Specialists Shine Across Clock and Blindfolded Disciplines at Cuber Jackets Fall 2023English
A blistering single of 16.97 seconds in the 3x3x3 Blindfolded event set the tone for a showcase of niche mastery at the Exhibition Hall in Atlanta, Georgia, USA. Calix Tang captured the blindfolded title with that rapid single solve, standing alone atop a field of 34 solvers who attempted the discipline where competitors must memorize the puzzle entirely before donning a blindfold. That victory established an electrifying rhythm for a packed day of action that celebrated puzzle variety alongside raw turning speed.
Held on October 15, 2023, the single-day gathering brought together 155 competitors across five events and ten total rounds. While standard puzzles drew deep brackets, the non-standard events provided the primary drama. In Clock, Vishwa Sankar delivered a masterclass across two rounds of precision dialing, claiming victory with a 4.28 average and a best single mark of 3.40. Jasper Wolfe-Tham secured second place with an average of 4.43, while Eddie Artze completed the podium with a 5.25 mark.
The Pyraminx event moved at a relentless pace across two rounds, featuring 114 competitors navigating the tetrahedral puzzle. Keon Wilson took the championship title with an exceptional 2.06 average, bolstered by a 1.65 single. Abhinav Govindaraju followed closely behind to claim the runner-up position with a 2.46 average, while Kevin Min took the third step on the podium after registering a solid 2.84 average in the final round.
One-handed solving added another technical test to the schedule, requiring dexterous fingertricks on the standard Rubik's Cube. Eli Parker took top honours in 3x3x3 One-Handed, posting a winning average of 11.95 and the event's best single of 8.95 across two rounds. Tang returned to the podium steps with a 12.68 average for second place, and Andreas Lambropoulos locked in third place with a 12.86 average.
Beyond the championship podiums, the official WCA competition served as a proving ground for several competitors expanding their repertoires. Ella Deroy delivered a massive leap forward on Pyraminx, registering a personal best of 3.52 that was 50.4 percent faster than her prior mark of 7.10, alongside a 40.62 personal best in 3x3x3 One-Handed. Julius Achilles Wilson took on all five events on the schedule, achieving a 17th-place finish in 3x3x3 Blindfolded, logging a first-ever Clock attempt of 11.36, and shaving 43.1 percent off his Pyraminx best down to 8.24. Liam E. Lee tackled four events, recording his first official one-handed attempt at 59.38 and dropping his Pyraminx best by 38.7 percent to 8.33. Mia Money made her first official Clock solve with a 17.50 and cut her Pyraminx best by 31.4 percent down to 8.02.
First-time event entries and personal records continued down the scoresheet. Hudson O'Donnell made his debut attempt at Clock with a 22.95, while dropping his 3x3x3 One-Handed personal best to 28.22 and his 3x3x3 Cube best to 13.84. Xander Curry also tackled all five events, placing 17th in 3x3x3 Blindfolded, logging an 11.24 in his first Clock appearance, and improving his one-handed best to 24.29. Nathan Sachleben ventured into Pyraminx for the first time with an 8.18, logged his first one-handed solve at 34.87, and lowered his Clock best to 10.23. Shiv Talwar had a busy program of four events, logging first-ever official attempts in Pyraminx at 12.18, Clock at 25.60, and 3x3x3 One-Handed at 47.44.
The classic three-by-three event maintained the highest participation of the weekend, drawing 152 solvers through three competitive rounds. Caleb Chen emerged victorious with a final winning average of 6.28 and a round-best single of 6.02, leading the premier speedcubing bracket from start to finish. Nicolás Sánchez captured second place with an average of 7.06, edging Dominic Redisi, who claimed third place with a 7.10 mark to complete the podium.
In the blindfolded event, Tang was joined on the podium by Tien Tran, who secured second place with a 25.78 single, and Jacob Ambrose, who took third place with a time of 1:04.22. Every single podium place across all five disciplines went to competitors representing the United States, capping a completely unified medal table for the host nation throughout the competition.
The single-day speed cubing tournament concluded after ten full rounds of competition, showcasing high-level execution from both seasoned contenders and emerging talents. By delivering fast 3x3 results alongside deep competition in Clock, Pyraminx, One-Handed, and Blindfolded solving, Cuber Jackets Fall 2023 offered a complete celebration of technical versatility and puzzle mastery.
