Dontrien Open 2023 Delivers Huge Personal Bests and Masterful Solving in FranceEnglish

Inside the Foyer Rural in Dontrien, France, tables stood lined with timers, mats, and stopwatches as 47 competitors gathered for two full days of intense speedcubing on January 14 and 15. The opening morning hummed with focused energy as solvers across all experience levels warmed up their hands, inspected puzzle alignments, and prepared to push their limits across eight distinct disciplines. The 2023 event brought 20 rounds of structured play, offering every entrant a proving ground to test their training.

The spirit of self-improvement set the tone throughout the weekend, with competitors frequently smashing their previous marks. Across the classic Rubik's Cube rounds, personal benchmarks fell repeatedly as participants shaved critical tenths of a second off their official times. The atmosphere throughout the cubing competition rewarded relentless practice, and the broader 3x3 results reflected how deep preparation elevated the entire field, turning standard qualifying heats into showcases of clean turning and rapid lookahead.

While the main podium battles drew eyes, substantial milestones unfolded deeper down the rankings. Iraklis Magioglou put on an exceptional display of growth across eight events, dropping his Square-1 single to 13.39 seconds from an earlier mark of 26.10, an improvement of 48.7 percent, while finishing 6th in the event, cutting his 6x6x6 Cube best by 33.3 percent down to 2:44.88, and posting a first official 3x3x3 One-Handed attempt of 29.35. Flavien Bresciani took on four events, securing a 23rd-place finish in the 3x3x3 Cube while cutting his 3x3x3 One-Handed single down to 28.54 from 48.21, making it 40.8 percent faster, alongside a first 4x4x4 Cube mark of 1:26.11 and a first Skewb attempt of 6.37. Gwendal Omelianenko improved his 3x3x3 Cube single by 26.7 percent to 19.19 from 26.17, took 12th in Skewb, and delivered debut times of 1:07.12 on Square-1 and 1:13.61 in 3x3x3 One-Handed.

Other competitors similarly seized the weekend to tackle unfamiliar territory and record brand-new official times. Maxime Calamand tackled all eight events at Dontrien Open 2023, earning a 10th-place best finish in the 6x6x6 Cube with a debut 2:29.62, while also posting initial career marks of 4:00.72 in the 7x7x7 Cube and 21.73 in Square-1. Benjamin Darmon took on eight events as well, logging first-ever attempts of 2:40.10 in the 5x5x5 Cube, 6:41.95 in the 6x6x6 Cube, and 1:10.37 on Square-1. Nathan Keraval entered seven events, reaching 9th place in Square-1 with a debut 18.25 single, while adding maiden attempts of 24.83 in one-handed solving and 3:04.16 in the 6x6x6 Cube. Mattéo Girard also broadened his slate across three events, logging a first 3x3x3 One-Handed mark of 2:29.39 and an initial 4x4x4 Cube time of 2:40.47.

At the sharp end of the main 3x3x3 Cube bracket, Guillaume David from Belgium captured victory with a decisive 8.38 winning average in the final round, highlighted by a sharp single of 7.81. Victor Chenu took the runner-up step on the podium with an 8.59 average, while Lucas Déglise claimed third place with an 8.65 mark. The three-round contest tested stamina and composure, showing how fine the margins can be among the continent's top speed cubing talents.

Lucas Déglise had a prolific weekend overall, picking up titles across two separate categories. In the 4x4x4 Cube, Déglise took the gold with a 28.11 average and a 26.05 single, finishing ahead of Abdelhak Kaddour at 30.23 and Victor Chenu at 33.44.
