International Showdowns and Domestic Dominance at Budapest Spring 2025English

Seventy-six competitors converged on the Hungarian capital across May 17 and May 18 for Budapest Spring 2025, setting the stage for an intense clash across 12 events and 20 total rounds. Staged at Budapesti Corvinus Egyetem, the cubing competition became an arena of cross-border speedcubing rivalries as Hungary defended its home turf against skilled international challengers from Russia, Germany, Serbia, Slovakia, and Austria. The two-day contest tested solve mechanics across puzzles of every size, delivering high-stakes showdowns from the opening scrambles to the final podium calls.

The marquee Rubik's Cube category featured 74 competitors spanning three hard-fought rounds, ultimately turning into a dramatic international duel. Alexey Tsvetkov of Russia captured the crown with a 5.66 winning average and a best single of 5.19 in the final. Hungarian speed cubing contenders mounted a fierce defense, led by Gergő Zalán Molnár who claimed second place with an average of 6.84 and Dávid Szabó who secured third with 7.70. The 3x3 results proved that while visiting talent seized the top step, the domestic lineup maintained immense depth across the board.

Beyond the standard 3x3x3 Cube, Alexey Tsvetkov continued his dominant run in the short-format and specialty events. Tsvetkov claimed victory in Pyraminx with a 1.90 winning average, highlighted by a rapid 1.26 single across 51 competitors in two rounds. He followed that performance by topping 3x3x3 One-Handed with a 9.83 winning average and a 9.02 best single, outpacing Serbia's Matej Marčok at 12.80 and Hungary's Gergő Zalán Molnár at 15.16. However, Hungary fired back in the 2x2x2 Cube, where András Orbán logged a blistering 1.42 average to win the title ahead of Tsvetkov's 1.61 and Reuven Michaely's 2.29.

In the larger puzzles, Hungary established total control on home soil, spearheaded by Gergely Novotni. Novotni delivered an exceptional multi-category sweep, winning the 4x4x4 Cube with a 27.17 average and a 24.96 single, defeating Tsvetkov who took second in 30.18 and Bence Kiácz in 33.85. Novotni extended his supremacy into the big cubes, winning the 5x5x5 Cube with a 56.78 average over Szabolcs Szántai and Bence Barát, and taking the 6x6x6 Cube in 1:35.19 ahead of Barát and Levente Fejes-Nagyfejeő.

Hungary's momentum carried through the remaining events on the schedule. Bence Barát clinched first place in the 7x7x7 Cube with a 2:47.34 average and took the top spot in 3x3x3 Blindfolded with a winning single of 54.44, edging out Germany's Jan Bentlage at 57.10 and István Kocza at 59.61. In 3x3x3 Fewest Moves, a three-way tie for first emerged as Szabolcs Szántai, Bence Barát, and Jan Bentlage all recorded matching 22-move singles. Szántai also captured the Square-1 title with an 11.01 average, while Bence Kiácz earned the Skewb victory with an average of 3.18.
