Austin Chen and Livia Kleiner Excel Across Intense Field in AlbanyEnglish

Inside the spacious halls of the Albany Capital Center, competitors gathered early for a packed schedule of speedcubing action. Tables were lined with timers, mats, and an array of puzzles as thirty-four competitors prepared to test their resolve. The atmosphere in Albany, New York, USA was charged with quiet concentration and rapid turning, setting the stage for a demanding one-day WCA competition where every round required near perfection.

The Empire State Spring Special 2024 brought a remarkably deep field across thirteen distinct events on April 27, 2024. Advancing through the rounds proved to be a difficult challenge for even the most seasoned competitors. With thirty-two entrants lining up for the standard 3x3x3 Cube, securing a spot on the podium demanded remarkable consistency through two tense rounds of head-to-head solving.

When the dust settled in the main event, Austin Chen captured the title with a winning average of 7.74 seconds, supported by a best single solve of 7.17. The 3x3 results highlighted how narrow the margins were, with Livia Kleiner securing second place with an 8.49 average and Curtis Chai taking third with an 8.71 mark. Every solve counted in determining the top spots on the classic Rubik's Cube.

Livia Kleiner delivered a masterclass across multiple disciplines throughout the competition, claiming victory in six different events. Kleiner swept the larger puzzles, winning the 4x4x4 Cube with a 31.59 average, the 5x5x5 Cube in 56.59 seconds, the 6x6x6 Cube in 1:34.41, and the 7x7x7 Cube with a 2:26.17 mark. She also added titles in 3x3x3 One-Handed with an average of 12.56 and Megaminx with a 43.28 average, standing out as one of the most versatile competitors of the weekend.

Shorter formats also saw fierce battles, starting with Curtis Chai putting on a dominant display in the 2x2x2 Cube. Chai won the event with a 1.65 average and a blistering single of 0.96 seconds, leading a podium that included Eli Rogers with a 2.00 average and Ryan Hughes at 2.74. Chai also claimed the Square-1 victory with an average of 10.89 seconds. In Skewb, Ryan Hughes took first place with a 3.88 average, narrowly edging Kleiner's 3.93 average and Evan Liu's 4.71 mark.

Beyond the podium finishes, the Empire State Spring Special 2024 offered compelling personal breakthroughs across the roster. Thomas Zhong shaved 39.5 percent off his previous 4x4x4 Cube personal best to finish in 57.49 seconds and posted his first ever attempt at 5x5x5 Cube in 2:57.27. Alyssa Doane secured a fifth-place finish in Megaminx while trimming 27.5 percent from her 2x2x2 Cube best with a 3.69 mark, alongside her first attempt at Square-1 in 1:09.42. Ayaan Saxena improved his Square-1 mark by 28.7 percent down to 13.01 seconds and took sixth in Skewb, while Angelo Terpening dropped his Megaminx personal best by 26.5 percent to 1:58.36.

The progress continued with several competitors taking on new challenges for the very first time. Benjamin Sorrentino entered his first WCA competition, taking on seven events and logging an opening mark of 3.98 in Pyraminx on his way to an eleventh-place finish. Bryson Rusin also completed his first cubing competition, recording a 10.05 in Pyraminx across five events. Miles Schwarz logged his first ever attempts at 3x3x3 One-Handed in 49.84 and Clock in 20.27, while Gordon R. Holey lowered his Megaminx standard by 7.6 percent to 3:45.21 while securing fourth place in 3x3x3 Blindfolded.

Specialist categories brought additional intrigue to the schedule. Clem Tucker earned a pair of titles, taking the Clock event with a winning average of 4.71 seconds to narrowly defeat Evan Liu's 4.72, and winning Pyraminx with an average of 2.48. In 3x3x3 Blindfolded, where competitors must rely entirely on memorization before donning a blindfold, Evan Liu claimed top honours with a single solve of 1:07.68, ahead of Brandon Villadolid at 1:27.30 and Ryan Hughes at 2:15.82.

The competitive intensity at the Empire State Spring Special 2024 showed the growing caliber of regional speed cubing in 2024. With thirty-nine podium spots earned across fourteen rounds of action, the Albany gathering showcased both elite precision and broad individual growth, capping an exhausting and rewarding day of racing against the clock.
