Saletnich and Nicolì Lead the Way as Big Cubes Test Precision in CalabriaEnglish

In big cube events, there is no safety net of a dropped worst solve. Across a mean-of-3 format, a single lockup, parity error, or brief hesitation is permanently baked into the final standings. That exact demand for sustained accuracy defined the big cube battles in Lamezia Terme, Italy, where Vincenzo Maria Gammino delivered a masterful display of consistency to conquer the largest puzzles on the schedule. Gammino swept the top step of the podium in both the 6x6x6 Cube and the 7x7x7 Cube, posting winning means of 1:59.12 and 2:47.77 respectively, navigating six grueling solves without a single slip.

Held across March 22 and 23, 2025, at the Grand Hotel Lamezia, Calabria Open 2025 drew a field of 41 competitors tackling 13 events across 19 rounds of official World Cube Association play. While Gammino claimed the largest stages of the big cube program, the wider weekend was characterized by relentless schedules and tight turnarounds. Speedcubing enthusiasts travelled to the southern Italian hub to test their skills in classic speed events, twisty puzzles, and precision disciplines where every solitary turn carries immense weight.

The 3x3x3 Cube competition headlined the weekend, drawing 40 competitors through three rounds of high-intensity solving. Sofia Saletnich captured the classic Rubik's Cube title with an 8.47 winning average in the final round, highlighted by a sharp 7.89 single solve. Alessandro Nicolì claimed the runner-up position with a 9.32 average, while Simone Cantarelli rounded out the podium with a 10.26 mark. These standout 3x3 results formed just one part of a dominant multi-event campaign by Saletnich, who established herself as the most prolific winner across the entire tournament.

Saletnich collected five gold medals in total over the two days of competition. Beyond the standard 3x3x3 Cube, she secured first place in the 5x5x5 Cube with a 1:04.09 average, holding off Nicolì who recorded a 1:08.58 and Gammino at 1:09.90. Saletnich added victories in Pyraminx with a 3.59 average, Megaminx with a 48.62 average, and 3x3x3 One-Handed with a 16.15 average. Nicolì remained her closest rival across several categories, finishing second in One-Handed with 19.52 before claiming the 4x4x4 Cube championship outright with a blistering 32.86 winning average ahead of Saletnich and Cantarelli.

Short-format events delivered their own dramatic margins at Calabria Open 2025. Marco Rota took top honors in the 2x2x2 Cube with a 3.67 winning average, edging past Nicolì at 3.71 and Saletnich at 3.73 in an exceptionally close final. Rota doubled his gold medal haul by securing victory in Skewb with a 5.23 average ahead of Damiano Di Paola and Simone Cantarelli. In specialized events, Chiara Marcucci topped 3x3x3 Fewest Moves with a best single of 27 moves, Alessia Novizio clinched Clock with a 7.45 average, and Claudio Fabrizio Scalia conquered 3x3x3 Blindfolded with a winning single of 52.47 seconds.

Away from the top of the podium, the tournament floor provided a stage for remarkable individual progression and ambitious multi-event schedules. Gerard Petrella tackled four disciplines, slicing 41 percent off his 2x2x2 personal best down to 7.01 seconds, taking 25.6 percent off his 3x3x3 best with a 51.38, and making his first official attempt at Pyraminx with a 22.44. Guglielmo Petrella cut 31.4 percent from his 3x3x3 single to record 13.71, placed 9th in 2x2x2, and logged his first official attempts in both Pyraminx with a 7.10 and 4x4x4 with a 1:32.30. Antonio Mungo made his first official attempt at 4x4x4 with a 2:08.06 while dropping 24.2 percent on 3x3x3 to 12.59 and 21.3 percent on 2x2x2 to 5.39.

The spirit of expanding horizons continued through the rest of the field as well. Miriam Franco contested five events, improving her 2x2x2 mark by 24 percent to 7.76 while trying Skewb and Clock for the first time with results of 26.62 and 30.28. Alessandro Mauro took on 10 events, finishing 8th in Skewb, recording his first Clock and 6x6x6 attempts, and trimming 21.9 percent from his 5x5x5 best down to 2:07.68. Ondřej Galandr entered nine events, placing 5th in Skewb, posting first-time marks in Pyraminx and 7x7x7, and lowering his 2x2x2 best by 20.5 percent to 2.33. Giorgio Brescia contested six events, logging first attempts in Clock and 4x4x4 while dropping his 3x3x3 best by 15 percent to 13.12, while Roberto Franco entered seven events, placed 8th in Pyraminx, and logged debut attempts in Clock, One-Handed, and 4x4x4.

The energetic atmosphere in Lamezia Terme underlined the vibrancy of the regional speed cubing scene throughout 2025. Italian competitors swept all 39 available podium positions across the 13 events, showing impressive depth across both sprint formats and endurance puzzles. For both experienced contenders and emerging talents taking on new challenges, this WCA competition offered an exacting test of nerve and execution.

As the equipment was packed away at the Grand Hotel Lamezia, the weekend left behind a clear demonstration of high-level puzzle solving. From the mean-of-3 precision demanded by the big cubes to the split-second margins of the 2x2x2 final, Calabria Open 2025 delivered an intense, memorable chapter in the national cubing competition calendar.
