Herman Westerlund Kalland Dominates at Cubing Portal Trondheim 2023English

Herman Westerlund Kalland delivered an extraordinary performance in Trondheim, Norway, capturing the 3x3x3 Cube title with a blistering 7.17 winning average and a single of 6.54. His commanding win stood out as the defining achievement of a packed one-day schedule on December 9, 2023. While traditional speed disciplines test instant reflexes, events like Fewest Moves highlight the deliberate, analytical side of solving where competitors trade rapid finger turns for quiet pen-and-paper calculations. That intellectual contrast framed the atmosphere at Gløshaugen, Kjemiblokk 5, K5, setting the stage for a full program of high-level puzzle solving across four separate disciplines.

The 2023 meeting brought together 39 competitors to contest eight rounds of intense action. A standard WCA competition provides a platform where both methodical strategic thinking and sheer turning velocity share the spotlight. As scrambles were distributed across the tables, the room transitioned seamlessly between focused concentration and energetic speedcubing. The Norwegian contingent proved particularly dominant throughout the gathering, eventually securing all 12 available podium positions across the tournament schedule, turning the regional gathering into an impressive showcase of national talent.

In the flagship 3x3x3 Cube event, 38 competitors took to the tables across two full rounds. Kalland set the pace from the start, claiming the top step of the podium ahead of a formidable field. Knut Skaug Haraldsen took second place with an average of 8.13, while Jonatan Solheim rounded out the podium in third with an 8.72 average. The 3x3 results demonstrated remarkable depth, with finalists trading rapid times under intense pressure as spectators monitored every turn of the classic Rubik's Cube.

Kalland was not done with his main event triumph, returning to the tables to capture top honors in the 2x2x2 Cube as well. He locked down the victory with a sub-two-second average of 1.99, complemented by a best single of 1.59 among 31 competitors. Filip Nilsen pushed hard to take second place with an average of 2.32, while Julian Giæver-Engesmo earned the third spot on the podium with a 3.38 average in the final round of the fast-paced category.

Beyond the top steps of the podium, the tournament provided a stage for several competitors making massive strides in their respective events. Henrik Tvervåg made substantial headway across four events, notching a Pyraminx personal best of 3.68 that was 67.5 percent faster than his previous mark, along with a 2x2x2 Cube personal best of 2.73 and a 3x3x3 One-Handed personal best of 39.20, which improved his prior benchmark by 19.3 percent.
