Valerio Locatelli and Ciarán Beahan Dominate at French Championship 2024English
A total of 280 competitors gathered across the Easter weekend as the spring speedcubing calendar reached its first major peak. Held at the historic Château des Rohan from March 30 to April 1, 2024, the French Championship 2024 served as a critical measuring stick for Europe's top talent. Spanning 16 events and 26 distinct rounds of competition, the gathering offered a comprehensive test of endurance, technique, and nerve across three full days of high-stakes puzzle solving in Saverne, France.
The premier 3x3x3 Cube event drew a massive field of 278 entrants through four demanding rounds of speed cubing. Italy's Valerio Locatelli claimed top honours with a winning average of 6.19 seconds, supplemented by a 5.84 single solve in the final. Germany's Philipp Weyer finished closely behind in second with an average of 6.66 seconds, while France's Juliette Sébastien completed the international podium with a 6.77 average. The high standard of 3x3 results proved that the early-season form is already locked in.
Sébastien enjoyed a standout campaign across multiple categories at this major WCA competition. She captured the 3x3x3 One-Handed title with a 9.64 winning average, besting Switzerland's Eden Robinson-Rechavi at 10.83 and fellow countryman Hugo Spitz at 11.86. In the 2x2x2 Cube event, Diego Fraile took victory for France with a lightning-fast 1.67 average, overcoming Sébastien's 1.79 and Louis-Marie Ratto's 1.84. Fraile's effort led a deeply competitive French podium in one of the weekend's sharpest sprint disciplines.
In the larger Rubik's Cube categories, Ciarán Beahan of Ireland staged an extraordinary sweep of the big cubes. Beahan won the 5x5x5 Cube with a 46.99 average, edging out Swiss competitor Richard Delacoste at 47.48 and Germany's Sebastian Weyer at 48.61. Beahan continued his march in the single-round events, taking the 6x6x6 Cube title with a 1:17.19 average and dominating the 7x7x7 Cube with a 2:00.59 average. Sebastian Weyer took top spot in the 4x4x4 Cube with a 23.20 average.
Away from the podium battles, significant milestones highlighted the middle rounds. Romain Dauguet entered five disciplines and slashed his 2x2x2 Cube personal best by 64.5 percent down to 1.90 seconds, in addition to an 8.4 percent drop in 3x3x3 One-Handed to 23.31 and a debut Skewb solve of 8.64. Pierrick Behr took on seven events, achieving an 81st-place finish in Megaminx, logging his first official Skewb attempt of 11.98 seconds, and dropping his 3x3x3 One-Handed mark by 59.1 percent to 25.36 seconds alongside a 47 percent improvement in the 4x4x4 Cube to 1:05.42.
Broadening their competition profiles, Alexandre Villaudy-Bertrand entered five events and recorded initial career marks in three of them: a 1:32.62 in 4x4x4 Cube, a 16.35 in Pyraminx, and a 46.69 in 3x3x3 One-Handed. Gaspard Fuchs tackled four events, setting debut times in Pyraminx at 10.93, 2x2x2 Cube at 9.07, and 3x3x3 One-Handed at 57.89.
