Giovanni Centili Sweeps Big Puzzles as Eretum VII: Farewell 2023 ConcludesEnglish

Fifty-two competitors gathered in Monterotondo, Rome, Italy on December 30, 2023, tackling an eclectic schedule that stretched across six diverse disciplines. The single-day speedcubing meeting packed 11 rounds into the Circolo Bocciofilo Monterotondo Scalo, offering a full showcase of twists, turns, and puzzle mechanics. From the standard Rubik's Cube to towering big cubes, shape-shifting challenges, and memory-intensive blindfolded runs, the roster tested the complete spectrum of solving talent. As the final major speed cubing gathering of the year in the region, Eretum VII: Farewell 2023 highlighted versatility above all else.

The traditional 3x3x3 Cube headlined the timetable, drawing the full field of 52 entrants across three tense rounds. Italy's Giovanni Centili captured the top step of the podium in the final with a winning average of 8.40 seconds, bolstered by a best single of 7.15. Manfredi Italiano claimed second place with an average of 9.57, while Diego Catà secured third in 9.69. The 3x3 results across the earlier rounds showed remarkable depth, with Valerio Locatelli delivering the fastest single of the entire tournament at 6.34 seconds alongside a sharp 6.96 average.

Beyond the classic cube, the program ventured deep into large-layered territory where Centili put on a dominant display. In the 4x4x4 Cube, which drew 42 competitors over two rounds, Centili finished first with a 35.78 winning average and a 32.50 single, holding off Switzerland's Tobias Peter who took second at 36.72 and Sofia Saletnich in third at 37.88. The big-cube prowess carried directly into the massive hardware, where the mechanical complexity and stamina demands multiplied with each extra layer.

Centili completed his sweep of the large puzzles by claiming gold in both the 6x6x6 and 7x7x7 events. Over two rounds of 6x6x6, he recorded a 2:02.86 winning average, finishing ahead of Tobias Peter at 2:04.58 and Sofia Saletnich at 2:31.34. In the single-round 7x7x7 clash, Centili again topped the podium with a 3:25.31 average, besting Peter's 3:27.94 and Marco Rota's 4:00.52. In every multi-layered event, the battle between Centili and Peter pushed solving times down to narrow margins.

The schedule also celebrated non-standard geometry and pure memory trials. In the Square-1, a puzzle known for changing its physical shape mid-solve, Gabriele Buzzi took first place with a 12.22 average, edging out Centili who finished second at 12.56, while Marco Rota placed third at 15.87. Meanwhile, 3x3x3 Blindfolded demanded flawless memorisation and execution without sight across two rounds, where Gabriele Cappelletti secured victory with a winning single of 1:15.69, closely pursued by Michel D'Antoni at 1:16.05 and Centili in third with 1:48.32.

Away from the top steps of the podium, several participants delivered huge breakthroughs across their events. Hermes Spahi took on four events and knocked an astonishing 74.7 percent off his Square-1 personal best to record 27.00 seconds, while also trimming his 4x4x4 best by 20.5 percent down to 56.57 for an 11th-place finish. Andrea Gaggioli contested five events, improving his 3x3x3 Blindfolded personal best by 56.5 percent to 2:29.19 to earn 8th place, while setting a new 4x4x4 mark of 47.74 and logging a first ever attempt at the 7x7x7 Cube with 7:42.21. Daniel Sebastian Barnea sliced 50.6 percent off his blindfolded mark to reach 1:19.02 for 6th place alongside an 8.88 3x3x3 best. Matteo Maniaci tackled three events, posting his first ever Square-1 attempt at 49.75 and slashing his 4x4x4 best by 33.5 percent to 1:38.84.

That same drive was evident throughout the rest of the running order at the cubing competition. Leonardo Oppi entered three disciplines, finishing 4th in 3x3x3 Blindfolded with a personal best of 2:18.60, a 33.1 percent improvement, while also lowering his 4x4x4 time to 54.67. Emanuele Mezzetti concentrated on the 3x3x3 Cube and achieved a personal best of 21.95 seconds, taking 33.7 percent off his previous standard. Flavio Tranquilli took on five separate events, registering his first official attempts in the 7x7x7 Cube at 6:12.34 to finish 8th, the 6x6x6 Cube at 3:12.96, and Square-1 at 39.03. Simone Molinari tackled four categories, logging first attempts in Square-1 at 1:00.53 and 6x6x6 at 5:58.42 while trimming his 4x4x4 best by 20.3 percent to 53.58.

When the final solves were entered into the database, host nation Italy walked away with 15 podium places, while Switzerland earned three across the six featured events. The diverse schedule demonstrated how technical variety brings out distinct strengths across the solving spectrum, from rapid turning to patient large-cube management. With 11 rounds successfully completed in Monterotondo, Eretum VII: Farewell 2023 closed out the 2023 calendar on a memorable note as the WCA competition scene prepared for the next season.
