Novotni Dominates Big Cubes and Szántai Shines at Budapest Special 2025English

33 competitors gathered on September 21, 2025, for a high-intensity single-day speedcubing clash in Budapest, Hungary. Held at Bornemisza Péter Gimnázium, Budapest Special 2025 featured eight events designed to test mastery across complex disciplines. With no standard main event rounds on the schedule, participants turned their focus to alternative twists, large twisty puzzles, and specialized formats. Across eight tightly contested single-round events, the gathering delivered sharp personal milestones and impressive winning marks in the central European cubing competition circuit.

The story at the top of the table was Gergely Novotni, who captured five gold medals with dominant showings across the large puzzles and side events. In the 4x4x4 Cube, Novotni secured the victory with a 29.35 average, backed by a best single of 27.09. He proved equally untouchable in the 5x5x5 Cube, where his 50.26 average easily led the 27-person field, punctuated by a best single of 46.96. Gábor Slezák took second place in both events with averages of 30.64 and 55.60, while Ádám Szabó earned bronze in 4x4x4 Cube in 30.66 and Bence Barát placed third in 5x5x5 Cube in 57.60.

Novotni extended his command over the heaviest hardware in the 6x6x6 Cube and 7x7x7 Cube events. In 6x6x6 Cube, he topped the 19 competitors with a winning mark of 1:36.57 and a single of 1:31.10, finishing ahead of Barát at 1:44.12 and Szabolcs Szántai at 1:48.56. In 7x7x7 Cube, Novotni completed the big-cube sweep with an average of 2:29.29 and a best single of 2:24.31. Barát took silver with 2:34.62, while Szabó secured bronze with 2:59.54, demonstrating the precision required for solving massive layers under timed pressure.

Beyond the cubic puzzles, Novotni also secured top honors in Megaminx, navigating the dodecahedral challenge to win with an average of 38.60 and a single of 35.45. Slovakia competitor Alexander Pastirčák earned second place with a 48.86 average, while Szántai reached the podium once again in third with 55.07. Across every extended-format discipline, Novotni set the standard for speed and control, anchoring the Hungarian delegation which collected 20 total podium spots throughout the tournament.

Szabolcs Szántai delivered an exceptional performance of his own across multiple puzzle formats, earning two championship titles at Budapest Special 2025. In 3x3x3 One-Handed, where 27 solvers competed, Szántai claimed victory with a 15.29 average and a 12.79 single, outpacing Pastirčák at 16.07 and Benedek Zimányi at 16.54. Szántai also captured gold in Square-1, recording an 11.11 average and an 8.75 single. Pastirčák took second with 13.52, and Bence Kiácz earned third place with a 15.07 average.

In the specialized Clock event, Gergő Czuczor delivered the standout performance of the day. Czuczor won the 23-competitor contest with a 4.96 average and a lightning-fast single of 3.39. Pastirčák collected another silver medal with an average of 6.18, and Szántai added to his medal haul with a bronze finish in 7.37. The Slovakian competitor was the only international podium finisher of the day, securing four podium places against a deep Hungarian lineup in this WCA competition.

Away from the top steps of the podium, several competitors achieved remarkable milestones and personal breakthroughs. Kata Vékony took on three events and delivered a massive leap forward in the 4x4x4 Cube, setting a personal best average of 1:59.44 that was 34.3 percent faster than her prior mark of 3:01.85, alongside logging her first official attempt in the 5x5x5 Cube with a time of 6:54.85. Ádám Simon contested five events, establishing a new Megaminx personal best of 1:13.60 that improved on his previous mark by 18.6 percent, recording a personal best of 1:19.57 in 5x5x5 Cube, taking his first ever attempt in 6x6x6 Cube in 3:22.22, and finishing 7th overall in Megaminx. Lilla Vásárhelyi entered three disciplines, recording a Megaminx personal best of 2:12.81 to improve by 12 percent, while completing her first official attempt at 7x7x7 Cube with a time of 9:40.32 to finish 14th.

