Yunhao Lou Sets Asian Record as Theodor Nordstrand Takes FMC London Summer 2023English
A total of 28 competitors gathered over the weekend of June 10 to June 11 at Forest Gate Community School in Newham, Greater London, United Kingdom for FMC London Summer 2023. The specialized WCA competition centered exclusively on 3x3x3 Fewest Moves, testing the analytical limits of every entrant across three full rounds of deliberate, calculated problem solving. While standard speed cubing emphasizes lightning execution, this meeting challenged participants to write down the shortest possible solution to scramble sequences using standard Rubik's Cube notation, demanding patience and deep structural insight.
The undeniable highlight of the weekend came courtesy of Yunhao Lou, who etched his name into the record books with a monumental performance. Representing China, Lou delivered an exceptional Asian record average in 3x3x3 Fewest Moves with a mark of 21.33 moves, bolstered by a brilliant single attempt of 20 moves. That continental benchmark raised the standard of play for the entire tournament and highlighted the world-class caliber of planning unfolding on the tables in Newham throughout the 2023 schedule.
When all three rounds concluded, Sweden's Theodor Nordstrand secured the tournament title, putting together a winning average of 22.00 moves and a best single solve of 21 moves. Nordstrand maintained absolute consistency across each attempt to finish atop the standings in the lone discipline of the event. His calculated routines kept him ahead of a fiercely competitive field where every single extra rotation separated victory from defeat across the board.
Right behind the Swedish victor, Jan Bentlage of Germany took second place on the podium with a disciplined average of 22.67 moves. China's Lichi Fang locked down third place with a 23.00 average, also notching a best single solve of 24 moves during the competition. Podiums across the weekend were shared evenly across borders, with Sweden, Germany, and China each claiming one top-three spot at FMC London Summer 2023.
Beyond the podium race, several participants achieved personal breakthroughs and national milestones throughout the tournament. Achim Spies of Germany logged a single of 35 moves and an average of 39.33 moves, while Alex Walker of the United Kingdom recorded a single of 28 moves along with a 31.67 average. Malaysia's Ainesh Sevellaraja put together a 28-move single alongside a 33.67 average, contributing to a vibrant set of 3x3 results across the international bracket.
Away from the top steps of the rostrum, the competition featured massive individual strides and debuts that the final leaderboards do not fully convey. Sam Shaw achieved a substantial personal best of 25 moves, slicing 44.4 percent off a previous record of 45. Kyle Kayden Renatus delivered an equally striking leap, securing a personal best of 36 moves that was 41.9 percent faster than a prior mark of 62, on the way to a 15th-place finish. In addition, Ziang Yan lowered a previous personal best of 60 moves down to 42, an improvement of 30 percent, while Harry Owen trimmed his own best down to 26 moves.
New ventures into the discipline also defined the weekend for several experienced speedcubing entrants who tested the format for the very first time. Jai Willink took on his first ever attempt at 3x3x3 Fewest Moves to notch a score of 32 moves, earning a 13th-place finish. Rayan Islam registered his first official attempt in the event with a 33-move score, Alex Pennington entered the discipline for the first time with a single of 36 moves, and Thomas Patterson tackled his inaugural attempt to post a 42. These breakthroughs captured the quiet progress taking place throughout the field.
High finishes rounded out the weekend for other determined competitors, including Haotian Hu who achieved 6th place, James Wang who secured 7th place, and AJ Nicholls who finished in 8th place overall. The dedicated focus of this cubing competition provided a rare platform where single turns dictated the standings, cementing FMC London Summer 2023 as an unforgettable weekend of precision, records, and strategic brilliance in the British capital.
