Brayden Wroten and Stone Amsbaugh Lead Memory Masters at Colorado Brain Freeze 2023English

Inside the Belmar Public Library, the usual hushed atmosphere gave way to absolute concentration as competitors sat before scrambled puzzles with blindfolds nearby. The specialized program demanded total mental stamina across several intense formats, turning every single attempt into a high-stakes demonstration of spatial memory and deep calculation. Across seven demanding rounds of play, the 18 competitors gathered to test the limits of their recall under championship-level pressure.

The one-day WCA competition took place on March 18, 2023, bringing focused speed cubing enthusiasts to Lakewood, Colorado, USA. With five distinct events on the schedule, the meet drew solvers who relish the deepest cerebral challenges the sport provides. From multi-cube blindfolded attempts to exacting move-efficiency puzzles, this cubing competition served as a proving ground where a single misremembered piece could instantly end a title bid.

In the 3x3x3 Blindfolded division, Brayden Wroten delivered a commanding performance to secure the championship victory. Across three rounds of testing, Wroten stood out by recording a winning single time of 38.06 seconds in the final round to lead the podium. Raymos Castillo took second place with a time of 1:15.78, while Stone Amsbaugh locked in third position with a 1:30.06 mark, rounding out an impressive set of 3x3 results.

Brayden Wroten doubled his gold medal count in the 5x5x5 Blindfolded event, which presents some of the steepest mental hurdles in modern speedcubing. Memorizing and executing solutions across the complex puzzle without sight requires extreme precision, and Wroten conquered the 5-competitor field with a winning single time of 11:48.00. Raymos Castillo followed in the runner-up spot with an 18:03.00 single, standing as the only other competitor to complete a successful solve on the podium.

The 3x3x3 Multi-Blind discipline proved to be one of the most demanding events of the gathering, requiring solvers to memorize dozens of Rubik's Cube puzzles consecutively before donning their blindfolds. Stone Amsbaugh claimed the title in sensational fashion by solving 17 out of 20 cubes within a time of 1:00:00. Raymos Castillo secured another silver medal with 10 out of 11 cubes in 58:20, while Brayden Wroten placed third after solving 12 out of 16 cubes in 49:33.

In the technical domain of 3x3x3 Fewest Moves, Alex Walker produced an outstanding 33-move solution across the 60-minute round to capture first place among 17 competitors. Elizabeth Cutting and Raymos Castillo shared second place after each delivering matching 42-move solutions. Cutting soon added a championship of her own in 4x4x4 Blindfolded, winning the event with a single time of 7:35.16, ahead of Castillo at 8:00.07 and Walker at 26:45.00.

Beyond the championship trophies, Colorado Brain Freeze 2023 showcased several personal breakthroughs that formed the emotional heartbeat of the gathering. David Brady turned in an exceptional day across three events, posting a 3x3x3 Blindfolded personal best of 3:20.55, which was 9.7 percent faster than his prior career best, before tackling his first ever attempt at 3x3x3 Multi-Blind with a 2/3 result in 21:35 and finishing fourth in 3x3x3 Blindfolded. William Mitchell logged his first ever attempt at 3x3x3 Blindfolded with a 4:02.76 finish, alongside taking fourth place in 4x4x4 Blindfolded. Zachary Miller achieved his first ever attempt at 3x3x3 Multi-Blind by going 2/2 in 16:55 to take fifth place, while Kaemon Vita took on his first ever attempt at 3x3x3 Fewest Moves, securing fifth place with 50 moves across his three events.

The depth of determination continued across the roster as experienced hands embraced fresh challenges. Kian Cline took on three events and managed his first ever attempt at 3x3x3 Fewest Moves, finishing seventh with 55 moves. Junior Solis contested four separate events and earned a best finish of fourth in 4x4x4 Blindfolded, a mark matched by Ryan Kindt who also competed in four events to place fourth in 4x4x4 Blindfolded. Joaquin Hernandez took on two events and locked in a tenth-place best finish in 3x3x3 Fewest Moves, highlighting the grit shared throughout the entire library hall.

As the final timers stopped, the full measure of Colorado Brain Freeze 2023 was defined by both technical mastery and personal persistence across Lakewood. The competitors solved through intense mental strain, setting benchmarks that will drive training sessions throughout the region as solvers look ahead to the next speedcubing season.
