Twan Dullemond and Mika Smulders Set the Standard at Ermelo Cubing A 2023English

Inside Sporthal Triade, the atmosphere settled into an intense hush as solvers leaned forward over their timing mats. The silent mental preparation and acute discipline required for blindfolded solving always remind attendees of the extreme focus underpinning every speedcubing discipline. Although memory-based events demand pure isolation from distraction, that same quiet resolve was palpable across all tables in Ermelo, Netherlands on April 22, 2023. A field of 160 competitors gathered to test their skills across 5 distinct events and 8 demanding rounds of high-level play.

The 2023 edition of Ermelo Cubing A 2023 brought together a vibrant mix of veteran contenders and determined challengers. The premier classic Rubik's Cube category served as the ultimate test of consistency over three full rounds of action. Among 159 competitors vying for the title, Dutch standout Twan Dullemond delivered a masterclass. Dullemond captured first place with an impressive 6.60 winning average and logged the best single of the entire event at 5.36 seconds, securing top honors in the final round.

Dullemond was pushed throughout the 3x3x3 Cube contest by fellow countryman Mika Smulders, who claimed the second step on the podium with a 7.86 average. Tomáš Zatroch of Slovakia rounded out the top three by posting a 7.87 average, edging out the rest of the pack in a remarkably tight battle for the bronze. These standout 3x3 results highlighted an elite level of execution on the main stage, showcasing the depth of talent assembled at the venue.

The rivalry between the top two Dutch competitors continued directly into the big cube events. In the 4x4x4 Cube, which featured 95 competitors across a single high-stakes round, Mika Smulders claimed gold by recording a rapid winning average of 27.80 alongside a best single of 25.10. Twan Dullemond finished in second place with a 30.18 average, while Ivo Stoutjesdijk secured third place with a 34.23 mark to complete an all-Dutch podium at Ermelo Cubing A 2023.
