Competition recap
A written summary of DSK Cube Open 2023, generated from the official results on this page.
Mean-of-Three Precision and Multi-Event Mastery at DSK Cube Open 2023English
Thirty-three point nine four seconds was all it took for Abhijeet Ghodgaonkar to secure victory in the 3x3x3 Blindfolded final, capturing an event where a single lapse in memory destroys an entire mean-of-three attempt. Unlike standard average formats where solvers enjoy the cushion of dropping their fastest and slowest solves, mean-of-three events demand unbroken concentration. A single misplaced turn or hesitation costs dearly across three consecutive solves, and Ghodgaonkar delivered on that razor-thin margin by pairing a winning 33.94 average with a best single solve of 28.36 seconds among sixteen entrants.
The intense discipline of memory and execution set a high standard at DSK Cube Open 2023, which unfolded across January 14 and 15 at DSK School in Pune, Maharashtra, India. A total of 134 competitors assembled to contest 10 events over 17 rounds of competition during the opening month of 2023. The weekend offered a comprehensive showcase of speedcubing disciplines, demanding technical precision from short-format sprints to complex shape-shifting puzzles under the governing rules of the World Cube Association.
The premier 3x3x3 Cube event drew the largest field of the weekend with 125 entrants battling across three rounds of play. When the final round concluded, Siddhesh Pore emerged victorious with an 8.67 winning average and a best single solve of 7.86 seconds. The 3x3 results capped a weekend of deep fields and high-stakes solves, proving once again that consistency under pressure remains the defining benchmark of standard Rubik's Cube solving.
Kalidindi Hardhik Varma orchestrated a remarkable dual victory across intermediate puzzle categories, showing supreme control in both the 4x4x4 Cube and 3x3x3 One-Handed divisions. Varma took gold in the 4x4x4 Cube final with a 34.16 average and a single of 33.05 seconds, holding off Aarav Gandhi at 34.82 and Chetan Roger Dhanjal at 35.33. In the 3x3x3 One-Handed final, Varma topped the 58-competitor field with a 14.20 average, narrowly besting Harsh Arvind Shelwatkar at 14.42 and Aditya Y. Pathak at 15.61 seconds.
Short-format puzzles delivered explosive action on the timer tables. In the 2x2x2 Cube event, Shubham Maharana topped a 98-person bracket with a blisteringly fast 2.03 average and a 1.58 single, finishing just ahead of Arnav Adani at 2.20 and Vandan Gohil at 2.43. Aneesh Sawant captured the Pyraminx crown with a 4.60 winning average, while Chetan Roger Dhanjal claimed top honors in Skewb with a 3.27 average, finishing clear of Pratik Khanna at 3.47 and Vishesh Shetty at 4.67 seconds.
Behind the podium celebrations at this cubing competition were remarkable breakthroughs from competitors expanding their repertoires across new categories. Om Ashish Patil took on four events, securing a 14th place finish in Square-1 while achieving a personal best solve of 23.99 seconds, an improvement of 50.7 percent over a previous best of 48.68, alongside first ever attempts in 4x4x4 Cube at 2:50.26 and 2x2x2 Cube at 6.75. Rohan Parwekar competed in five events, logging first attempts in 3x3x3 One-Handed at 1:16.05 and Skewb at 11.92, while cutting down a 2x2x2 Cube personal best by 30.6 percent to 4.91 seconds. Samarth Jaiswal entered eight events, placing 18th in Megaminx while recording first career attempts in Megaminx at 2:30.96, Clock at 24.66, and 4x4x4 Cube at 1:24.80.
Other dedicated solvers embraced the challenge of brand new disciplines on the tournament floor. Adhwaryu Nilesh Kumbhar entered seven events and earned a 6th place finish in 3x3x3 Blindfolded, logging first ever attempts in Pyraminx at 9.09, 2x2x2 Cube at 1.59, and 3x3x3 Blindfolded at 5:19.78. Aarav Bipin Pote contested five events to reach 12th place in Clock, registering first attempts in 3x3x3 Cube at 24.42, Clock at 13.24, and Skewb at 5.80. Koul then claimed gold in the Clock event, recording a 6.73 average to edge out Neil Gour at 6.79 seconds. With 28 podium finishes going to competitors from India and two to representatives from the USA, the WCA competition reflected a thriving community capable of managing everything from the pressure of mean-of-three blindfolded attempts to the split-second speed of twisty puzzle sprinting as the competitive year got underway.
