Seung Hyuk Nahm Takes Four Titles as Newcomers Shine at Busan Spring 2024English
Inside the halls of Busan Citizens Park in 부산광역시 (Busan), Korea, the steady clatter of plastic pieces turning at blinding speed echoed across two full days of intense solving. A total of 231 competitors gathered on April 6 and April 7, 2024, creating an energetic atmosphere where seasoned veterans and nervous debutants shared side-by-side solving stations. The opening moments of this cubing competition captured the true spirit of the community, as competitors lined up for registration, set down their gear, and stepped up to the official timers to launch the action-packed weekend.
For those taking on their very first rounds, stepping up to the judge table at a sanctioned WCA competition brings a rush unlike practice at home. The structured calls, the strict fifteen-second inspection window, and the sudden drop of hands to start the timer present a real test of nerve. Yet, throughout Busan Spring 2024, dozens of competitors embraced that challenge, transforming weeks of solitary practice into official marks on the international stage while navigating the busy rhythms of multi-round speed cubing tournament play.
Away from the top of the podiums, the heart of the gathering belonged to those expanding their repertoires across multiple disciplines. Seonwoo Na (나선우) took on seven events during the weekend, registering a first ever attempt at Megaminx with a time of 3:03.18, a first Pyraminx mark of 7.20, and a first 3x3x3 One-Handed effort of 49.60. YeJun Jeong (정예준) also tackled seven disciplines, achieving an 11th place finish in Pyraminx alongside first-ever official attempts in Megaminx at 1:59.68, Pyraminx at 4.25, and the 6x6x6 Cube at 2:29.19. Jeon Si Hyeon (전시현) stepped up across seven events as well, posting an initial Megaminx result of 2:11.99, a first 5x5x5 Cube mark of 2:24.18, and an opening 6x6x6 Cube time of 6:58.29.
The depth of participation continued with Zhihao Wang (왕지호), who took on six events and established initial marks in the 6x6x6 Cube at 5:28.86, the 5x5x5 Cube at 2:10.08, and Megaminx at 2:41.94. Moon Joonwoo (문준우) put together a busy seven-event campaign, logging a first Megaminx solve of 1:57.30, a maiden Pyraminx result of 10.10, and a first 3x3x3 One-Handed time of 28.76. Jeongwoo Im (임정우) rounded out these impressive expansions by entering four events, recording a first 5x5x5 Cube effort of 3:24.90, an initial Pyraminx solve of 6.73, and a debut 3x3x3 One-Handed mark of 44.14.
When the spotlight shifted to the premier classic Rubik's Cube category, the 3x3 results delivered exceptional performances across three competitive rounds featuring 217 entrants. Seung Hyuk Nahm (남승혁) captured first place with a winning average of 6.40 seconds and a best single solve of 5.16 seconds. DongSoo Park (박동수) secured second place on the podium with a 7.26 average, while Yi-Fan Wu (吳亦凡) of Taiwan earned third place with a mark of 7.52 seconds, highlighting the international presence at Busan Spring 2024.
Nahm established absolute dominance across the larger twisty puzzles throughout the competition schedule. In the 4x4x4 Cube, Nahm took victory with a 23.87 average and a 22.61 single, leading Jaemin Chang (장재민) in second at 26.58 and Yi-Fan Wu in third at 27.52. Moving up to the 5x5x5 Cube, Nahm posted a winning average of 40.17 and a single of 36.95, ahead of DongSoo Park at 45.39 and Jaemin Chang at 46.91. Nahm completed his four-gold haul in the 6x6x6 Cube, winning with a 1:14.72 average over Park at 1:22.41 and Chang at 1:34.27.
Specialty disciplines provided dynamic battles across both days of speedcubing action. DongSoo Park earned a title of his own in 3x3x3 One-Handed, claiming first place with a 12.53 average and a best single of 9.87 seconds, holding off Seung Hyuk Nahm at 13.43 and Yoochan Hong (홍유찬) at 13.59. In Megaminx, Park Ji Won (박지원) commanded the final with a 32.83 winning average and a single of 31.83, joined on the podium by Choi Hyo-Jin (최효진) in second at 38.48 and DongSoo Park in third at 39.92.
The fast-paced Pyraminx event brought thrilling margins to close out the 16 rounds of competition. Seung-Ho Song (송승호) captured the gold medal with a winning average of 2.41 seconds and a fast single of 1.65, narrowly edging Dohyun Kim (김도현), who finished second at 2.48, and Minjun Kim (김민준) in third at 2.79. Across seven events, South Korean solvers earned 19 podium places while Taiwanese competitors claimed two.
As the timers were packed away and the scorecards finalized, Busan Spring 2024 stood as a testament to the thriving regional community in Korea. From historic multi-event triumphs to the quiet personal milestones of competitors taking their first steps on the official stage, the two-day gathering set an inspiring standard for the competitive season ahead.
