Bálint Csengő and Hungarian Standouts Lead Budapest Summer 2024English

Seventy-eight competitors gathered across June 8 and June 9 at Budapesti Corvinus Egyetem for Budapest Summer 2024, a packed two-day schedule spanning 15 events and 26 rounds. Operating on home soil in Budapest, Hungary, local standout Bálint Csengő turned in an exceptional multidisciplinary showing. Csengő claimed two major blindfolded victories, winning the 4x4x4 Blindfolded event with a 2:15.25 single and taking first place in 5x5x5 Blindfolded in 5:37.02. Alongside his blindfolded triumphs, he earned top-three podium finishes in 3x3x3 Blindfolded, 5x5x5 Cube, 6x6x6 Cube, and 7x7x7 Cube, cementing an unforgettable campaign for the host nation.

The 2024 gathering delivered plenty of high-stakes action across both traditional puzzles and niche formats. Alexey Tsvetkov mounted a prolific run of his own, sweeping five separate events. In the classic Rubik's Cube category, Tsvetkov topped the 3x3 results by posting a winning average of 6.64 seconds across three rounds, backed by the round best single of 5.66 seconds. Hungarian competitors stayed hot on his heels throughout the final, with Gergő Zalán Molnár securing second place on a 7.41 average and Gábor Slezák capturing third with 7.69 seconds.

Tsvetkov continued his dominance through several other brackets at this major WCA competition. In the 2x2x2 Cube, he locked down the title with a rapid 1.28-second final average, having recorded a best single of 0.99 seconds. His versatile rotation carried over to Pyraminx with a 1.66 winning average, 3x3x3 One-Handed with a 10.65 average, and Skewb with a 2.62 average. In the Skewb final, Hungary took the remaining podium spots as Bence Kiácz averaged 3.24 for second place and Dániel Székely posted 3.36 for third.

Large cube events showcased Hungarian talent at the top of the standings. Gergely Novotni secured victory in the 4x4x4 Cube with a winning average of 29.22 seconds and added two more gold placements by averaging 41.28 seconds in Megaminx and 1:43.65 in 6x6x6 Cube. Novotni also finished as runner-up in both the 5x5x5 Cube and 7x7x7 Cube. In the 5x5x5 Cube final, Róbert Maróti took top honours with a 53.98 average, while Bence Barát won the 7x7x7 Cube with an impressive average of 2:22.72.

The specialised disciplines provided intense head-to-head moments throughout the weekend. Austria's Maxim Pürstinger secured first place in 3x3x3 Blindfolded with a 29.15-second average, narrowly ahead of Csengő's 27.11 single-led second-place finish and Mihály Horváth in third at 34.71 seconds. Szabolcs Szántai won Square-1 with an average of 9.87 seconds, and Caleb Kearney collected the Clock title with an average of 5.75 seconds. In total, Hungarian participants captured 36 podium positions across the cubing competition.

Beyond the championship trophies, Budapest Summer 2024 provided a testing ground for personal progression. Csaba Karácsony logged a massive personal best in Skewb of 6.40 seconds, cutting 60.1% off his previous mark of 16.05. Márton Pap took on nine events, dropping his Clock personal best by 52% down to 12.27 seconds and improving his 3x3x3 One-Handed mark to 19.67 seconds, alongside a 21st-place finish in 6x6x6 Cube. Noé Vízhányó tackled 11 events, achieving a 29.34 personal best in 3x3x3 One-Handed that was 40.3% faster than before, as well as making first attempts in Megaminx at 1:47.54 and 5x5x5 Cube at 3:49.53, while placing 16th in Square-1.

That drive to explore new categories was shared by several other competitors on the venue floor. Márk Barassevich entered 10 events, logging debut attempts in 5x5x5 Cube at 2:47.49, Clock at 30.02, and Megaminx at 2:39.70, where he earned 22nd place. Ágoston Érsek entered five events, recording his first official attempts in 2x2x2 Cube with a 2.82 single, 4x4x4 Cube at 49.40, and Megaminx at 2:15.31 to place 21st. Gergő Barta tackled four events, making his 4x4x4 Cube debut in 2:12.14 and cutting his 2x2x2 Cube mark by 37.9% to 8.09 seconds. Lola Pap took on six disciplines, setting a 4x4x4 Cube personal best of 40.63, a 14th-place Megaminx debut of 1:29.99, and a first 3x3x3 Blindfolded mark of 3:30.01.

With 15 events concluded and 26 total rounds decided, this speed cubing festival highlighted the extraordinary depth of local speedcubing talent in central Europe. From standard Rubik's Cube races to demanding memory tests in blindfolded solving, the community delivered memorable performances that will fuel motivation heading into the upcoming season.

A feszült figyelem és a forgatások ritmusa meghatározta a termek hangulatát, miközben a versenyzők ujjaik finom mozdulataival igyekeztek a lehető leggyorsabban kirakni a kockákat a June 8–2024 (day: 9) időszakban lezajlott hétvégén. A fővárosi esemény a nemzetközi mezőny mellett a hazai tehetségek legjavát is vonzotta.

Ezen a hétvégén a 3x3x3 One-Handed versenyszámban Alexey Tsvetkov bizonyult a legpontosabbnak: stabil, megbízható megoldásaival 10.65-ös átlagot hozott össze, miközben a mezőny legjobb egyéni idejét is ő jegyezte 8.69 másodperccel a 44 fős mezőny két fordulójában.

A klasszikus Rubik-kocka kirakás döntője szintén Tsvetkov sikerét hozta. A 74 fős mezőnyben három körön át zajló küzdelemben 6.64-es átlaggal és egy 5.66-os egyéni idővel győzött. A dobogón két hazai versenyző követte: Gergő Zalán Molnár 7.41-es átlaggal szerezte meg az ezüstérmet, míg Gábor Slezák 7.69-es eredménnyel állhatott fel a dobogó harmadik fokára.

Tsvetkov kiváló formája több más kategóriában is megmutatkozott a Budapest Summer 2024 alkalmával.

Az egyéni fejlődések sora a Budapest Summer 2024 további asztalainál is folytatódott. Attila Fazekas három számot teljesített, pályafutása során először mérettette meg magát Pyraminxen egy 10.45-ös kirakással, miközben a 2x2x2 Cube versenyben 21.8 százalékkal jobb időt elérve 3.91-re, 3x3x3-ban pedig 4 százalékos javulással 14.92-re tornázta fel egyéni legjobbját. A legfrissebb versenyzők is letették névjegyüket ezen a megmérettetésen: Előd Dudás itt teljesítette élete első WCA versenyét, rögtön három számban indulva, ahol 3x3x3-ban 31.11-es, 4x4x4-ben 1:58.63-as, 2x2x2-ben pedig 7.87-es idővel mutatkozott be. Ugyancsak a legelső versenyét jegyezte Filip Djordjevski, aki 3x3x3-ban 31.33-as, 2x2x2-ben pedig 7.46-os eredményt állított be két versenyszámában.
