Bryan Eng Sweeps Big Cubes and 3x3 at The Cube Saturday 2023English

One-handed solving demands an extraordinary degree of ergonomic efficiency, fluid fingertricks, and precise table control to keep turning speed high without losing stability. While single-handed mastery is celebrated across the sport for the intense technical discipline it requires, translating that brand of dexterity to standard two-handed puzzles remains the ultimate benchmark. At Cubing at The Cube Saturday 2023, that exact level of mechanical precision was on full display as Bryan Eng produced a commanding sequence of performances across the premier twisty puzzle categories.

Held at The Cube, Campbelltown Catholic Club in Sydney, New South Wales, Australia on January 21, 2023, the single-day cubing competition brought together 116 competitors across 11 rounds of action. Eng set the standard for the entire meet by capturing three separate gold trophies. In the classic Rubik's Cube main event, Eng secured victory with a 7.54 second winning average in the final round, having already turned in a blistering 6.41 single earlier in the day to lead the field across 3 rounds of 3x3x3 Cube competition.

The 3x3 results in the final round showcased an exceptionally tight contest among Australia's leading speedcubing talents. Taine Cassar pressed closely to claim second place on the podium with a 7.68 average, while Lance Aguilar earned third place with an 8.48 average. The depth of standard speed cubing talent in New South Wales was evident as a total of 116 entrants pushed through the opening phases, producing intense competition across the bracket.

Eng extended his dominance directly into the larger puzzles on the schedule, maintaining unmatched consistency through every turn. In the 4x4x4 Cube, Eng finished first among 65 competitors with a 32.21 winning average and a 29.44 best single, finishing ahead of Aguilar in second at 34.43 and Caleb Clark in third at 37.65. Eng then captured the 5x5x5 Cube crown across two rounds, averaging 59.66 to secure his third victory, while Aguilar took second place with 1:07.03 and Cass Hopkins took third with 1:11.68.

Away from the top steps of the podium, Cubing at The Cube Saturday 2023 offered a platform for substantial personal breakthroughs and first-time attempts. Anubhav Dhruv Ammangi delivered one of the weekend's biggest leaps by recording a 43.83 mark in 4x4x4 Cube, an improvement of 50 percent over his prior mark of 1:27.66, while also taking on 4 events and posting a 9.38 personal best in 3x3x3 Cube. Ryan Jung slashed his 4x4x4 Cube personal record by 44.5 percent to 49.36 and logged his first ever attempt at 5x5x5 Cube with a 1:47.10 finish. James Kort achieved a 32.7 percent drop on the 3x3x3 Cube with a 9.95 single and logged his first ever attempt at 4x4x4 Cube at 59.53. Zoe Wong tackled 5 events on the day, posting a 30.6 percent personal best improvement in Megaminx down to 1:16.52 and logging a first ever attempt at 3x3x3 Cube of 9.89.

The broader lineup of solvers added further depth to the scoreboards across varied puzzle formats. Jonah Jeoun Jeong entered 5 events, earning a 12th place finish in 4x4x4 Cube alongside a first ever attempt at Megaminx of 1:33.57. Nathan Chun also took on 5 events, cutting his 5x5x5 Cube best by 26.1 percent to 1:54.06 while registering his first ever attempt at Square-1 at 54.08. Caitlin Chung entered 4 events, logging a first ever attempt at Megaminx of 2:19.85 and lowering her 3x3x3 Cube best by 11.8 percent to 12.07. Making their debut at a WCA competition, Elijah Lin tackled 5 events including a first ever attempt at 3x3x3 Cube in 12.59, while Ryan Phillips completed 3 events with a first ever attempt at 4x4x4 Cube of 48.00.

The side events provided equally compelling action across the 2023 tournament schedule. In Megaminx, Taine Cassar clinched first place with a 49.00 winning average and a 44.38 best single across two rounds, edging out Eng who took second place with a 50.73 average and Peri Le Dain who finished third at 51.92. The twelve-sided puzzle tested stamina across 36 competitors, highlighting the balance of lookahead and turning discipline required over extended solves.

Square-1 action concluded the weekend's specialized puzzle roster with a tight duel among 23 competitors over two rounds. James Bui took the title with a 13.37 winning average and a 9.33 best single. Eng claimed his fifth podium finish of the day by taking second place with a 14.55 average, followed closely by Clark in third with a 15.59 average.

Across all five disciplines, Australian competitors swept all 15 podium positions at Cubing at The Cube Saturday 2023. Between Eng's dominant triple-victory run, Cassar's Megaminx title, Bui's Square-1 triumph, and dozens of personal milestones achieved throughout the venue, the gathering in Sydney proved to be a vibrant display of speedcubing excellence as competitors look forward to the remainder of the 2023 season.
