Memory and Focus Rule the Tables at Fuentenueva 217 Miniopen 2023English

40 minutes and 43 seconds of uninterrupted mental endurance decided one of the weekend's most demanding tests as blindfolded solving took centre stage in San Lorenzo de El Escorial, Madrid, Spain. The Fuentenueva 217 Miniopen 2023 brought together 24 competitors on February 11 and 12 for 10 rounds of high-pressure action across six specialised events. Without the reliance on sight, competitors memorised full layouts before executing algorithms in total darkness, highlighting the razor-thin margin between a flawless submission and a ruined attempt.

Jesús Lindo García stood tall as the standout blindfolded specialist of the weekend, securing a pair of victories across the memory-intensive disciplines. In 3x3x3 Multi-Blind, which required solvers to memorise multiple cubes before donning a blindfold, Lindo García successfully solved all six cubes he attempted, registering a winning mark of 6/6 in 40:43. The competition proved harsh for the rest of the six-person field, as Manuel Prieto de Antón took second place with 3/4 in 28:59, while four other contenders finished without a completed score.

The 5x5x5 Blindfolded event delivered an even heavier test of spatial recall and concentration at the Albergue Fuentenueva venue. With hundreds of pieces to trace and orient purely by touch and recollection, Jesús Lindo García once again claimed the top spot on the podium. His winning single of 37:40.00 stood as the only successful completion in the event, as Manuel Prieto de Antón registered a DNF over the single round.

Beyond the blindfolded tests, Manuel Prieto de Antón put together a remarkably busy weekend at the Fuentenueva 217 Miniopen 2023, competing across multiple puzzle formats and capturing the Clock title. He posted a winning average of 8.28 after securing the round's best single of 6.72. César Pérez García followed in second with an average of 9.35, while China's Zihua Zhao earned third place with a 9.78 average. Prieto de Antón featured on nearly every podium across the schedule, demonstrating broad mastery across varied mechanics.

In the twelve-sided Megaminx event, Raúl Martínez Redondo dominated the single round of 18 competitors, taking the title with a winning average of 46.87 and a fastest single of 41.88. Manuel Prieto de Antón followed in second place with an average of 56.35, while Daniel Ortega Pastor claimed third in 1:11.14. The mechanical challenges of the Square-1 puzzle saw Alejandro Soriano Compta triumph across two rounds, averaging 12.17 to narrowly edge out Iñigo Mallo Lizaso at 12.39 and Prieto de Antón at 13.75.

Away from the top of the podium, several competitors delivered massive leaps forward throughout the weekend. Francisco Montañés Barbudo, tackling three events, slashed his Square-1 personal best by 56.9 percent down to 31.87 and dropped his Megaminx mark by 23.9 percent to 3:28.49. Alejandro Cava entered two events, logging his first ever attempt at Clock with an 18.47 while cutting his Megaminx personal best by 55.1 percent to 1:19.87 on his way to a 5th-place finish. Pablo Corral Villa took on four events, improving his Clock best by 50.6 percent to 14.54, his Megaminx mark by 18.9 percent to 2:11.36, and his 3x3x3 One-Handed time by 8 percent to 27.20.

Progress continued throughout the roster as solvers pushed their boundaries in new disciplines. Mario Juan Lobato entered four events and earned a 4th-place finish in Clock, improving his Clock personal best by 24.6 percent to 8.72, his Megaminx mark by 19.1 percent to 1:38.53, and his one-handed time by 26 percent to 28.89. Jorge Durán Parrilla made his first ever attempt at Megaminx with a 2:50.07 while lowering his one-handed best by 13.7 percent to 41.19 across three events. Meanwhile, Arturo Lizama Montoya tackled two events and recorded his first ever attempt at Square-1 with a mark of 3:13.53.

The 3x3x3 One-Handed competition capped off the weekend with three full rounds of tactical turning, demanding absolute control over standard Rubik's Cube mechanics with a single hand. Pablo Aguilar Dominguez secured victory with a 16.39 winning average in the final, complemented by a round-best 14.91 single. Manuel Prieto de Antón took second place with a 17.48 average, while Megaminx champion Raúl Martínez Redondo finished third at 19.61 in a tightly contested bracket.

With 19 of the 20 available podium places earned by domestic solvers, the cubing competition highlighted the depth of local speedcubing talent in central Spain during the 2023 calendar. From intricate memory puzzles to one-handed speed cubing, the WCA competition delivered memorable 3x3 results alongside dramatic multi-cube feats. As the Fuentenueva 217 Miniopen 2023 drew to a close, competitors left San Lorenzo de El Escorial with fresh benchmarks and new personal standards to carry forward into the next season.
