Christoph Wu Edges Thrilling 3x3 Final at Cubing on the Green MN 2025English
A single hundredth of a second decided the premier event of the weekend in Cottage Grove, Minnesota, USA. In the final round of the 3x3x3 Cube, Christoph Wu posted a winning average of 7.66 seconds to edge Carter Kucala by the narrowest possible margin, as Kucala took second place with a 7.67 average. That breathless finish set the tone for Cubing on the Green MN 2025, a packed one-day competition held on November 15, 2025, at River Oaks Golf Course.
The 2025 gathering brought together 60 competitors across six events and 12 total rounds of play. With a large and motivated field descending on Cottage Grove, surviving the qualifying cuts was a brutal test from the opening solves of the morning. Squeezing into the later rounds required peak efficiency, as dozens of entrants traded rapid times across classic and modern twisty puzzle disciplines.
Nowhere was that battle for survival more evident than in the standard Rubik's Cube. The classic 3x3 results showed 58 competitors fighting through three exhaustive rounds just to reach the final podium. Behind Wu and Kucala, Kaius Young claimed third place with a sharp 7.95 average. Wu also secured the single fastest solve of the event, recording a blistering 6.93 on his way to top honors.
In the short-format puzzles, competition remained just as dense. The 2x2x2 Cube drew 51 entrants into a high-stakes, two-round sprint where mistakes were impossible to hide. Nathan Rahn proved unflappable, locking down the victory with a 1.67 winning average and a best single of 1.49. Kucala pushed him all the way to finish second at 1.79, while James Ekins joined them on the podium with a 2.83 average.
Beyond the fight for trophies, the depth of this speedcubing field was powered by personal breakthroughs. Benjamin Bredy notched massive personal bests across multiple categories, trimming his Skewb mark to 4.25 seconds, which was 72.7 percent faster than his prior standard, while dropping his Pyraminx best to 8.29. Riley Lamm secured a 7th-place finish in 3x3x3 Cube with a personal best of 8.96, a 37.2 percent improvement, while also logging his first ever attempt in 4x4x4 Cube at 1:17.08. Davy Burson cut his 2x2x2 Cube personal best by 56.2 percent to 2.59 seconds and tried 4x4x4 Cube for the first time with a 2:16.79 mark.
Other competitors took on major multi-event schedules to make their mark on the WCA competition scene. Micah Hassler contested six events, registering a 16th-place finish in 4x4x4 Cube alongside a personal best of 1:06.93 that shaved 42.5 percent off his earlier benchmark, as well as making first attempts in Skewb and 5x5x5 Cube. Zeke King finished 8th in 5x5x5 Cube with a personal best 1:21.09, an improvement of 40 percent. Sawyer Peterson took on three events, posting a first 3x3x3 Cube attempt of 22.87 and cutting his 2x2x2 Cube mark by 45 percent to 5.82. Walter Sanborn attended his first official competition, completing all six disciplines on the schedule with a best finish of 11th in Skewb and an initial 2x2x2 Cube effort of 3.91, while Patrick Morgan also debuted across four events with an opening 3x3x3 Cube solve of 17.88.
In the bigger cube divisions, Young delivered a commanding performance across both events. In the 4x4x4 Cube, Young swept the field of 32 competitors with a winning average of 26.27 seconds and a best single of 24.64, holding off Kucala in second at 30.33 and Rahn in third at 32.21. Young doubled his gold medal tally in the 5x5x5 Cube, winning with a 54.20 average and a single of 44.24, ahead of Kucala at 57.93 and Ekins at 1:04.15.
Kucala collected his own share of titles in the side events, proving dominant in Pyraminx and Skewb. In Pyraminx, Kucala led a 50-person field over two rounds to capture first place with a 2.35 average, finishing ahead of Rahn at 2.68 and Young at 6.60. Kucala then mastered the three-round Skewb bracket against 41 competitors, taking the title with a 2.24 average over Rahn at 3.62 and Boyd Mayfield at 5.20.
Across all 18 podium spots awarded on the day, every place went to United States competitors in an exceptional showcase of domestic speed cubing talent. The intense competition throughout the brackets pushed the entire field to their limits. As the tables cleared at River Oaks Golf Course, Cubing on the Green MN 2025 concluded as a standout test of speed, endurance, and technical precision for every solver in attendance.
