Big Cube Grit and Multi-Event Mastery Defined at Cuboss Open 2023English
The expansive hall of the Life Arena in Uppsala, Sweden, was filled with focused intensity across April 15 and April 16. Tables lined the competition floor as 173 competitors prepared their puzzles, applied tension adjustments, and went through meticulous warm-up sequences. Over 13 separate rounds across the weekend, the air remained charged with the steady clicking of plastic mechanisms and the sharp slap of hands hitting timer pads, establishing a classic atmosphere for high-stakes tournament solving in 2023.
Bigger puzzles require a relentless blend of physical endurance, pattern recognition, and sustained concentration. With 82 competitors taking on the 4x4x4 Cube, managing the increased piece count and edge-pairing steps demanded absolute precision under tournament conditions. Daniel Wallin showcased exceptional mastery on the larger puzzle at Cuboss Open 2023, claiming the top spot on the podium with a winning average of 33.15 seconds and setting the event's best single time at 30.94 seconds. Alexander Tosting secured second place with an average of 35.65 seconds, while Elvin Thorsen took third with 36.28 seconds.
Wallin's technical command extended beyond the big cubes to the specialized blindfolded category. Solving the standard Rubik's Cube without visual aid requires complete mental mapping and total memorisation discipline before execution. Wallin earned the title in 3x3x3 Blindfolded with a decisive winning single of 23.89 seconds, leading the field of 18 competitors. Thorsen followed in second place with a single of 37.29 seconds, while China's Martin Zhang reached the podium in third with a time of 1:49.20.
The premier 3x3x3 Cube event drew a massive field of 169 competitors across three full rounds of action. The 3x3 results culminated in an outstanding performance by Elvin Thorsen, who captured first place with an average of 7.16 seconds alongside the weekend's best single of 5.86 seconds. Tosting earned the runner-up spot with an average of 7.60 seconds, and Remo Pihel from Estonia joined them on the podium in third place with an average of 8.27 seconds in the final round.
Away from the main stage podiums, deep breakthroughs occurred across every event tier of this speedcubing weekend. Olle Tiverman entered 6 events, posting a first ever attempt in 3x3x3 One-Handed at 51.61 seconds, while shaving 61.1% off their previous Skewb best down to 6.24 seconds and lowering their 2x2x2 Cube mark by 61.1% to 3.68 seconds. Alexander Witting logged a first attempt at Skewb in 7.25 seconds, dropped their 2x2x2 Cube mark by 65.6% to 3.05 seconds, and cut 26.8% off their 3x3x3 Cube time to reach 28.24 seconds. Joel Andersson stepped up for five events, logging first attempts in Skewb at 18.29 seconds and 4x4x4 Cube at 2:12.24, alongside a 3x3x3 Cube personal best of 22.83 seconds that was 49.7% faster than before.
The progress continued as Dante Tonring took on five events, achieving a best finish of 48th in 4x4x4 Cube with a personal best of 1:18.70, an improvement of 17.5%, while recording a first Skewb attempt of 13.09 seconds and a 2x2x2 Cube best of 3.03 seconds. Algot Örstadius competed across six events, posting a best finish of 51st in 3x3x3 One-Handed, alongside first tournament marks of 2:38.79 in 4x4x4 Cube, 59.49 seconds in one-handed, and 20.15 seconds in Skewb. Tage Örstadius tackled four events, recording first attempts in Pyraminx at 10.23 seconds and one-handed at 2:11.01, while delivering a 2x2x2 Cube best of 7.79 seconds, 54.2% faster than their previous benchmark.
The competition schedule also tested versatility across short-format and rotational events at Cuboss Open 2023. In the 2x2x2 Cube, Thorsen took victory with an average of 2.12 seconds, ahead of Vincent Rylander at 2.44 seconds and Leo Lindqvist at 2.66 seconds. Thorsen secured another title in Pyraminx with an average of 2.45 seconds, besting Niklas Aasen Eliasson of Norway at 3.91 seconds and Wallin at 4.07 seconds. In Skewb, Thorsen won with an average of 4.17 seconds, flanked by Wallin at 4.50 seconds and Lindqvist at 4.82 seconds.
One-handed solving brought its own physical test, demanding fingertip control and asymmetrical ergonomic manipulation. Leo Lindqvist prevailed in 3x3x3 One-Handed, securing victory with an average of 16.08 seconds and a single of 11.15 seconds. Tosting followed closely behind with an average of 16.30 seconds, while Wallin completed the podium at 16.52 seconds. Across all seven disciplines, Swedish competitors took 18 podium positions, alongside international honors claimed by Norway, Estonia, and China.
As the equipment was packed away at Life Arena, Cuboss Open 2023 stood out as an exemplary WCA competition that celebrated every discipline of modern speed cubing. From the grueling mechanics of big-cube solving to the lightning reflex sprints of 2x2 and Skewb, the weekend highlighted the immense technical preparation required to succeed on the tournament floor, setting a high standard for the competitive season ahead.
