Cutoffs and Multi-Round Formats Shape Fast Times at Bratislava Spring Is Coming 2024English
Inside the halls of FIIT STU in Bratislava, Slovakia, the competition floor buzzed across February 17 and 18 as 117 solvers gathered for two full days of structured racing. Tables lined with timing pads and display monitors set the stage for Bratislava Spring Is Coming 2024, where a schedule of 23 total rounds across nine distinct events tested endurance and precision under strict World Cube Association regulations. With varied cutoffs and progressive advancement structures in place, each round forced competitors to find consistency early or risk missing out on the later stages of the weekend.
The layered multi-round setup placed heavy emphasis on steady pacing, particularly in the headline classic Rubik's Cube category. Across three rounds featuring 113 entrants, the field narrowed steadily toward a high-caliber final. Alexey Tsvetkov controlled the bracket from start to finish, producing a round-winning 6.53 average and the weekend's best single of 5.75 to capture the title. Alwin Federsel of Austria secured second place with an average of 7.17, while Adam Korinek of the Czech Republic finished third with an 8.73 average in the definitive 3x3 results.
Short-format events demanded immediate speed without the cushion of preliminary test runs. In the 2x2x2 Cube, which also spanned three progressive rounds among 103 contenders, Tsvetkov delivered another victory with a winning mark of 1.37 alongside a 1.08 best single. Federsel followed closely behind with an average of 1.48, and Jan Brtnik took third place with a 1.82 average. Tsvetkov added a third gold medal in Pyraminx, taking first with an average of 2.20 over three rounds, ahead of Matous Keder at 2.84 and Jakub Drobny at 3.57.
In the mid-sized puzzles, two-round formats challenged participants to hit target averages on limited chances. The 4x4x4 Cube saw Thomas Strasser of Austria take the win with a decisive 31.86 average and a best single of 31.24 among 72 entrants, finishing ahead of Tsvetkov at 32.20 and Drobny at 34.54. Meanwhile, Skewb ran across three full rounds, where Vojtech Kundera emerged on top with an average of 3.19 and a single of 2.69, narrowly besting Tsvetkov at 3.32 and Hungary's Bence Kiacz at 3.45.
Beyond the podium battles, the open structure of this WCA competition provided an expansive platform for personal progression and tournament milestones. Markus Janeba tackled four events, setting an official first attempt at Megaminx of 2:29.38 and an inaugural Pyraminx mark of 11.86, while cutting down his 3x3x3 Cube personal best to 16.18, an improvement of 36.8 percent from his prior 25.59 benchmark. Robert Bathory took on eight different disciplines, recording a 32nd-place finish in 4x4x4 Cube, clocking initial career marks of 1:55.77 in Megaminx and 13.57 in Clock, and slicing his Skewb best to 7.52, which improved his old 10.08 mark by 25.4 percent.
The diverse schedule offered plenty of room for solvers expanding their repertoires across new puzzles. Tomas Janak stepped up to eight events, notching first official marks in 5x5x5 Cube with 2:19.35, Megaminx with 1:30.73, and Clock with 14.11. Leonard Kianicka took on seven disciplines, posting debut results of 1:37.22 in 4x4x4 Cube, 6.43 in Skewb, and 3:15.85 in 5x5x5 Cube. Peter Bencik took on six events and logged first-time official single times of 14.36 in Pyraminx, 3.44 in 2x2x2 Cube, and 14.97 in Skewb, while Oliver Sladecek tackled five categories, registering first attempts of 3:41.03 on 4x4x4 Cube, 10.39 on Pyraminx, and 4.94 on 2x2x2 Cube.
The mechanical precision required for specialty events brought dramatic conclusions in two-round brackets. The Clock final featured tight margins throughout, as Matous Keder captured the victory with a 5.83 average and a 4.93 single, edging Alexander Pastircak of Slovakia at 5.87 and Hubert Hanusiak of Poland at 6.11. Slovakia found gold on the big-cube tables through Jakub Drobny, who took first place in 5x5x5 Cube with a 1:02.86 average and a single of 52.66 over Strasser's 1:03.46, and also secured the top spot in Megaminx with an average of 44.02.
Mental discipline proved paramount in the three-round 3x3x3 Blindfolded discipline, an event requiring rigorous memorisation before executing solutions without sight. Martin Frohlich of Austria took the championship honours with a winning single time of 23.14, leading an all-Austrian podium sweep as Simon Praschl placed second in 24.80 and Thomas Strasser followed in 29.55. Across the entire program, Austrian competitors collected nine podium spots, matching the combined presence of five top-three finishes each from the Czech Republic, Slovakia, and Russia.
As the 2024 season progressed, Bratislava Spring Is Coming 2024 highlighted the technical range required across modern speed cubing. From the multi-stage advancement brackets to direct puzzle cutoffs, the gathering in Bratislava delivered a complete exhibition of competitive speedcubing discipline.
