Brian Johnson and Carter Kucala Dominate Multi-Round Showdowns in Sturgeon BayEnglish

A razor-thin margin in the premier final set the tone at the Prince of Peace Lutheran Church, where Brian Johnson secured victory in the 3x3x3 Cube with a winning average of 6.63 seconds, edging past Carter Kucala at 6.77. The single-day schedule on May 10, 2025, put pressure on every participant across twelve rounds of competition. Across five events, competitors had to navigate progressive qualification cuts to earn spots in the finals, turning every solve into a test of consistency and precision under tournament conditions.

The Door County Cube Challenge 2025 welcomed 58 competitors to Sturgeon Bay, Wisconsin, USA for an intense day of speedcubing action. With 57 solvers lining up for the standard Rubik's Cube, the three-round progression required steady execution to survive the field reductions. Johnson delivered the best single time of the event at 5.96 seconds during his run to the title, while Simon Kellum claimed third place on the podium with an average of 8.40 seconds, rounding out the official 3x3 results.

The multi-round format also defined the 2x2x2 Cube, which featured 53 competitors battling through three rounds. Carter Kucala took the top spot in the final with an average of 1.65 seconds, backed by a best single of 1.09 seconds. Simon Kellum earned second place with a 1.79 average, while Lucas Lippman-Bruno took third with 1.92. The tight spread at the top highlighted how short-format events leave virtually no room for error when advancing through consecutive rounds.

Pyraminx followed an identical three-round qualification path, gathering 46 entrants at this WCA competition. Carter Kucala captured his second victory of the day with an average of 2.26 seconds, recording a best single of 1.80 seconds. Brian Johnson secured second place on the podium with an average of 3.05 seconds, and Luke Selle took third place with a 3.77 average. The structure rewarded competitors capable of sustaining sub-three-second paces through each stage of the tournament.

In the longer events, the round counts reflected the demanding nature of larger puzzles. The 4x4x4 Cube contest ran across two rounds for 42 participants, where Brian Johnson claimed his second title at the Door County Cube Challenge 2025 by recording a 30.10 winning average alongside a tournament-best single of 28.72. Lucas Lippman-Bruno finished second at 35.08, just one hundredth of a second ahead of Carter Kucala, who took third place with an average of 35.09.

The largest puzzle of the schedule, the 7x7x7 Cube, placed all 15 entrants directly into a single deciding round. Without preliminary heats to find a rhythm, Lucas Lippman-Bruno delivered the winning average of 2:54.92, highlighted by a single solve of 2:44.73. Brian Johnson finished closely behind in second place with a 2:57.43 average, while Carter Kucala completed the podium sweep for the United States with a third-place mark of 3:21.13.