The progress continued across the scorecards as Gyula Pap tackled four events, completing his first ever official attempt in 7x7x7 Cube with an 11:38.00 result for 15th place and setting a 3x3x3 One-Handed personal best of 32.82, which was 8.8 percent faster than before. Brigitta Varga competed in two events, establishing her first official attempt at 4x4x4 Cube in 2:43.55 and lowering her Clock personal best to 36.30, an improvement of 5.4 percent that helped her finish 21st. Henrietta Matestyák took on three disciplines, recording her first ever attempts at 4x4x4 Cube in 1:17.93, 5x5x5 Cube in 3:35.78, and Clock in 37.28, which earned her a 20th place finish.

The one-handed event also generated extensive activity across the entire field, with competitors logging baseline and updated single and average marks throughout the bracket. Solvers like Ágoston Török posted a 19.08 single and 21.47 average, Márton Pap recorded a 20.23 single and 24.69 average, and Patrik Andó logged a 22.74 single and 28.19 average. Whether handling classic Rubik's Cube variants or setting personal marks without traditional 3x3 results on the board, competitors embraced the distinct challenges of speed cubing in the Hungarian capital.

With eight events completed in a single action-packed afternoon, Budapest Special 2025 showcased the depth and technical range of the local speedcubing scene. From Novotni five-gold dominance to decisive single-handed solves and major personal leaps on big cubes, the tournament highlighted the diverse talents active in 2025. As participants look ahead to the next stage of the competitive season, this Budapest fixture stands as a memorable showcase of versatility and execution.

Gergely Novotni öt arannyal zárta a budapesti viadaltMagyar

A Bornemisza Péter Gimnázium épületében megrendezett Budapest Special 2025 versenyen a hazai és nemzetközi mezőny harminchárom versenyzője mérte össze tudását a különleges kirakósok kategóriáiban. A 2025. szeptember 21-én lebonyolított egynapos megmérettetés a magyar speedcubing közösség egyik legintenzívebb őszi eseményének bizonyult, ahol a fiatal tehetségek gyors fejlődése és a tapasztalt versenyzők magabiztos formája került a középpontba.

A Budapest, Hungary helyszínen lezajlott WCA competition keretein belül nyolc különböző versenyszámban hirdettek győztest.

Mögötte Alexander Pastirčák végzett a második helyen 16.07-es, míg Benedek Zimányi a harmadik helyen 16.54-es átlaggal.

A fejlődési lendület több más indulónál is megmutatkozott a Budapest Special 2025 fordulóiban. Márk Barassevich hat különböző számot vállalt, a Square-1 kategóriában a tizedik helyen végzett, és 26.95 másodperces új rekordot ért el, ami 8.9 százalékos javulás a korábbi 29.58-hoz képest, míg az 5x5x5-ös kockán 8.2 százalékot javítva 1:47.88-ra csökkentette legjobbját. Dániel Kajin öt kategóriában versenyzett, a Square-1-ben tizennegyedik lett és 7.6 százalékos javulással 32.34-re javított, valamint 5x5x5-ben 1:39.43-as egyéni csúcsot jegyzett. Márton Pap öt számban vett részt, Clockban a kilencedik helyet szerezte meg, Megaminxben pedig 7.1 százalékkal gyorsabb, 2:04.44-es új rekordot állított fel. Róbert Báthory hét kategóriában lépett asztalhoz, Square-1-ben nyolcadik lett, Megaminxben pedig 6.4 százalékos javulással 1:26.21-es egyéni legjobbat ért el.

A Budapest Special 2025 versenynapja összesen húsz magyar és négy szlovák dobogós helyezést hozott a nyolc különböző kategóriában. A tehetségek gyors fejlődése és az elért egyéni csúcsok sokasága egyértelműen bizonyította a hazai mezőny folyamatos felzárkózását a legösszetettebb kirakósok terén is. Az egynapos budapesti viadal a magas szintű koncentráció és az intenzív versenyzés mintapéldájaként zárult, megerősítve a fiatalok stabil helyét a sportág élvonalában a következő idény előtt.
