Mahtani and Pariyakanok Split the Titles at Future Park Cubing 2023English
Inside the sprawling shopping and entertainment complex of Future Park and Zpell, the tables were set for a fierce weekend of speedcubing. Stacks of timers, display monitors, and competition mats filled the staging area as a massive contingent of solvers gathered in Pathum Thani, Thailand. Over two days on November 4 and 5, 2023, the floor buzzed with the rhythm of inspection, turning plastic, and hands dropping onto pads. Two hundred and four competitors assembled to test their skills across eight total rounds, setting up an intense regional clash across four distinct puzzle categories.
The 2023 calendar brought high expectations to Future Park Cubing 2023, and the main event lived up to every standard of top-tier speed cubing. In the 3x3x3 Cube, a competitive field of 198 entrants battled through two grueling stages to decide the podium. When the final 3x3 results were posted, Natthaphat Mahtani claimed the championship with an outstanding average of 6.94 seconds, bolstered by a best single solve of 6.00 seconds. Mahtani held off a determined charge from Asia Konvittayayotin, who secured second place with a 7.53 average, while Thada Phuenghua finished close behind in third at 7.56 seconds.
Mahtani was not done leaving his mark on the weekend, carrying his fine form into the 3x3x3 One-Handed division. Navigating the unique physical and algorithmic challenges of solving the classic Rubik's Cube with a single hand, ninety-two competitors vied for the title across two rounds. Mahtani took his second victory of the tournament by averaging 11.76 seconds, highlighted by a rapid 10.30 single. Parist Pariyakanok pushed him to the limit in a classic head-to-head battle, finishing as runner-up with an 11.97 average, while Asia Konvittayayotin took third place with 14.35 seconds.
While Mahtani commanded the larger cubes, Parist Pariyakanok established absolute control over the short-format puzzles. In the Skewb tournament, which drew seventy-three entrants over two rounds, Pariyakanok captured the gold with an impressive winning average of 4.17 seconds and a best single solve of 3.79 seconds. Natthaphat Mahtani took the silver medal with a 4.35 average, just edging out Thada Phuenghua, who reached the podium once again with a 4.37 average to claim third place in another tight finish.
The 2x2x2 Cube event delivered some of the most remarkable numbers of the entire WCA competition.
