Kyeongmin Choi Claims Triple Victory as Personal Records Fall at Daegu Autumn 2024English

A total of 181 competitors gathered in 대구광역시 (Daegu), Korea, on October 26 and October 27 for an intense weekend of puzzle solving. Daegu Autumn 2024 brought together some of the sharpest speedcubing talents in the country across 6 events and 12 full rounds of action. Hosted at the Daegu Textile Complex, the cubing competition showcased both veteran precision and dramatic breakthroughs. Fans tracking 3x3 results and alternate twisty puzzles across the circuit were treated to extraordinary speed cubing across every bracket in the 2024 roster.

The standout performer of the weekend was Kyeongmin Choi, who produced an exceptional triple-crown performance across three distinct puzzles. In the 2x2x2 Cube final, Choi sealed first place with a 1.63 winning average, highlighted by a best single of 1.27. Choi matched that supreme consistency in the Megaminx, taking the title with an average of 30.33 and a top single solve of 27.97. Rounding out an emphatic run, Choi secured the Square-1 crown with an 8.91 average, holding off a tough field through two demanding rounds.

The 2x2x2 Cube division delivered some of the tightest margins of the entire WCA competition. Behind Choi, DongSoo Park claimed second place with a 1.87 average, while Hajin Jeon stepped onto the podium in third with a 2.00 average. The depth of talent in the 147-competitor field was evident in the preliminary rounds, where high-speed solves were standard. International entrant Tyler Howlett of the USA also broke through the upper ranks, securing strong single marks alongside Korean standouts Shin Myeong Park, Seung Hyuk Nahm, Takahiro Aoki, Lee Seong Vin, and DongKeon Lee.

Beyond the smaller formats, big puzzles and specialist disciplines commanded major attention at Daegu Autumn 2024. Seung Hyuk Nahm captured the 4x4x4 Cube championship in style, posting a blazing winning average of 22.11 and an event-best single of 20.13. DongSoo Park earned the runner-up spot with a 28.42 average, while Choi added to his medal haul by taking third in 30.57. The complex layered mechanics of the 4x4x4 Cube demanded rigorous concentration across both rounds of play.

Side events offered just as much drama as the main stage puzzles. In Pyraminx, Seo Jin Yang stormed to the title with a winning average of 2.22 and a fastest single of 1.87, edging Minjun Kim, who finished second with 2.49, and Tyler Howlett, who earned third with 2.57. Meanwhile, the Skewb final saw SeongYong Yoo take top honours with a 3.88 average over Dongheon Ryu at 3.94 and Choi at 4.15. In Square-1, Jihun Yang and Yi Seung-Woo joined Choi on the podium with averages of 10.65 and 12.73 respectively.

Away from the top of the podium, personal growth and ambitious milestones defined the spirit of the weekend. Lee DoHun delivered a massive leap in Pyraminx, recording a personal best of 8.47 that improved on an earlier 13.48 mark by 37.2 percent, while also tackling the 2x2x2 Cube with a 5.25 single and Megaminx with a 2:51.07 effort. Jung InWon made significant strides in 2x2x2 Cube with a personal best of 5.25, which was 34 percent faster than a previous 7.96 mark, while adding first-ever competition attempts of 22.50 in Skewb and 2:02.39 in 4x4x4 Cube. Dong Hyun Park tackled six separate events across the schedule, earning a best finish of 6th place in Square-1 alongside first-time attempts of 1.58 in 2x2x2 Cube, 4.45 in Skewb, and 13.01 in Square-1.

The ambition continued as competitors ventured into brand-new disciplines on the competition floor. DongKeon Lee took on six events across the weekend, claiming 6th place in 2x2x2 Cube while logging his first official marks in Square-1 at 20.73, Megaminx at 1:13.13, and Skewb at 2.95. JinSuk Lee stepped up for five events, establishing debut official times of 8.52 in 2x2x2 Cube, 19.98 in Skewb, and 3:35.93 in Megaminx. Yeojun Lee also embraced a wide program of five disciplines, registering first-time marks of 14.48 in Skewb, 2:58.70 in Megaminx, and 15.52 in 2x2x2 Cube.

The diverse collection of disciplines tested every dimension of modern Rubik's Cube handling, from rapid finger dexterity to deep algorithmic memory. Across two intense days, 17 of the 18 podium positions went to competitors representing Korea, alongside one podium finish for the United States. As Daegu Autumn 2024 drew to a close, the energy across the venue highlighted not just the brilliance of the champions, but the steady individual progress that drives the broader community forward toward the next competitive season.
