Silas Breault and Carter Kucala Split Top Honors in EscanabaEnglish
A razor-thin margin of twenty-seven hundredths of a second settled the main event as Silas Breault edged out Carter Kucala in the 3x3x3 Cube final, posting a winning average of 7.55 seconds against a runner-up mark of 7.82 seconds. The decisive clash set the tone for a thrilling head-to-head duel across the entire schedule. Held at Bay de Noc Community College on March 16, 2024, Delta County Cubing 2024 brought 26 competitors to Escanaba, Michigan, USA for an action-packed, 15-round speedcubing showdown.
The ongoing rivalry between Breault and Kucala proved to be the central narrative of the cubing competition, as the two standout solvers traded victories across all nine events on the roster. Whenever one competitor laid down a dominant average, the other answered immediately on the next puzzle. Across 15 rounds of high-intensity speed cubing, every gold medal went to one of the two rivals, leaving the rest of the 26-person field battling for third place.
Breault asserted his mastery across the larger puzzles, demonstrating remarkable control in the big cube categories. Beyond his triumph in the main 3x3 results, Breault claimed the 4x4x4 Cube crown with an average of 29.67 seconds and a best single of 27.66 seconds, finishing ahead of Kucala who registered 31.32 seconds. Riley Copas rounded out that podium in third with a 49.85-second average.
The big cube dominance continued as Breault swept the remainder of the NxN lineup. In the 5x5x5 Cube, Breault delivered a 51.10-second winning average, keeping Kucala at bay in second place at 59.11 seconds, while Luke Selle took third at 1:27.36. Breault also conquered the massive 7x7x7 Cube with a commanding average of 2:34.94, again placing ahead of Kucala, who finished second with 3:07.73, and Luke Selle, who took third in 3:46.91.
Kucala mounted a fierce counter-attack in the shorter and specialty formats, picking up five event titles to win the overall gold-medal tally. In the 2x2x2 Cube, Kucala secured first place with a 2.70-second average, barely holding off Breault at 2.79 seconds and Linus Vork at 3.44 seconds. Kucala also demonstrated precision in the 3x3x3 One-Handed event, taking gold with a 14.35-second average over Breault at 17.49 seconds and Riley Copas at 17.73 seconds.
The side events rounded out Kucala's haul. In Pyraminx, Kucala topped the podium with a 3.82-second average, besting Carter Cieslewicz at 6.12 seconds and Breault at 6.53 seconds. Kucala captured Skewb with a 3.43-second mark, followed by Linus Vork at 4.66 seconds and Breault at 5.15 seconds. Finally, Kucala completed his five-event sweep by taking the Megaminx title with an average of 45.38 seconds and a single of 43.46 seconds.
