International Rivalry Sparks High Drama at Camino de la Plata Open 2023English

The shopping concourse at Centro Comercial Camino de la Plata bustled with nervous energy across the weekend of October 21 to October 22. Forty-six competitors gathered in Burgos, Spain, setting up timers and warming up their fingers beneath the bright commercial lighting. Across nine events and twenty-one rounds, the stage was set for a classic clash between Spain's deep roster of domestic talent and visiting powerhouse Antonie Paterakis from the Netherlands, turning the Camino de la Plata Open 2023 into a fierce battle of regional pride.

The marquee 3x3x3 Cube event drew 42 competitors through three demanding rounds. Paterakis quickly established his control over the Rubik's Cube, claiming the top spot on the podium with a decisive 6.84 winning average and a single solve of 6.28. Local challengers pushed hard, with Lorenzo Escobar Kraskouskaya locking in second place with an 8.32 average and Sergio Torrijos Santano taking third at 10.86. The final 3x3 results capped a high-intensity showdown that thrilled the gathering in Burgos throughout the weekend.

Paterakis continued his commanding run in the speed cubing showcase by sweeping several other classic formats. In the 2x2x2 Cube, the Dutch standout secured victory with a blazing 1.50 average, outpacing Spanish finalists Escobar Kraskouskaya and Alejandro Nicolay, who finished on 2.72 and 3.33 respectively. The 4x4x4 Cube saw Paterakis take another gold medal with an average of 29.73 and a best single of 25.93, again keeping Nicolay and Escobar Kraskouskaya at bay in second and third.

The strategic 3x3x3 Fewest Moves contest also went to the Netherlands, as Paterakis recorded a winning 33.00 average across the single round of ten entrants. Escobar Kraskouskaya followed closely in second with 34.67 moves, while Torrijos Santano took third with 40.33. That performance brought Paterakis four total event titles at the Camino de la Plata Open 2023, leaving the Spanish delegation determined to defend their ground across the remaining specialty disciplines.

Spain struck back with authority in the technical and rotation events. Jaime Calzado Gomez put on a masterclass in Skewb, recording a winning average of 3.07 to lead Julio Perugorria Lorente and Alex Rosado Saez de Langarica in a clean domestic podium sweep. Calzado Gomez also triumphed in Clock with an average of 5.41, besting Rosado Saez de Langarica and Escobar Kraskouskaya. Meanwhile, Aratz Larruzea earned top honors in Pyraminx with a 2.80 average, while Samuel María Liñares captured Square-1 in 11.17 over Nicolay and Paterakis.

Julio Perugorria Lorente delivered one of the weekend's sharpest performances in 3x3x3 Blindfolded, an event requiring immense spatial memorisation and total recall. Perugorria Lorente locked down first place with a single time of 46.68 seconds, outperforming Calzado Gomez and Jesús Lindo García. Across the full schedule, Spanish solvers earned 21 total podium places, ensuring that the host nation held the overall medal count against the six podiums earned by the Netherlands.

Beyond the fight for top podium spots, the cubing competition saw remarkable personal milestones achieved across the tournament floor. Lucas Astudillo Sánchez took on four events and delivered a massive Skewb personal best of 10.67 seconds, cutting 44.3 percent off his prior mark alongside a 7.70 solve in 2x2x2 Cube. David de Miguel Falcón slashed 27.1 percent off his 3x3x3 Cube best with a 39.67, trimmed his Pyraminx time to 15.16, and logged his first ever attempt at 2x2x2 Cube at 20.78. Progress continued across the ranks as Alonso Martín Páramo registered his first ever attempt at 4x4x4 Cube in 1:13.71 while improving his 3x3x3 Cube best by 22 percent to 14.22. Jaime Fernández-Abascal Carvajal logged a 19 percent improvement on 3x3x3 Cube down to 36.34 and made his first ever attempt at Skewb in 43.37. Alejandro Melero Santos improved his 3x3x3 Cube time by 16.1 percent to 13.35 and logged first attempts in Pyraminx at 5.70 and 2x2x2 Cube at 5.03.
