speed and split-second decisions, the 3x3x3 Fewest Moves discipline asks competitors to slow down entirely. Across sixty minutes of silent calculation with a pen and a sheet of paper, thirty entrants stripped the Rubik's Cube down to pure spatial geometry. Louis-Marie Ratto demonstrated complete mastery of this analytical craft, winning the event with an exceptional 23.00 average, backed by a best single of 22 moves.

The intellectual duel of Fewest Moves provided a stark contrast to the rest of the 23 rounds scheduled across the weekend. Gesté Une Fois 2024 brought together 98 competitors in Gesté, France, generating a dynamic atmosphere where cerebral puzzle work shared the floor with blistering speedcubing. As the venue shifted between quiet concentration and the relentless clicking of turning plastic, the 14 events challenged solvers across multiple formats, from two-handed sprints to memory-intensive disciplines.

When speed took center stage in the main event, Sebastian Weyer proved impossible to match. In the 3x3x3 Cube competition, which featured a field of 95 competitors across 3 rounds, Weyer posted a winning average of 7.48 seconds alongside the fastest single of the weekend at 5.15 seconds. The 3x3 results confirmed Weyer at the top of the podium, followed by Malo Coraboeuf in second with an 8.61 average and Anton Piau taking third place at 8.75 seconds.

Weyer continued his dominant run in the larger hardware categories at Gesté Une Fois 2024. In the 4x4x4 Cube, Weyer secured first place with an average of 21.60 seconds, outpacing Valentin Hoffmann who finished second at 34.00 and Anthony Lafourcade who placed third at 34.92. Weyer also claimed victory in the 5x5x5 Cube, putting up a winning average of 44.34 seconds. Lafourcade followed in second position with a 55.71 average, while Hoffmann rounded out the top three at 1:00.05.

Away from the podium battles, significant milestones were reached by dedicated solvers testing their limits across multiple categories. Sarah Miloux delivered a standout improvement in Pyraminx, clocking a personal best of 14.08 seconds, which was 41.6 percent faster than her prior mark of 24.10, alongside logging her first official attempts in 2x2x2 Cube at 10.37 and 4x4x4 Cube at 3:15.16. Milo Bertholom similarly took massive strides forward, reducing his 2x2x2 Cube personal best by 38.5 percent down to 5.00 seconds, shaving 24 percent off his Pyraminx best with a 13.01, and recording his first official 4x4x4 Cube result at 2:46.72. Tom Merceron advanced his Skewb personal best to 9.25 seconds, an improvement of 22.1 percent, while registering his first attempts in Square-1 at 59.48 and 3x3x3 One-Handed at 39.52.

The pursuit of expanding event horizons remained a central theme throughout the tournament. Benjamin Auzou tackled nine events over the weekend, claiming 11th in Megaminx while recording debut marks of 1:20.08 in 5x5x5 Cube, 5.46 in 2x2x2 Cube, and a 44 in 3x3x3 Fewest Moves. Nathanaël Lecacheur also took on a heavy slate of nine disciplines, earning 39th in Megaminx and posting his first ever official times in Square-1 at 1:27.62, Megaminx at 4:26.03, and Skewb at 10.67. Clément Goglin entered six categories, logging first-time completions of 4:04.42 in Megaminx, 3:14.90 in 4x4x4 Cube, and 13.57 in 2x2x2 Cube.

Multiple disciplines rounded out an action-packed schedule at Gesté Une Fois 2024. Anthony Lafourcade captured top honors in three distinct formats, winning 3x3x3 One-Handed with an average of 15.93 seconds, Skewb with a 2.74 average, and Square-1 with a 10.58 average. Louis-Marie Ratto followed up his Fewest Moves triumph by taking the 2x2x2 Cube crown with a swift 1.93 winning average. In Pyraminx, Félix Merle took the title with a 3.73 average, while Malo Coraboeuf topped the Megaminx field with a mark of 57.88 seconds.

Memory-based challenges demanded immense focus, with Arthur Garcin taking first place in 3x3x3 Blindfolded with a 23.02 single and also capturing the 5x5x5 Blindfolded victory with an 8:37.00 single. Rodolphe Rouyrre earned top honors in 4x4x4 Blindfolded with a 4:40.78 single, while Wilfrid Py solved 19 out of 21 cubes in 58:47 to prevail in 3x3x3 Multi-Blind. With 39 podium placements for France and 3 for Germany, this WCA competition concluded as a celebrated showcase of speed cubing diversity.

As competitors packed their cubes and score sheets at the Complexe Sportif de Gesté, the 2024 event demonstrated the depth of modern cubing competition formats. From the analytical, quiet puzzle-solving of Fewest Moves to the hyper-fast turn rates of the speed events, Gesté Une Fois 2024 delivered a complete test of skill and calculation for everyone involved.
