Fast Progress and Tight Finishes Define Boards & Cubes Venteira II 2025English

A nail-biting finish in the blindfolded event set the tone for a day defined by fast growth and razor-thin margins, as Owen Orger delivered a 4:02.54 single to capture victory by less than three seconds. The exciting clash at the BoardGame Center Amadora highlighted how rapidly developing talent is shifting the balance across specialty events. Held in Venteira, Amadora, Portugal on July 18, 2025, the compact single-day tournament brought together 11 competitors across three rounds of intense puzzle solving.

The Boards & Cubes Venteira II 2025 offered a specialized program focusing on disciplines outside standard Rubik's Cube solving. Speedcubing enthusiasts gathered to test their skills on non-standard hardware and memory-heavy challenges, packing three distinct events into an efficient schedule. Across three rounds of action, competitors pushed their limits in blind solving, mechanical clocks, and the twelve-sided dodecahedron. Despite the compact field of 11 entrants, the level of determination remained sky high throughout the entire meet.

In the 3x3x3 Blindfolded competition, precision and memory discipline were pushed to the absolute edge. Seven competitors entered the fray, each aiming to inspect, memorize, and solve the cube without sight. Owen Orger of the USA secured the top podium spot with his winning single of 4:02.54. He was pursued relentlessly by Michael Orger of the United Kingdom, who claimed second place with a swift 4:05.20. Maria Alfacinha da Costa earned third place for Portugal with a 4:13.02, while the remaining field dealt with the high-risk nature of blindfolded solving where incomplete attempts lead to DNFs.

The Megaminx contest showcased stamina and pattern recognition across twelve colorful faces. Vasco Vasconcelos took command of the event for Portugal, compiling a tournament-winning average of 1:12.73 alongside the round's fastest single effort of 1:01.89. His consistent execution kept him clear of the six-player field. Maria Alfacinha da Costa produced another strong podium performance to claim the runner-up spot with an average of 1:16.92. Diogo Sarmento rounded out the Portuguese podium sweep, claiming third place with a solid average mark of 1:26.75.

Clock solving brought speed cubing mechanics down to the fractions of a second, demanding rapid dial manipulation and pin switching. Sérgio Leonardo Gaocho earned the top prize for Portugal, dominating the seven-person field with a winning average of 7.90 and a standout single of 6.87. Maria Alfacinha da Costa secured her third podium finish of the day by taking second place with an average of 9.23, which was backed by a 7.09 single. Vasco Vasconcelos added to his Megaminx gold by claiming third place on Clock with a 15.15 average.

Beyond the top steps of the podium, the heart of the cubing competition lived in the personal milestones earned across the tables. Zoe Carey Orger took on her seventeenth career tournament and tackled her first ever attempt at 3x3x3 Blindfolded, locking in a successful 7:06.36 single to finish in fourth place. In the Clock event, Gonçalo Guerreiro, participating in his eleventh career competition, delivered a dramatic improvement by setting a personal best single of 31.01, cutting his previous career mark of 37.31 down by 16.9 percent and securing a fifth-place finish.

The international flavor of this WCA competition stood out in the final medal distribution, with Portuguese solvers capturing seven podium positions while the United States and the United Kingdom claimed one podium place each. The tight battles across all three events showed how quickly competitors are adapting to complex solving formats, turning specialized events into high-intensity races against the clock. Even without traditional 3x3 results on the schedule, the technical standard across Clock, Megaminx, and blindfolded solving remained remarkably sharp.

As the final timers stopped at the BoardGame Center Amadora, Boards & Cubes Venteira II 2025 demonstrated the rapid growth and resilience of its competitors in 2025. Solvers across every level embraced difficult disciplines, walked away with new personal benchmarks, and demonstrated the depth of the local scene in the Amadora region. The tournament closed on a high note of athletic progress, leaving the competitors well prepared for the next season of competitive solving.
