Nuñez Sweeps the Big Cubes as Precision Meets Pressure at Cube Force Lima 2023English
Inside the bustling corridors of C.C. Mallplaza Comas, the sharp click of plastic echoed through the open spaces as timers stood ready across the tables. Over the weekend of May 20 to May 21, the vibrant energy of Lima, Peru set the stage for a gathering of puzzle enthusiasts determined to test their dexterity and calm under competitive conditions. Spectators and participants gathered in numbers, creating an atmosphere charged with quiet focus right before each inspection phase began.
The large-scale puzzles demanded a completely unforgiving standard of discipline across the schedule. In events scored by a mean of three solves rather than an average of five, there is no safety net, no dropped worst attempt, and no room for a single slip. One slight lockup or misaligned layer can instantly derail an entire round. Marcelo Nuñez demonstrated exceptional composure across these demanding formats, maintaining total control through long turn sequences to navigate the strict conditions that mean-of-three events impose on every competitor.
In the 6x6x6 Cube, Marcelo Nuñez secured the top spot on the podium with a winning average of 1:51.15, posting a best single of 1:47.15 to edge out Benjamín Ochoa, who took second place at 1:57.56, while Kevin Arturo Huamán Ruiz finished third at 2:01.94. Nuñez extended his dominance to the 7x7x7 Cube, capturing first place with a 2:31.22 mean, followed by Ricardo Sanchez Laurencio in second with 2:37.94 and Pedro Giuseppe Garcia Milla in third with 2:50.63. His remarkable multi-event mastery also included victories in the 4x4x4 Cube with a 30.67 average and the 3x3x3 One-Handed event at 13.61.
The 5x5x5 Cube delivered another tightly contested battle among the heavy hardware. Benjamín Ochoa claimed victory with a winning average of 54.80 and the round best single of 49.61, standing atop a podium where Nuñez earned second place with 58.10 and Sanchez Laurencio took third at 59.51. Across all the large cubes, the requirement to string together three clean, uninterrupted solves without an outlier created immense tension at the tables, highlighting the razor-thin margin separating victory from a difficult finish.
Beyond the title chases, the true heart of the weekend was written in major personal milestones across the field. Jose Miguel Pardave Corimanya delivered massive breakthroughs across three events, cutting his 3x3x3 One-Handed personal best down to 21.07, which was 62.2 percent faster than his previous mark of 55.81, alongside a 12.42 in the 3x3x3 Cube that improved his previous best by 50 percent. Tyffany Villanueva entered six events, achieving a best finish of sixth place in Megaminx while logging her first ever attempt at the 7x7x7 Cube with a time of 4:43.20 and knocking 43 percent off her 6x6x6 Cube mark down to 2:19.81. Sebastian Alberto tackled three disciplines, recording his first ever attempt in the 5x5x5 Cube at 1:56.81 and dropping his Megaminx personal best to 1:09.42, a 43.2 percent improvement.
That same drive was evident across multiple categories as solvers expanded their competitive repertoires. Angel Adrian Infante Bautista took on seven events, recording his first ever attempts at 3x3x3 One-Handed with a 43.42 and 4x4x4 Cube with a 1:47.10, while cutting his Pyraminx personal best by 48.1 percent down to 5.26. Josseph Eduardo Gómez Alcántara registered for 12 events, posting his first official attempts in the 6x6x6 Cube with a 2:37.78 and Clock with a 36.32, alongside a Square-1 personal best of 21.96 that was 40.9 percent faster than before. José Ricardo Tarazona Flores entered four disciplines, taking his first ever attempts in Pyraminx at 8.71 and 4x4x4 Cube at 55.28 while dropping his 3x3x3 Cube personal best to 11.77.
The premier event of any cubing competition naturally drew the largest turnout, with 96 solvers contesting the classic Rubik's Cube across three rounds. In the final 3x3 results, Robert Yomi Cadenas Nuñez emerged triumphant, capturing the title with an impressive winning average of 7.19 and a best single of 6.27. In the 2x2x2 Cube, Ronald Fernando Remuzgo Salazar led a 74-competitor field to win in 2.20, ahead of Sergio Minaya Pimentel in second at 2.76 and Garcia Milla in third at 2.79. Garcia Milla had an exceptionally busy weekend, also winning 3x3x3 Blindfolded with a 1:15.59 single.
Side events brought fast action and variety across the 23 rounds. Adrian Lizarbe Estrada won Clock with a 6.24 average, while Jeyson Paul Espinoza Diaz took Pyraminx in 2.52. Elias Alonso Usaqui Cabezas claimed the Megaminx victory with a 45.31 average, and Walter Felix won Skewb at 3.19 ahead of Rodrigo Sasieta Romero at 3.70. Bruno Alonso Villacorta Montoya earned the Square-1 gold with a 10.76 average, edging out Espinoza Diaz at 12.36. Across 13 events, all 39 podium placements were secured by competitors representing Peru.
With 110 competitors taking part, Cube Force Lima 2023 celebrated the full breadth of the speed cubing discipline in 2023. From the unforgiving demands of the mean-of-three big cubes to the rapid turns of short-format puzzles, this WCA competition tested concentration, technique, and stamina. As the tables cleared and timers were packed away, the local speedcubing community left Mallplaza Comas having set a formidable benchmark for the season ahead.
