Sebastian Weyer Claims Triple Victory at Charente Open 2023English

Inside the Salle omnisport, the rhythmic click and snap of plastic mechanisms filled the hall as competitors adjusted their timers, inspected puzzle orientations, and settled into the competition stations. Across the two-day gathering in Sireuil, France, 58 participants gathered to contest 17 rounds of competition across nine distinct disciplines. The championship schedule demanded sharp concentration from the outset, rewarding those who could maintain composure across qualifying rounds and sudden-death knockout phases alike.

The premier 3x3x3 Cube contest stood as the centrepiece of the weekend programme, drawing 55 entrants through three rigorous rounds. Germany’s Sebastian Weyer took top honours in the main Rubik's Cube category, delivering a winning average of 6.91 seconds to claim gold. Quentin Rivault followed in second place with an average of 7.30, while Alexandre Carlier secured third at 7.73. Weyer also recorded the best single solve of the event at 5.50 seconds during his march through the 3x3 results bracket.

Weyer extended his dominance throughout the weekend, securing titles across the heavier NxN puzzles. In the 4x4x4 Cube, he took first place with a 22.54 winning average and a single of 21.87, finishing ahead of Alexandre Carlier who averaged 27.98 and Jules Desjardin at 30.71. Moving up to the 5x5x5 Cube, Weyer topped the standings again with a 49.67 average and a 45.95 single, leading a podium that featured Diego Alfonso in second at 1:00.88 and Desjardin in third at 1:03.88.

French competitors secured 24 podium placements across the tournament, mounting strong challenges in every side event. Diego Alfonso earned a double championship, taking first in Pyraminx with a 2.30 winning average over Jules Desjardin at 2.82 and Nathan Darney at 4.12. Alfonso also triumphed in the twelve-sided Megaminx event, finishing first with an average of 49.78 to lead Desjardin at 54.91 and Théo Girard at 56.73, while placing second in the 5x5x5 Cube and third in one-handed solving.

Short-format puzzles delivered some of the closest margins of the weekend. Quentin Rivault captured the 2x2x2 Cube title with a 2.56 average, edging Alexandre Carlier by a single hundredth of a second at 2.57, as Nicolas Gertner Kilian took third with 2.86. Gertner Kilian claimed his own victories later in the programme, winning the 3x3x3 One-Handed event with an 11.62 average and securing the Skewb gold with an average of 5.35 ahead of Diego Alfonso and Malo Coraboeuf. Arthur Garcin took the top spot in 3x3x3 Blindfolded with a best single of 22.77 seconds.

Behind the title battles, Charente Open 2023 served as a platform for individual milestones across the full field. Léonard Careil Dzellat took on six events, logging his first official attempts at 3x3x3 One-Handed with 42.52 and Pyraminx with 8.33, while cutting his Skewb personal best by 53.9 percent to 5.51 seconds. Between Weyer’s multi-event sweep and the extensive progress seen across the preliminary rounds, Charente Open 2023 highlighted the competitive standard and personal growth driving modern speedcubing forward heading toward the next phase of the 2023 season.
