A Packed Schedule of Diverse Puzzles Takes Center Stage in MasonEnglish

Inside the Sinclair Community College - Mason Regional Center, the rhythmic clatter of plastic mechanisms filled the room as competitors adjusted to an intensive, multifaceted day of solving. Tables were constantly reset with an array of distinct hardware, shifting from compact cubes to towering multi-layered mechanisms and tetrahedral shapes. The single-day gathering brought 58 competitors together in Mason, Ohio, USA, challenging them to adapt their dexterity across 11 rounds of high-speed play on September 9, 2023.

The tournament schedule offered an expansive demonstration of puzzle variety, demanding entirely different skillsets as the rounds progressed. Entrants transitioned rapidly from the sheer rotational speed required on the 2x2x2 Cube to the deep lookahead and reduction techniques needed for larger layers. The classic Rubik's Cube remained a central fixture, yet it shared the spotlight with asymmetric challenges like the 3x3x3 One-Handed and the geometric turns of the Pyraminx, making this WCA competition a comprehensive test of all-around capability.

Luke Garrett delivered an extraordinary display of versatility across the six distinct disciplines at Cubing by the Kings 2023. Garrett secured first place in five separate events, demonstrating total command whether solving traditional twisty puzzles or larger hardware. His weekend was highlighted by a victory in the 3x3x3 Cube, where he captured the title with a 6.12 winning average and a lightning-fast 5.12 single solve, pacing a field of 57 competitors across three elimination rounds.

The 3x3 results formed only one part of Garrett's dominant run through the Mason bracket. In the 2x2x2 Cube, Garrett secured first place with an impressive 1.44 average, finishing ahead of Sujan Feist who posted a 1.79 average and Jacob Dyland Bennett with 2.21. Garrett then transitioned to the larger layers, taking gold in the 4x4x4 Cube with a 28.70 average over Evan Brown and Braden Richards. He followed that performance in the 5x5x5 Cube, claiming victory with a 55.49 mark over Evan Wright and Richards.

Garrett's adaptability was further highlighted in the 3x3x3 One-Handed event, navigating two rounds to win the final with a 10.38 average ahead of Nolan Wood and Jacob Dyland Bennett. The only title Garrett did not claim at Cubing by the Kings 2023 belonged to Ezra Shere in the Pyraminx division. Shere produced blistering speed across two rounds, averaging 1.82 in the final to take first place ahead of Harsha Paladugu with 1.92 and Steven Wintringham at 2.18.

Beyond the podium steps, the diverse schedule provided ample opportunities for competitors taking on major milestones. Cliford Samuel Pradeep Jelin had an exceptional day across six events, posting a 1.23 single in the 2x2x2 Cube to beat his previous personal best by 54.1 percent, while also recording his first ever attempt at 5x5x5 Cube with a time of 3:22.92. Christian Leach tackled six events, establishing his first official marks in the 2x2x2 Cube at 4.00 and the Pyraminx at 11.73, while cutting his 3x3x3 One-Handed personal best by 42.9 percent to 1:03.09. Jack Amster logged first attempts in 2x2x2 Cube and 3x3x3 One-Handed, alongside a 39.3 percent improvement on Pyraminx with an 8.89 single. Logan Atkinson took on four events, setting an initial 4x4x4 Cube mark of 2:46.29 and slashing his 2x2x2 Cube single by 41.9 percent to 4.61.

The breakthrough performances continued through the ranks as Liam Baker entered six events, logging his first ever attempt at 5x5x5 Cube at 2:47.39 and dropping his 3x3x3 One-Handed personal best by 40 percent to 39.84. Matt Vitelli likewise completed six events, registering a first 5x5x5 Cube single of 3:30.71 and lowering his one-handed mark by 26.4 percent to 54.00. John Milburn III ventured into multiple new disciplines, posting his first official times in 5x5x5 Cube at 3:39.91, 4x4x4 Cube at 1:39.79, and 3x3x3 One-Handed at 53.27. Saathvik Bondalapati made their official debut in the speed cubing community, entering two events and logging first attempts of 8.51 in the 2x2x2 Cube and 34.25 in the 3x3x3 Cube.

The 2023 season in Ohio continues to foster vibrant local participation, bringing together athletes across the full spectrum of twisty disciplines. From newcomers logging their first successful solutions to seasoned contenders pushing the boundaries of mechanical speedcubing, Cubing by the Kings 2023 demonstrated the incredible depth found when multiple puzzle categories are packed onto a single busy stage. As the year winds down, the field in Mason proved that true mastery spans every shape and dimension.
