High Stakes and Tight Margins Define El Carmen de Viboral 2023English

Across 27 intense rounds of action, 62 competitors gathered in Colombia to put their skills on the line in front of the timers. At El Carmen de Viboral 2023, every rotation carried weight, especially in formats where a single mistake removes any safety net. Held at the Centro de Convenciones de El Carmen de Viboral from January 21 to January 22, the WCA competition tested nerve and consistency across 11 different events. With standard average-of-five disciplines offering the comfort of dropping the slowest solve, the unforgiving nature of mean-of-three and multi-solve challenges elevated the weekend pressure, demonstrating how delicate the balance between precision and speed can be.

In the 3x3x3 Blindfolded category, the absence of room for error shaped the final standings decisively. Without the luxury of throwing away a failed attempt, competitor execution had to be perfect from the memorisation phase to the final blind layer alignment. Carlos Miguel Pérez captured the event title with a winning single time of 1:45.59, navigating the field as the only finalist to register a successful mark in the second round, where competitor Juan Manuel Bedoya finished with a DNF. Pérez also dominated the demanding 3x3x3 Multi-Blind event, completing 10 out of 12 cubes in 50:19, while Ale Restrepo took second place with a flawless 2 out of 2 in 16:40.

The premier 3x3x3 Cube competition drew 61 participants over three rounds of world-class Rubik's Cube solving. Juan David Carmona Vásquez emerged victorious in the final round, recording an outstanding winning average of 9.70 seconds alongside the overall best single of the weekend at 7.52. Erick Steven Muñoz Torres followed closely behind to claim the runner-up position with a 10.27 average, while Jefferson Durango rounded out the podium in third place with 10.39. These top-tier 3x3 results confirmed the exceptional standard of speedcubing at the Centro de Convenciones across two full days of high-paced turning.

Carmona Vásquez doubled his gold tally in 3x3x3 One-Handed, securing first place with an impressive 13.34 average and an 11.82 single across 28 competitors. Juan Esteban Ochoa secured silver with an 18.25 average, barely holding off Julián David Idárraga Restrepo, who earned bronze at 18.26. Idárraga Restrepo made up for that slim margin in other disciplines, capturing the Pyraminx crown with a 3.07 average and best single of 2.17 among 33 entrants, while also clinching the 5x5x5 Cube final with an average of 1:10.02 ahead of Juan Manuel Bedoya and Erick Steven Muñoz Torres.

Beyond the championship tier, personal progression provided some of the most compelling narratives at El Carmen de Viboral 2023. Nicolas Ruales posted a dramatic improvement in Pyraminx, cutting his personal best to 4.83 seconds, which was 60.8 percent faster than his previous mark of 12.31, alongside a 30.5 percent leap on 2x2x2 Cube with a 5.24 single.
