Che and Chele Go Head-to-Head Across Ten Events at Edukent Weekend 2023English
A blistering 7.29 second final average in the 3x3x3 Cube by Ianis Costin Chele set the tone for an intensely competitive two days in İstanbul, Turkey. Across July 22 and July 23, 2023, Edukent Weekend 2023 gathered 58 competitors at Edukent Eğitim Kurumları to battle across 10 disciplines and 19 rounds. The Romanian standout edged out Russia's Andrey Che by just six hundredths of a second in the premier event, establishing an electric duel that would define the entire speedcubing program from standard twisty puzzles to specialty side events.
While blindfolded solving at any cubing competition demands absolute memorisation and uninterrupted focus under pressure, this WCA competition tested mental endurance across a broad spread of technical formats. Andrey Che demonstrated remarkable command across the larger cubes and specialty events, capturing five gold medals in total. Che secured the 4x4x4 Cube with a 28.90 average and took the 5x5x5 Cube in 53.68, while also taking top honours in 3x3x3 One-Handed with an impressive 10.67 mark and winning Clock with a 7.02 average.
Che also clinched the 2x2x2 Cube title, registering a 1.62 winning average over Iran's Sam Mehmani at 1.72 and Chele at 2.43. Not to be outdone, Chele swept the remaining categories on the schedule. The Romanian talent secured victories in Pyraminx with a sharp 2.16 average, Megaminx with 41.91, and Square-1 with an 11.18 average. Turkey's own Sarp Abaç interrupted the two-man duel by claiming victory in Skewb with a 6.38 average, edging out the field with a best single solve of 5.07 seconds.
The 3x3 results brought significant celebration for the home nation, with Muhammed Volkan Güngör earning third place on the podium behind Chele and Che thanks to an 8.70 average. Güngör repeated his podium success in 3x3x3 One-Handed, taking third with an 18.75 mark. Kyrgyzstan's Alikhan Zhanybekov also impressed, collecting second place in 5x5x5 Cube with 1:02.84 and third in Megaminx at 1:23.59, while Belgium's Bruno Vervoort secured third place on the 4x4x4 Cube podium.
Beyond the championship battles, several competitors achieved remarkable milestones away from the podium spotlight. Tolga Berat Topçuoğlu delivered one of the weekend's biggest breakthroughs, shaving 58.9 percent off his previous benchmark in the Rubik's Cube to record a 24.13 personal best. Buğra Tosun took on all 10 events, making his first ever attempt at Megaminx with a 1:31.18 result, lowering his Clock mark by 52.3 percent to 18.14, and dropping his 4x4x4 Cube time by 15.1 percent down to 53.25 on the way to a fourth-place finish in 3x3x3 One-Handed. Aras Demirkılıç improved his 3x3x3 Cube time by 49 percent to 38.98, while Kerem Yıldız entered seven events, taking eighth in Skewb with a 5.91 personal best that beat his previous mark by 41 percent.
The progress continued across all experience levels throughout the speed cubing schedule. Çınar Akay Bahalı earned an eighth-place finish in 5x5x5 Cube with a personal best of 1:27.87, representing a 37.1 percent drop, alongside a 16.1 percent improvement in 4x4x4 Cube to 53.68. Sarp Ateş Gürbüzer contested six events, finishing 10th in Megaminx while lowering his Pyraminx personal best by 27 percent to 9.31 and his 2x2x2 Cube time by 20.8 percent to 8.96. Abbas Noorani logged his first ever attempts at Pyraminx with a 10.11 and 3x3x3 One-Handed with a 43.58 while improving his 3x3x3 Cube time by 17.3 percent to 14.45. İbrahim Torun completed his first ever official 2x2x2 Cube attempt at 6.55 and lowered his 3x3x3 Cube best by 8.4 percent to 18.14.
With 55 solvers taking part in the flagship 3x3x3 Cube tournament alone, the gathering highlighted the depth of speedcubing talent in the region. Russia and Romania led the international tally with 10 podium finishes each, while Turkish competitors gathered four podium spots across the two-day schedule. Iran secured two podium placements and Kyrgyzstan collected three, showcasing the broad geographic draw of the event.
The curtain came down on Edukent Weekend 2023 after 19 hard-fought rounds of competition. From Chele's tight victory in the premier event to the five gold medals amassed by Che, the tournament delivered outstanding execution and personal triumphs across all ten puzzle disciplines in İstanbul as competitors set their sights on the next season of WCA competition.
