Thomas Strasser Claims Five Titles as Borovany Hosts Cross-Border SpeedcubingEnglish

Sixty competitors crossed borders and regions to gather at KD Borovany on September 2 and 3, turning a late-summer weekend into a bustling test of precision and speed. The journey brought puzzle enthusiasts together in Borovany, Czech Republic, where participants from Austria, Vietnam, Belarus, and across the host nation assembled for 18 rounds of intense action. Covering diverse distances to sit at the solving stations, each attendee brought their own goals to the two-day schedule, transforming the venue into an active hub of international competition.

The journey proved exceptionally worthwhile for Austrian competitor Thomas Strasser, whose tour de force defined Borovany End of Summer 2023. Strasser demonstrated absolute mastery across five distinct disciplines, starting with the premier 3x3x3 Cube contest. Navigating three rounds of head-to-head speedcubing, he sealed top honours with a winning average of 7.64 seconds, anchored by a best single of 5.81. His dominant 3x3 results formed just one part of an extensive weekend haul that saw him collect five gold medals across multiple formats.

Strasser also translated his rapid pace to larger puzzles, taking first place in the 4x4x4 Cube with a 29.98 average after three rounds against 46 entrants. Tomáš Nguyen of Vietnam finished as runner-up in that event with a 32.56 average, while Jindřich Heissiger took third with 34.80. Heissiger had his own moment at the top of the podium in the 5x5x5 Cube, where his 1:00.38 average secured the title. Yet Strasser re-emerged on the blindfolded stage, delivering an astonishing sweep across all three memory-based events.

Solving puzzles without sight demands supreme concentration and exhaustive memorisation, and Strasser delivered under pressure. He captured the 3x3x3 Blindfolded crown with a 31.64 average, leading an Austrian podium sweep ahead of Martin Fröhlich at 50.05 and Simon Praschl at 48.04 single. In the 4x4x4 Blindfolded event, Strasser struck gold again with a winning single of 1:58.74, while Praschl took second with 3:33.92 and Dieter Amberger earned third with 4:28.85. Strasser rounded off his historic run in 5x5x5 Blindfolded, recording a winning 4:41.56 single ahead of Amberger and Jan Fonš.

Beyond the podium contenders, deep personal milestones were forged across the tables as competitors seized the occasion to unlock major breakthroughs. Martin Fádlik travelled to tackle six events, highlighted by a 13th-place finish in Square-1 where he lowered his personal best by 51.6 percent to 28.57 seconds, in addition to making his first career attempt at 3x3x3 Fewest Moves with 55 moves and setting a 2x2x2 personal best of 6.53. Oskar Schöppl made his first official attempt at the 4x4x4 Cube with a 1:25.23, while cutting his 2x2x2 best by 38.8 percent to 4.32 and his 3x3x3 best by 21.1 percent to 15.62. Lucas Höglinger also made immense strides, taking on seven events to earn 14th in Square-1 with a personal best of 29.71, an improvement of 41.8 percent, alongside lifetime marks of 51.43 in 4x4x4 and 1:45.59 in 5x5x5.

Other dedicated solvers marked their own breakthroughs across varied disciplines. Denis Martínek logged his first official 4x4x4 Cube attempt at 1:43.38, while improving his 2x2x2 mark to 3.81 and his 3x3x3 to 17.59. David Kopřiva took on four disciplines, completing his first 5x5x5 Cube solve in 6:02.01 while setting a 2x2x2 best of 4.86 and a 4x4x4 best of 2:39.54. Daniel Dlouhý posted a first 4x4x4 attempt of 2:02.22 alongside personal bests in 2x2x2 with 4.30 and 3x3x3 with 22.03. Vojtěch Pavlík took on six disciplines, recording his first attempts in 3x3x3 Fewest Moves with 56 and Square-1 with 1:05.19, as well as a 2x2x2 best of 3.79. Petr Bunda similarly delivered first attempts in Fewest Moves with 60 and Square-1 with 1:04.06, while dropping his 4x4x4 best by 18.8 percent to 1:41.04.

The 2x2x2 Cube competition generated immense excitement throughout three fast rounds, where Austrian solver Alwin Federsel captured first place with an impressive 1.68 winning average, bolstered by a 0.88 best single. Tomáš Nguyen secured second place with a 2.23 average, followed closely by Martin Kilbergr of the Czech Republic with 2.25. The high-energy event demonstrated the sharp reactions inherent to short-format speed cubing, providing a thrilling spectacle alongside the traditional Rubik's Cube categories.

Strategic solving rounded out the weekend with the untimed 3x3x3 Fewest Moves challenge, where Jan Riedl earned victory with a mean of 30.00 moves, edging Marek Chvojka and Dieter Amberger who shared second place at 31.33. In Square-1, Anonymous claimed the title with a 9.00 average, finishing ahead of Václav Maxa and Belarus representative Yauheni Zviazdou. Austria finished atop the collective medal table with 14 podium positions, followed by 10 for the host Czech Republic, two for Vietnam, and one for Belarus.

Bringing together dozens of travellers across multiple international borders, this memorable WCA competition in 2023 closed out the warm season with exceptional solves and remarkable new milestones for everyone involved.
