Jack Larsson Backsell and Daniel Wallin Rule the Tables at Borlänge Open 2024English

Twenty-nine competitors stepped into the activity hall at Immanuelskolan on March 16 and 17, filling the space with the rhythmic clatter of plastic and the steady beep of timers. Borlänge Open 2024 brought a full roster of 14 events and 23 rounds of action to Borlänge, Sweden, offering a dedicated stage for both seasoned national contenders and developing solvers. The venue provided an intimate, focused environment where every solve across the weekend carried weight, from rapid opening rounds to tense multi-phase finals.

At the center of the action was the classic Rubik's Cube, where Jack Larsson Backsell delivered a dominant performance to claim victory. In the 3x3x3 Cube final, Backsell secured first place with an 8.71 winning average after posting a best single of 7.97 across the three rounds. Tim Staberg followed in second place with an average of 9.42, while Govend Avgerinos Djangoi took third place on the podium with 9.66. The 3x3 results capped a high-caliber weekend of speedcubing that tested raw turning pace and split-second problem solving under match conditions.

Backsell's mastery extended well beyond the standard puzzle throughout the WCA competition. He captured six event titles in total, showing remarkable range across both small and big cubes. In the 2x2x2 Cube, Backsell took top honors with a 2.38 winning average and a 1.79 single. Stepping up to the larger hardware, he secured first place in the 4x4x4 Cube with a 29.97 average, edged out the 5x5x5 Cube title with a 54.41 average, and dominated the biggest stages by winning the 6x6x6 Cube in 1:39.12 and the 7x7x7 Cube in 2:44.07.

Daniel Wallin mounted an equally commanding campaign across specialized events, establishing total control over the blindfolded disciplines. Wallin swept every unassisted memory event on the schedule, taking the 3x3x3 Blindfolded with a 23.73 single, the 4x4x4 Blindfolded in 2:30.91, and the 5x5x5 Blindfolded with a 4:54.75 effort. In the grueling 3x3x3 Multi-Blind, Wallin successfully resolved 31 of 39 cubes within the one-hour limit. Adding to his hardware, Wallin also won the Megaminx with a 41.97 average and captured the Pyraminx title in 3.42 seconds.

The remaining brackets brought further variety to the Immanuelskolan tables. Govend Avgerinos Djangoi earned the top spot in Clock, averaging 5.94 with a sharp 4.36 single. In the 3x3x3 Fewest Moves contest, Helmer Ewert calculated the most efficient solution of the weekend, needing just 25 turns to take first place. Across the entire program, host nation solvers earned 42 podium positions, alongside two podium finishes secured by Erik Tjong Kim Sang of the Netherlands, who took silver in 5x5x5 Blindfolded and bronze in 4x4x4 Blindfolded.

Away from the top of the podium, significant individual milestones defined the competition floor. Sansa Fagerström produced one of the sharpest drops of the weekend, cutting her 2x2x2 Cube personal best by 70.2 percent down to 13.35, while also lowering her Clock mark by 20 percent to 29.03. Noah Gustafsson made massive strides across three events, slicing his 3x3x3 Cube best by 46.9 percent to 21.00, his 2x2x2 best by 33.7 percent to 5.52, and his Pyraminx single by 18.1 percent to 8.94. Love Sohlgren took on eight events, making a first ever attempt at Megaminx in 2:58.20, a debut Clock single of 48.61, and improving his Pyraminx best by 36.2 percent to 7.25.
