Chele and Jaehne Excel Under High Stakes at Bucharest Big N Blind Warm Up 2024English
Inside Colegiul Tehnologic Viaceslav Harnaj, the tables were set strictly for endurance and memory. Solvers sat facing oversized layers and blindfolds, steadying their hands before every solve. In big cubes and blindfolded disciplines, standard five-solve buffers disappear in favor of the unforgiving mean-of-3 format. A single missed turn, a slight miscalculation in parity, or an unrecovered memory lapse immediately ruins an entire average, making absolute precision essential from the very first rotation.
The one-day Bucharest Big N Blind Warm Up 2024 took place on August 10, 2024, gathering 22 competitors in Bucuresti, Romania. The schedule featured 6 events spanning across 10 rounds, focusing entirely on larger hardware and blindfolded challenges. Although mainstream speedcubing often focuses on standard 3x3 results and traditional Rubik's Cube rounds, this cubing competition tested mental stamina on a completely different scale.
Ianis Costin Chele captured top honors in two of the major events, demonstrating exceptional control across the larger multi-layered puzzles. In the 5x5x5 Cube, Chele secured victory across two rounds of play, posting a winning average of 55.20 seconds alongside the overall best single of 50.94. Mihnea Andrei Panţu finished runner-up with an average of 59.99, while Damir Zhanataev took third place with 1:08.91.
Chele carried that momentum directly into the 6x6x6 Cube, navigating the punishing mean-of-3 format to win with an average of 1:42.12 and a best single of 1:41.35. Panţu once again claimed second place, logging a 1:51.87 average, while Zhanataev rounded out the podium with 2:26.00. Panţu then reversed the hierarchy in the 7x7x7 Cube, claiming first place with a 2:49.43 average over Chele's 2:53.18, with Radu Andrei Andrieș taking third in 3:36.56.
Beyond the top podium steps, several competitors achieved remarkable milestones across the schedule. Ramy Ștefan Taleb entered 4 events and delivered massive personal bests, cutting his 7x7x7 Cube mark to 6:33.02, which was 23.3 percent faster than his previous best, alongside a 3:25.15 in 6x6x6 Cube that was 18.9 percent faster, and a 1:51.62 in 5x5x5 Cube. George Eugen Drăgan completed his first ever attempt at 5x5x5 Cube with a time of 4:17.44 and achieved a 3x3x3 Blindfolded personal best of 7:56.81, reaching 7th place in the blindfolded event.
The personal breakthroughs continued throughout the field in Bucuresti. Vlad Andrei Bautu took on 5 events, earning a 5th-place finish in 7x7x7 Cube, completing his first ever attempt at 4x4x4 Blindfolded in 15:51.00, and logging a 3x3x3 Blindfolded personal best of 1:58.18, a 19 percent improvement. Victor Anton Stoica entered 3 events and lowered his 5x5x5 Cube personal best to 1:34.73, an improvement of 13.8 percent, while also cutting his 7x7x7 Cube mark to 6:29.35, which was 9.5 percent faster. Petre Emilian logged his first ever attempt at 6x6x6 Cube with 6:05.77 across 2 events entered, while Lucian Mihai Cremeneanu contested 3 events, securing 15th in 5x5x5 Cube and securing personal bests of 6:58.47 in 7x7x7 Cube and 4:03.80 in 6x6x6 Cube.
The blindfolded categories offered their own dramatic moments where single errors proved decisive. In the 3x3x3 Blindfolded event, Konstantin Jaehne took the win with a best single of 33.61 seconds ahead of Andrei Răzvan Ionel's 1:05.53 and Alexandru Ignat's 1:25.89. Jaehne added another gold medal in the 4x4x4 Blindfolded final, winning with a single of 6:03.33 over Ignat, who recorded 7:07.16, and Raluca Ioana Grigoraș, who posted 8:29.24.
The demanding 5x5x5 Blindfolded event saw Andrei Răzvan Ionel take first place with a winning average of 23:48.00 and a best single of 15:14.00. Konstantin Jaehne placed second with a single of 17:52.00, while Raluca Ioana Grigoraș finished third with 18:56.00.
